Sony has officially cut the price on the PlayStation 3 in all major markets, the company announced in Germany on Tuesday. The 160GB system will now be $250 in the United States, 250 euros in the European territories, and 24,980 yen in Japan. The price drop is effective immediately in all territories except Japan, where the price drop will begin on August 18. The PlayStation 3 model with more storage is also seeing its price cut, with the 320GB system now being sold for $300 in the US, 300 euros in European territories, and 29,980 yen. "In addition, a limited edition inFAMOUS 2 bundle is now available at participating retailers across North America. The bundle retails for $299 and includes a 320 GB PlayStation 3, a copy of inFAMOUS 2 and a 30-day membership to PlayStation Plus," SCEA's CEO Jack Tretton wrote on the official blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/08/16/live-from-gamescom-playstation-3-now-249/).
Now the PS3 finally costs what the Wii cost when it first launched. I wonder if Microsoft will consider dropping their prices too

I don't think Microsoft needs to, the Xbox 360 software library is vastly superior to the PlayStation 3s. Plus, you can get a Xbox 360 Arcade for $200 anyways.

I don't see how it's "vastly superior".  IMO, the 360 has the edge on downloadable games (though that's evaporating over time), and PS3 the overwhelming edge on exclusive titles.  In the end, the two are about equal, especially since both platforms tend to get the same 3rd party games.

That said, the 360 has sold a lot of hardware lately, and its software consistently outsells their PS3 counterparts.  I don't think Microsoft's too worried about the PS3 only dropping $50.  At that price, you either already own a PS3 or you've been waiting for a much lower price tag (probably $199).

I don't see any PS3 exclusive games that are all that good (except for maybe a couple of first party ones). And I would never pick the PS3 version of a game that is also on Xbox 360.

I would and did. PS3 was the lead platform on a few of titles like Final Fantasy XIII and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. If anyone is the least bit interested in those titles and has a choice over which platform to buy it on, PS3 is the way to go. Not that either 360 version sucks, but they run better on PS3.

Xbox may not have many exclusives versus the PS3, but I've noticed Xbox Live tends to get DLC and stuff a month or more earlier than the PS3 does. The downside of that is that you have to pay for Xbox Live, but I guess it would be the better option for people who must have DLC right away and don't want to wait awhile.

The Uncharted games alone are better than every exclusive available on Xbox.

I'll play the Uncharted games one day.  I played the Demo and it didn't grab me but, that's been years ago.

LOL, no.The Uncharted games aren't bad, but I had more fun with games like Crackdown and Dead Rising.

You pay $200 for the 4GB Xbox, then buy a third-party hard drive for it for $40. Still cheaper than the PS3. :P

Plus, you can use up to 16GB SD cards in the Xbox 360 as well.

Getting there. Once I can find one for $40, I'll get one.

So...basically you're thinking of getting one in 2020?

I get PS3s for $40 all the time.

The MSRP of the PS3 will never be $40. It may get down to $100 sometime after the PS4 is out, though.

I think at one point the PlayStation was $50 MSRP, but I think that is the exception. Other consoles have sold for that low, but usually because the retailer charged that much rather than it being the MSRP.

Hell the PS2 still retails for $99.99.

Which is about $50 more than it should be right now.

I remember the Atari Jaguar was dropped to $50 near the end of its life, not long before Atari went bankrupt. Even the $50 price couldn't save it. I wish I had gotten one then because it seemed like a neat albeit obscure system, but I was just a kid or young teen at the time so I couldn't afford it and by the time I could it was too late.

Uncharted 2 is probably the best single player game out on any system so far. Hell, it's easily one of the most well-made games ever made.

Even better than Super Mario 64 or Zelda OoT?

I took it to mean this generation. Still, Uncharted 2 gives those games a run for their money. It's one of the few games released last decade that really impressed me. I'd probably give Ocarina of Time the edge if only because games today continue to adhere to the example it set.
