Title: more aggressive price drops that Nintendo could make NOW
Post by: sweetfeathery on September 08, 2011, 08:41:24 PM
With low stock numbers, Nintendo has the perfect opportunity to quickly boost its sales on old content. Here are a few of my ideas:
Dragon Quest IX- drop from 34.99 to 19.99
Reprint top selling DS games at appealing prices! Games such as Zelda, Kirby, Super Princess Peach, older Mario Puzzle/sport games should be placed in a DS Best Sellers Catalog anywhere from 14.99-19.99. I find it crazy that some of these titles I have seen sold preowned from vendors such as GameStop for more that 34.99 due to supply and demand.
System drops: Drop DS Lites to 69.99, DSIs to 79.99, DSI XL systems to 99.99
Expand Nintendo Selects including Third Party games. Games that I find would be great fits are -Just Dance 1 and 2 -Epic Mickey -Super Smash Bros Brawl -New Super Mario Bros -Wii Sport Resort -Monster Hunter Tri -Excite Truck -Excite Bots -Mario Sports Mix -Super Mario Galaxy 2 -Wipe Out -Call of Duty -Donkey Kong Returns -Kirby's Epic Yarn -Pokemon Battle Revolution -Goldeneye 007 -House of the Dead 2 and 3 -House of the Dead Overkill
Anyways, just a few things that Nintendo could do to gain some quick hardware/software sales for this holiday season. Let me know what you think!

Even more aggressive price cutting right now would just make Nintendo look even more desperate than they already do.

Nintendo should NOT drop the prices on any of the DS's. You want people migrating to the 3DS.
A lost of those games you listed are either to new or have already been priced dropped.

I would like it if some of Nintendo's older DS games that are out of print became available again, they should extend the Nintendo Selects line to the DS. Games like Mario and Luigi Partners in Time and Mario Hoops may not have sold very well, but the DS userbase is a lot larger now so there's a much bigger audience to sell those games to.

That was one of my very first DS games ever. It was fun, but it is EXTREMELY short.

I spent about 23 hours with it, so I didn't find it extremely short, myself. That's maybe an hour or so less than what I spent with the first game, so it's about on par with that. Maybe it's short compared to RPGs, but it also has a lot less grinding and other stuff that extends the length of such games. Still, it's a good one for the $15 price point I think the DS Nintendo Selects should have if it gets created.

That's weird because I remember the original one for the GBA being much longer, and the more recent Bowser's inside story seemed longer too. Maybe you spent more time hunting stuff down than I did... I dunno, but I breezed through it in a short time and since it came out so early in the DS' life I kinda felt like it was rushed to completion or something. It was still a great game though, don't get me wrong, but it just seemed like it was all over way too fast.

I would love to have DKCR, Mario Sports Mix and Goldeneye 007 on the Nintendo selects, but they are too new for that happen.

I have to respectfully disagree with you Ceric. If Nintendo wanted people to migrate over to the 3ds then why did Pokemon Black and White release on the DS? Now that Nintendo is moving over to the 3DS why not take full advantage of all the units they have out in retail store shelves to consumers such as parents? I use to work at GameStop and I had parents come in who would buy their kids bargain priced games so that they would have something to grow into. The parents would tell me that their kids were too young to have a 200 dollar handheld but figured that they could find something from a previous generation for far less that the kids would enjoy just as much. They would buy a GBA SP for 40 bucks and 5 dollar bargain preowned games. Dropping the price of the old DS further would be a great opportunity for the consumer who has a 5 year and wants to play a handheld system or for someone out there who wants to play Pokemon Black or White but couldn't justify a 150 dollar purchase... lets take that model! 100.00 you get a DSi with either Pokemon Black or Pokemon White. All Nintendo would have to do is either reship DSIs and package them with the game or have a auto promotion with every DSI sold. It would push hardware out the door for Nintendo and still turn a profit.

Because it was done six months before the 3DS and Nintendo likes money.

Or because the 3DS had an audience of 0 and the DS had an audience of 150million+.

And because it made development costs lower.

Or because the 3DS had an audience of 0 and the DS had an audience of 150million+.
But it takes baby steps like that in order for the 3DS to one day get to that point itself. If the DS keeps hogging all the releases then consumers will have little incentive to upgrade.

But you don't drop a system mover like Pokemon on a system that is not only not out yet, but doesn't have the hardware supply at launch to satisfy it nor does it have the install base to support it several months afterwards.
3DS needs to form it's baby steps on things like attractive price point and solid software presence. Pokemon is a big leap and 3DS wasn't ready for it 6 months ago, let alone 4-6 months before that when the game actually released. To be honest, unless sales continue to increase and stay there, I'm not sure 3DS would really be ready for Pokemon at all this year.

Pokemon would sell units. I don't think the system has to be "ready" for it. Sure, some people would worry about the brand being hurt by low sales, but Pokemon sells. That's just a fact about this earth that we all live with. It could move units too.

Even if Pokemon's sales were low, we all know Nintendo's A+ titles never drop off the sales charts. The legs this game would have would be enormous, and it would continue to sell like crazy years down the road. The only thing that would stop it is the release of the next Pokemon game, but that doesn't have to be any time soon.

Pokemon would be a steady income source but, a system mover. Not at this point. It is a checkbox now. People expect it.

Would be nice is if Nintendo offered discounted DS games on the 3DS eShop. I would love to buy DQ9 on the eShop for $19.99. The same goes for Aliens Infestation and all the other great titles for the DS. Wouldn't this also allow DS games to bypass the resolution debacle currently found on the 3DS?

If Nintendo did that, they'd start with Pac N Roll and not a cash cow like DQIX.

We all know how Nintendo loves to make money, so it would make sense for them to start selling DS games on the eShop.

Saying that Nintendo dose not want to sell their old DS hardware is absurd. If Nintendo only wanted people to buy the 3DS then why have a new Kirby game on the market? Why have a new color for the Metallic Rose? No company that sells electronics is going to be able to convince everyone to stay current with the market. If that were true, then you would debate that there would be no need to drop prices of other electronics such as DVD players, DVD movies, LCD televisions... I can keep going on but I think Ive made the point .

No one is arguing that they don't want to sell there old hardware but, the DS doesn't need any help moving units still at its current price. No reason to drop it and further the gap between the 3DS and the DS price-wise. If Nintendo got to magically be the tie breaker between someone buying a DSi and a 3DS they would choose the 3DS even though it probably nets them less income in the short term.

Pokemon moves systems before it released. It moves tons of units at launch and the following weeks. Nintendo needs to have that install base already there on Day1 for a big release like pokemon, and that install base isn't there yet. But if they just announce that it's coming and when, then lots of pokefans will run out and buy the system now instead of waiting till later since they know for sure it's coming.
It's hard to sell 13 million copies of Pokemon Grey to an audience of 5 million. 3DS isn't ready yet.

Yeah, but they don't like losing money in order to make money. You start selling DS games on the eshop, and people will stop buying the GB, GBC, all other previous generation's games. And aren't DS games kinda big, file size-wise?
You know, with Partners in Time, it took me about 23 hours too, but it FELT really long. The combat was a bit repetitive, and with the final boss? Both princess shroobs took me forever, and then you watching the Star Wars-esque end sequence, thinking the game's over, and then Wham-O! One more boss! (I won't say who).

The vast majority of DS games are under 128 MB. Somewhat big compared to the 2 GB SD card that ships with the system, but doable if they so desired.

That be around 15 DS games. I'm not sure what the average collection size is but a lot of people probably fit below that.
As Kytim pointed out, the SD card is easily upgradeable. The kind of people who would want to buy that many DS games would probably be fine with buying a bigger SD card, if they don't already have one. I personally already have an 8 GB card in mine.

Buying those SD cards will also be much cheaper than the equivalent for PSVita
a 32GB class 10 SD card only cost $50 You could hold alot of games on that. As a matter of fact, you probably wouldn't need another card for anything 3DS related for the life of the system, unless you were trying to save everything released all at once like some sort of crazed collector.

So UncleBob's screwed, but everyone else would be fine with 32 GB.
