We all had great childhoods, all thanks to countless hours playing in front of the teevee.

Welcome back to another installment of Staff Sez! The new year is upon us, and what better way to start it off than by looking back at our better gaming years! Leaving aside the forced comedy for a bit, we all have great memories of playing games as kid, but we have even better memories of playing games with our friends and relatives. We cried, we laughed, we cursed when we weren't supposed to and we made friends and enemies alike. Today we look back at our fondest gaming memories and bring with us our favorites.

So without further ado, let's get the memories rolling!

Childhood multiplayer infront of a TV: Combat

Favorite multiplayer in front of a TV: Super Street Fighter IV

Also rans: Mario Golf, Mario Kart, Pokémon (not TV), several Wii FPS's.

Mario Kart 64 and Golden Eye, the 2 greatest Nintendo 64 games of ALL time. I played for hours with my friends on both games. In Golden Eye we played inside the dam about 99% of the time, (and I memorized where all the respawning spots were so I put a proximity mines in those areas and scored up a lot of kills). They'll NEVER be a game like Golden Eye ever again, (many will come close, but they'll never have the same feel as it).

Playing Super Mario Bros. on the NES. I was Mario and my brother was Luigi. I'd get to that awful leap of faith jump in level 8-2 without losing a life. Then my bro would try level 1-1. He would get about half way through it before it was my turn again. Good times.


And is it just me, or does it seem odd that in an article of childhood multiplayer stories, there are two DS titles listed? Anyone? Ok... I guess I'm just old...

I played Jump Ultimate Stars the most during 8th grade and my freshmen year of high school, so I'd count that as a childhood memory.

The DS has been around a while at this point. People who were in 8th grade when the DS launched are now juniors in college.

Childhood, to me, isn't really late middle school. To me, it's more elementary school, which is why I went with GoldenEye memories (4th grade or so) instead of Melee/Super Monkey Ball memories (8th grade/freshman year of high school).

Not that James is wrong for listing Jump Ultimate Stars, but we just differ on the viewpoint of what constitutes childhood video game playing.

Going by Neal's definition, my entry would switch to "Tecmo Bowl for NES in my best friend's basement."

I guess I should clarify my thought. I got the original DS at launch back in Oct 2004, so yes, I do realize it has been out for some time, but what struck me as odd was the fact that NWR has staffers young enough to consider DS games part of their childhood. I've been a regular visitor here since 2001, while I was in high school. Back then, all the staffers were older than me. It hadn't occurred to me that the age paradigm could shift so dramatically. In short: my bad. I let surprise get the better of me.

Childhood Multiplayer: Playing Tecmo Super NBA Basketball (around 10 or 11 years old), Battletoads co-op (had to have been 7 years old), and WWF Monday Night RAW (SNES - so again...age 11 probably).

Favorite Multiplayer: Definitely the N64 era as I can't really pick a fav -- Bomberman 64, Killer Instinct Gold (oh, man..this game is incredible), Mario Kart 64, GoldenEye (of course), Diddy Kong Racing, and of course multi from my fav game ever - Jet Force Gemini. I can't get enough.

Wow. Typing all that out made me recall all of those memories. I miss the good ol' days. :')

Totally fine.

For the first few years of my time on staff, I was the youngest at like 20/21. Than, Karl came back and ruined it for me. So, I hired a bunch of other younger dudes to make him not the youngest.

Conclusion: This is all Karl's fault.

All Karl's fault, huh? Well, I do love escaping blame... alright then, all in favor of blaming Karl for my shortsightedness and ignoring that Neal purposely hired young people, please make manifest by raising your right hand and saying, "Aye."


But seriously, just do it in front of your monitor--not in the forum. 1) It will be funny to see how people react to your apparently unmotivated voting. 2) We don't want to spam this fine article's forum... even if it is funny and would vindicate myself.


On a note of relevance to this article, another multiplayer memory would have to be playing the original Mario Kart for the SNES. Whether my bro and I were lapping the computer racers in the Grand Prix or blasting each other in battle, it was always fun. I'm a green shell sniper.
