We all watched it, now you get to listen to us react to it.

The Nintendo E3 Media Briefing has come and gone, for better or worse. While you were scouring the rest of the site for all those sweet juicy news bites, the Connectables sat down and talked for a bit about our reaction to Nintendo's big media event.

From Pikmin 3 to LEGO City Undercover to ZombiU, we talk about the announcements that were dropped during the press conference.  What did we think?  You'll have to listen to find out!

And hey, while you're at it you should send us an email telling us what you thought of the show. We'll be doing a listener mail segment in the near future with your thoughts on the big show.

As a follow up to what I mentioned about ZombiU on the episode, I was right about the death mechanic. When you die, you respawn as another person and if you want your gear back you need to hunt down the now-zombified (or if you're lucky, just dead) version of your last character.

Here's why I think we didn't see Retro today:  Their game is for 3DS, and they'll announce it at the Software Showcase.  It certainly would be in line with the idea of them developing a Zelda game for 3DS.

Man, I hope not.  Putting a team as talented as Retro on a 3DS game just seems like wasting their considerable abilities.  And if that were the case, I don't see why Nintendo wouldn't feature that game in the press conference.

One idea I've seen tossed around that I'm liking is to make NSMB 2 a Wario Land game instead.  Given the whole coins thing, it would be more in line with his character.

I just don't understand this line of thinking with the general core gamer. Since when has a handheld game become "less than"? Why does a game becomes superior just because it forces you to be tied down to a big screen TV?


It's like when people complained that RE: Revelations should have been a console game. Porting Revelations to the Wii would not make it more enjoyable in any tangible sense.

I would assume the reason they would not show a Retro 3DS game during the conference was because they planned to save all new 3DS material for the showcase. Scribblenauts aside because that was announced for the Wii-U as well.

Just stop to think for a minute about the two platforms in question: One is a handheld that's (IIRC) not even as powerful as the Wii, and developing on it severely limits what you can do as an artist.  The other is a console vastly more powerful than the Wii, where Retro would pretty much be freed of all restrictions for all practical purposes.  Retro's a developer highly experienced in high-quality, extremely time-intensive AAA console development with major artistic design.  Yeah, I'd really want to waste that talent on a device as weak as the 3DS and a platform that doesn't play to Retro's strengths as a developer.  Plus, after today's Press Conference it's painfully obvious that Nintendo needs more major 1st party Wii U releases, so why use your best studio on a 3DS game?

Besides, if there's one thing I've seen time and time again, it's that handheld developers tend to make the best handheld games.  Console developers tend to make the best console games.  Considering how long it takes Retro to make anything, I want them working on a project where their talents can best be put to use, and they aren't a large enough studio to split their resources working on more than one project at a time.  Retro is wasted as a handheld developer, working on games that other Nintendo developers could easily do themselves.

Find one of your comments kind of funny. I have been wanting to play Batman since it came out, but have not because I only own a Wii for this generation. Not everyone can afford every console that comes out.

So uh, you know how at the end you said "if we're being too negative, tell us"?
Yeah, the tone here was as negative as the days of the 3DS drought, although there was also some anger too.


It was definately a pretty poor conference, but honestly it came across like Nintendo's E3 2012 conference spat in your face and called you a jerk.

Exactly. I know showing trailers for ports of existing games isn't sexy, but we shouldn't assume that no one is excited about them.

You're going to love Batman when you finally play it.  Here's hoping that the franchise keeps going on Wii U.

I have to respectfully disagree with plufim. With the exception of Mike's objectively wrong rantings (call 'em what they are!) on NSMB, you guys were generally spot on. It was a weak conference, poorly presented, and while it would have been merely below average for most years it's a terrible way to launch a new console. You guys were negative, but not to the point of being unreasonable.

Plus, I believe this was done pretty close to the end of the conference proper, correct? Disappointment takes a while to get through.
