Title: Geist: Coolest game style ever!
Post by: The King of red Lions on May 13, 2003, 02:08:52 PM
Just from the info i've read and the few screenshots I've seen(I expect more in the next couple of days), this game has got the coolest premise i've ever heard of. You are a ghost, searching for your long lost body. You take over other peoples/animals bodies to steal their physical and mental powers. Oh, yea, did I mention it is a first person game? I'm not sure if it is and adventure(fpa) or a shooter(fps) I hope n-space(the people makin it) will create a nice fps. That would be sweet.
Sony, take note, This is called innovation.

it looks like like a good fps with some good innovations i like the ghost story and how you can go into the bodies of enemies hopefully it will build on that concept - and the game is multiplayer too i cant wait to see more of this game

They're a startup from Florida, if you'd read the articles.. oh well.
I think thay've been playing too much Avenging Spirit (if that's possible). Of course, that was a platformer, this is the first time I've heard of a posession-FPS, so I guess that's innovation. Don't get me wrong, I really am looking foward to this game (unlike most FPSs).

I'm just surprised it's actually an FPS.... out of Nintendo! O_O This is the first since PD and the first non-Rare Nintendo FPS. It sounds awesome- I hope it'll live up to that.

This game looks a lot like ESPionage and that one isn't very impressive looking to me either.

This game is actualy the title "Fear" that was mentioned lately. This according to IGN. I wonder what happened to "Ground Zero" that was mentioned in the same article as "Fear"?

Its probably Game Zero....speaking of which no news on it thus far. I'm betting it will be shown behind doors once e3 officially starts. Geist is very intriguing. I can't wait to see how possessing different characters affects the gameplay. I see that its at least 4 player from screen shots....any word on LAN play?

It's not Game Zero genius. Game Zero is by Zoonami...
Anyway, Geist has crap graphics as of now...and the interface doesn't look too hot. Oh well, Nintendo's publishing it, and they won't publish crap. They'll probably just delay it until it's good, like 1080...

I remember when Metroid Prime's interface used to look odd. And I do think 1080's improved as well, at least, NST finally figured out how to take direct screen shots instead of the blurry video capture method.

Um... is it just me or does Geist look...... crap? Seriously whats so amazing about it? Because its made by Nintendo? gimme a break...

Yeah that's what I was thinking. But Metroid Prime looked like crap in the first in-game shots.

I don't get you people. WHY do you think it's crap...?
Geist looks comparable to Time Splitters2, Nightfire, even Prime in some cases, all of which look great. Maybe you're just tired of shooting nameless military security personnel holed up in underground research facilities.

Um, are you sure you are looking at the right screenshots? The art is bland. The poly counts are extremely low. The shadowing and lighting are very simple. The geometry is primitive. And worst of all, it's not seamless. The textures on the walls don't perfectly blend into the textures on the ground. There's not bump mapping. This wouldn't matter if the textures were good, but they are not. They are plain, and low res.
And just so you know, Timesplitters 2 and Nightfire didn't have that great graphics...They were above average.
Prime on the other hand...is years beyond this game. Perhaps you need to play it again. Just look at the opening space station level...The transperancies, super detailed character models, advanced lighting and environment mapping, and perfect cohesion and seamlessness in the graphics, not to mention a great art style, all make Prime far better than Geist in terms of graphics.

Actually its not just the graphics that i dont like, i mean graphics arent everything. I just think the whole concept sounds lame. Can someone tell me whats so amazing about it?
Title: RE: Geist: Coolest game style ever!

Well it would be pretty cool to switch between soldiers, dogs, and hot momas on the fly. For example...You gotta get into a compound. The problem is, it has an eye scanner. So you gotta make your way over to another part of the level, break into a building, and possess a sergeant or something...

Yeah, the screenshots weren't that great, but I'm under the impression that this game is still way early in development. Nintendo probably would've held off on it under normal circumstances, but it is important for them to show that they are trying to get the games the older gamers want.
The game play does sound great, though. They didn't go into detail about the whole body changing thing, but this game could be pushed over the top if gamers are allowed a lot of freedom in changing bodies instead of having to follow a highly scripted scenario.

As far as development time, the game has been in development for less than half a year... 6 months ago it was planned as a multiplatform title called Fear and disappeared, apparently cancelled. Then Nintendo came in...So I'm guessing it's only had about 4 or so months of good development time.

Sorry guys, but the concept isn't new. A PC game called Mesia was released a couple of years ago, where you played a "cherub" and could posses people to make them do things. This is just a twist on that game.

Or, if you want to go back WAY old school, there was a game called Paradroid on the Commodore 64 that let you transfer from robot to robot ("possessing" them).
This game is amazing. I still play it to this day.

looks fine to me..it looks like half life..but slighty better..then again Half-Life is really old..but I will tell you.... you people must not have seen games made by most companies other then Nintendo. Seriously it looks alot better then many things.

Being a ghost that posses things is a much better concept than Halo or Half-life, and the graphics probably aren't as good as they'll be come completion. I may not buy this game, but it certainly looks like it will be good, anyway.

I am so excited about this game and the concept and for the people dissing the graphics the graphics look fine to me and besides its still too early in development so just give it time.

This games graphics are above average, but not fantastic.
However, keep in mind that at the same stage in Prime's development, it looked far, far worse.
If Nintendo pumps as much juice into this as they could (and they SHOULD: a hardcore FPS that totally rocked is what really draws in the American market), it could be just as good as Prime or better. I say better because I don't care for First Person "Adventure".

I'm not too sure this game will do very well. The plot sounds neat but I guess we will have to wait and see. It does sound very interesting to me and I'm definetly checking it out.

Geist sounds better then Half-Life or Halo? WTF? H-L still stands as my favorite single player FPS, HL2 might change that though.... And Halo is probably the best console FPS there is (at least top 3).
I don't know much about Geist, but I dont have the {{guts}} to say it sounds better then two of the best FPS games ever.

If this was made by some company I'd heard of, or even a new Nintendo second party that's never made a game before, I'd give it a chance for the graphics to get better as development progresses. But n-Space is a crappy company. They cuck, and unless Nintendo helps them out A LOT, I don't see how the graphics in this rip off game (it rips off of many games, including rip offs! ) could get to such standards set by other Nintendo games.

An employee of N-Space made some comments on the IGN boards. He said that the demo build at E3 is real old. They are much farther along, that they have a ways to go, that they are making huge breakthroughs, and he is imrpessed with their progress each week. His name there is Bolt007 if anyone is interested.

It does not matter who thought of the idea first, what really matters is who implements it best. All you gain from conceiving it are bragging rights which is nothing to boast about if you are unable to realize the idea's full potential in the first place. Messiah (remembered hearing hype about this one but it suddenly disappeared off the radar and I assumed it had flopped) and that other game I heard mentioned obviously did not accomplish such and disappeared into obscurity. Therefore thats all in the past and should stay there. Those games had their chance and failed miserably. Now its time for Geist to carry the baton. With Nintendo taking N-space under their wing there is no doubt the potential of this concept will be realized. And If I were some of you I would watch what I blurt out about N-space being an inferior developer. If i'm not mistaken people thought just as highly of Retro not to long ago and of course they all ate their words. And Gamefreak, was not Retro just another inexperienced startup developer no one had heard of prior to being given the Metriod license by Nintendo? Oh I can still recall all the negative opinions people had when they learned the sacred Metriod license was being warped into a FPS hybrid by an obscure, novice developer conceived by Nintendo. As for the graphics do the words still in development get through those thick skulls of yours? What makes you assume the visuals cannot or will not be improved with time. Jeez, start thinking in the long term for once.

highenergyboy - Yes I know, but Retro doesn't count since Nintendo pretty much molded Retro Studios to their current state. When Nintendo bought Retro, they fired practically everyone except the top people and put new employees in.
n-Space on the other hand, already has their own reputation and company. They've made games before and they weren't good. That's all I'm saying. I'm not saying this one won't be good, on the contrary, I highly doubt either NOA or NCL would dare publish a bad game. Just look at 1080, they just keep delaying it until NST gets it right.
I guess it depends on how much Nintendo helps them...if Miyamoto is involved, which he probably is since all he does lately is hang out with second parties telling them what to do, then it should turn out fine.

The demo was very limited, and the graphics were still a bit rough. That said, the game played very well, the controls were quite good, and the entire experience felt fresh and new. I'm very much looking forward to this one.

Wow so there are more FPS coming to GCN? Metroid Prime & Sequel (exclusive) XIII (cel-shaded multiplatform) Zoonami FPS (exclusive) Geist (exclusive and possibly Nintendo will give guidance to some further ideas that can be incorporated)
Im sure Im missing many more GCN FPS like the Medal of Honor and Bond franchises but hey, so many gamers out there will still be complaining about the GCN's lack-of lineup.
Its amazing how shortsighted many fanboys are.
Is Geist a full-on FPS? I understand that it is in First Person mode but so was Myst the PC game, or is Geist primarily an Adventure game in FP mode?
Also in reference to possession themes, Wind Waker has the Song of Possession in it also

In my opinion, the game looks solid and you younger gamers need to understand that graphics do not make a game and that gameplay does. We get an exclusive game like Geist and people are still crying and moaning, put a sock in it already! Some of you call yourselves fanboys it seems more like crybabies to me. I think the Nintendo lineup looks great so far and a lot of you do not give Nintendo enough credit.

while I agree doc, that we should be happy about an exclusive, theres still no reason why graphics cant be good GCN quality, and im sure they will ultimately match that standard, theres still plenty of time and this is an early build.
