Saw this a little while ago, I wish I could say I was more surprised. All her years of drug use probably too its toll on her. Still, it's sad to see someone so young (she was 48) die.

Crack is a helluva drug.

The were just talking about her on the radio yesterday. Said she was out in th eclub with bloody wrist and ankles and hair all messed up. They also said Simon Cowell was trying to get her as a Judge on The X Factor.

But they said that someone had interviewed her just the other day and she said "Crack is a helluva drug, and it's cheap!"

R.I.P. Whitney

If only you had just said NO. (to Bobby Brown and Crack)

For those who believe the adage that death comes in three, it was just earlier this week that Don Cornelius killed himself. So who is next?

oh, it wasn't posted yet when I started the thread. Maybe a mod can do a thread merge.
But mine is more informative and respectful. the other thread would do better as a reply, not an OP.

I think its in poor taste to laugh and make jokes over someone's death. Unless its someone universally reviled like Osama Bin Laden or something.

People would have made these jokes yesterday without others making a fuss about "being respectful". Why does it matter after she died?

Etta James, a far more talented and respectful person than Huston passed away a short while ago. :(

Because she can no longer defend herself, and because death is a tragic thing which should be mourned and not ridiculed.

If we were at her funeral, I might say you have a point, but there's no point about getting your knickers in a knot over a couple of jokes about someone you didn't know, especially on the Internet.

Death isn't tragic. Humans make it tragic. Everything dies, after all. We should all ridicule death. We should laugh in the face of it. To do otherwise is to always live in fear of the inevitable.

You know, after all they've been through, I guess it's only fitting that Whitney Houston actually beat Bobby Brown to death.

I bet you're a fun guy to hang with in real life.

That was complete and utter sarcasm by the way. Stop being cynical for sake of trying to act cool.

That wasn't cynicism. It's a much more optimistic and healthier attitude toward death than most Westerners seem to have. I largely blame superstition for that, though. Never mind the sort of "death cult" status modern celebrities seem to cultivate. The public seems to like nothing more than to watch a star fall.

Now here is some cynicism for you.

Is this thread going to be the Steve Irwin thread all over again?

I actually don't care much that she died. All her good music was 15-20 years ago.

No one is changing their avatars to Whitney so, no, this isn't Steve Irwin all over again.

I feel about the same about this death as I felt about Amy Winehouse' death. That is, they both threw it all away and basically committed suicide. I have no empathy for either of them, and the fact that the media is deifying both of them makes me sick. People are dying overseas. Africans are starving under horrible dictators. Kids are dying of cancer and the insurance companies don't care.

Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston made horrible, horrible decisions on top of yet other horrible, horrible decisions. Good job, ladies (and everyone else on the planet who's a drug addict). Now let's celebrate your so-called lives.

Maybe I'm just incredibly bitter as a CF patient who's doing everything he can to get past his Expiration Date (35) by being extremely healthy, taking tons of medications to keep my from sliding FASTER. These people CHOOSE to destroy their bodies AND they get to play the victim card? Go to hell.

What happened with her? I never paid attention to the mistakes she made, unlike Winehouse.

Addicted to cocaine (even at one point saying she loved it because she felt good using it and it was so cheap), weed, alcohol. Not to mention being in an abusive relationship (mentally, not sure about physically). Rumors that she was doctor shopping at the time of her death. Supposedly she overdosed and drowned in her bathtub.

I don't think they are the ones playing the victim card. They are dead, so its not like they have really any say in what people say or think about them. Its the media that is playing the victim card on their behalf.

Maybe, at least with Houston, they're honoring what she used to be? Kinda like with Micheal Jackson.

For those interested, the coroner for LA just released the cause of death and I am not that surprised:

drowning and the "effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use,"
