This makes Nintendo's loss look like chump change. Unfortunately for Sony it will probably only get worse once the Vita is released and then flops, and then they are forced to cut the price and sell it at a loss.

Curious: Is that the whole company or just the PS3 division? The TV division, for instance, hasn't been profitable in over 5 years. Also, they probably had a big charge from buying Ericsson out of the SonyEricsson partnership.

They invested 6 billion dollars into something, didn't state what other than patents holders for blu-laser tech--which might block nintendo and MS from using any type of blu-laser disc drives.
And then you have the Ericsson deal which was another 1.5 biliion.
Sony's just buying all kinds of sh!T.

Not really... oh wait. The Division that contains PlayStation lost about 85 billion yen (~1.176 billion USD) in ONE QUARTER? For a second there I thought this was for their whole fiscal year. Oh my goodness!

I think both the TVs and PS3s are under the same division? The financial report seems to point to the decline in LCD sales as the bigger factor contributing to the division's loss.

I'm now curious what is the raw number Sony would need to lose before they be liquidated out.

Sony can't block Nintendo when Nintendo is good friends with Panasonic & Sharp who are also patent holders on the blu-laser tech too can they?
Especially when Nintendo will just use of of those patents and tweak it enough to have it re-patented jointly.

Well, their current ratio is less than one, which is bad. Also, they're statement of cash flows is negative, meaning that ratio is gonna go down. Basically it means that Sony pretty much can't pay off all of their immediate debt, in a way. So, maybe not as much as you think.

Sony is part of the group, but I doubt the rest of the members would deny the tech to Nintendo. Especially since Sony could vy to be a supplier for Nintendo
