Title: Should I get (x) or (y)?
Post by: Oblivion on July 26, 2011, 12:38:02 PM
The purpose of this thread is to help those out who can't choose which game to buy. Especially if you have limited greenbacks, like me.

Should I preorder Star Fox 64 3D or Bit.Trip Complete? I own SF64 on the VC and I own all 6 Bit.Trip games already. I do want both games, but I only have $75 for game purchases.

Save your money for a game you don't already have. Just my suggestion.

I'm already buying Dark Souls, Uncharted 3, and the Ico Collection. I'm getting all the "new" games I want.

Bit.Trip Collection.  The complete collection has a lot of new contend from what I read.  Which makes my question to the 3DS version or the new Complete Collection.  I hate that their making me make this choice because I want to play those games portable and I haven't actually played any of them yet waiting for the 3DS collection but, if I really like them I don't won't to have to double dip for the extra's in the Wii version.

I suggest getting Complete. Play the games the way they were intended on one disc. Yes, you can get it portable, but it won't have the same controls originally designed by the developers. I don't think 3D and portability is worth the purchase.

Star Fox 64 is one of my all-time favorite games, so I'd say go with that. I, on the other hand, will be buying both, because I buy too many 3DS games (9 and counting).

You should buy a super soaker instead and fill it with booze.

I drink scotch, though, and a Super Soaker doesn't seem like it would work well with that.

A minor quibble, but you should probably fix your topic title.  It should be "Should I get (x) or (y)?" (and maybe remove the parentheses altogether).  As it is, your topic asks to pick between two of the same item, mathematically speaking.

I  merely used the two x's as fillers for whatever to fill in. But alright.

Well then, to answer your question I would probably suggest you buy the Bit.Trip collection.  Star Fox 64 is a great game, but Nintendo's not adding anything new and substantial to these N64 ports.  With some added slowdown and less appealing graphics, you can just play your Virtual Console version again.  The Bit.Trip collection looks to actually have new content, so that would get my pick between those two.

Insano: Well I was talking to the youngin' who started the thread, but I can retort to your disposition as well.

Every scotch drinker likes to hold a nice sniffer. Undoubtedly it reeks of sophistication, wisdom and class. However, nothing can rival the sheer awesomeness of putting something as reveled as scotch in something as silly as a supersoaker.

Should I get the Vita? I want to budget my money correctly so that I can get Vita and a Wii U on their launch dates. I have about $160 (and no, I don't have a job).

That being said, I'm more intertered in the hardware of the Vita than the software. I'm interested in Golden Abyss and perhaps Dragon's Crown, but is the built-in software and hardware enough to warrant it's price tag at this point? Or should I just save my money for the Wii U?

Honestly, I'd wait to make a decision until we know more about both systems, particularly the launch lineups.  I've made no secret that I'm spectacularly underwhelmed by the Wii U.  IMO, if you already own a PS3 or 360, you don't need to own a Wii U based on what we know so far.  If you don't already own a PS3 or 360, you will be able to buy one with a couple of decent games with the money you could spend on a Wii U.  Nintendo just hasn't announced anything worthy of interest about the console yet outside of a controller I find pretty unnecessary and gimmicky.

Then there's the Vita, Sony's handheld Hail Mary.  We don't know what the launch lineup will be, the pricing model for games, or if it'll be better supported than the PSP was.  I'm impressed by the Tech, and I'll be getting one somewhere down the line to replace my PSP.  But for all we know, the handheld will flop like the 3DS has and the thing will get a significant price drop soon after launch (also like the 3DS has).  I also want to know other pertinent information such as battery life and how well it plays PSP games (as well as if there will ever be even a 3rd party solution to the UMD problem).

There's plenty of time until both systems release, so save your money and keep an eye on information as it comes in.  If you like what you see of the Vita, pick one up.  Ditto for the Wii U.  There's just not enough information out there to recommend either platform, IMO.

They heavily implied that Pikmin 3 will be either at or near the Wii U launch, therefore I will be buying a Wii U at launch. As for Vita, I'm buying it for backward compatibility as much as its original lineup, so I'll probably just grab it at launch as well.

Wait, have they said the Vita can even play old PSP games?
Thanks for the advice you too. I'm probably gonna wait then. But now my "25% trade credit increase towards pre-orders" coupon is now wasted.

They've confirmed that any PSP games downloaded off the PSN will be playable on the Vita, but so far all UMD games are useless since the Vita can't play them.  Maybe a 3rd party somewhere down the line will release an accessory to do just that, but right now if you were a loyal PSP user you're pretty screwed.  That's why the only UMD games I have are Birth By Sleep and Valkyrie Profile, games you can't currently buy off the PSN.

Meh, it's not that much of a big deal. I recently sold my PSP and all my games anyway. Though I would like to get Type-0.

Buy a head of lettuce and some Purina cat chow.

Then buy that Resident Evil 3DS game.

-I would  with Starfox, the games are about equal basically in content but Starfox probably will hold its resale value better (if your into that kind of thing).

-On the vita topic,  I would wait 6months  or so after launch, the handheld market (in america at least) seems volatile and gaming handhelds seem to be struggling to find a niche in the iPhone saturated market. However Vita does seem to be a safe purchase if you dig Japanese games; its region free, and the Japanese market and dev support seems to be handheld focused.

My X or Y:

Just purchasedt a new Ps2 slim to play some jrpgs that i missed.... should i get Final Fantasy X or FInal Fantasy XII......my apprehensions about XII stem from some descriptions I heard of the battle system.

I'm a bit biased (Final Fantasy X was my first video I ever played) but get FFX. IMO, it has the superior story and battle system. There are points in both games that get boring, but at least with FFX, it's worth it in the end. Don't let any "classic" FF fan tell you different.

Do it backwards.  Get FFX-2.  The whole Dress Sphere thing is pretty amusing.

Don't do that...assuming that since you want a FF title, she/he cares about the story. Wouldn't she/he want to know what had happened beforehand?

No.
Dress Spheres.

Edit:
I mean I don't even think its actually relevant to the games story except how the gang got together.

Ah, finally an easy question with an easy answer: get Final Fantasy X  It has its problems (many of which were covered extensively by Spoony), but it's still quite possibly my favorite game in the franchise.  It sports great music, easily one of the best Final Fantasy stories, and an interesting character-growth system in the Sphere Grid.  It also managed to inexplicably make turn-based combat interesting to me again (along with Personas 3 and 4), and I am not usually a fan of turn-based combat.  As silly as the world is when you get down to it, it also sports incredible art design (this game still looks pretty good) and is remarkably consistent with everything at some point or another based on circular concepts.  Sure, Blitzball sucks and makes no sense, but at least you can ignore it outside a couple of story beats.

Then you have Final Fantasy XII, one of the most disappointing games I've ever played.  Throughout the game, it tries to be big and epic with a focus on backroom political machinations...which turn out inevitably to go absolutely nowhere.  There are at least two characters (the two characters presented as the main characters at the start of the game, mind you) who are completely superfluous to the game, and the rest of the characters fare no better.  The only worthwhile character, really, is the Han Solo-esque Balthier but even he can't save a game this boring.  The combat system is incredibly dull and reminds me of an MMO, as do the rest of the quests in this game.  The art direction is fairly bland as well, especially compared to FF X.

Ideally, at some point Square-Enix will finally get off its ass and release an HD collection with X; X-2; and XII, but until then stick to playing X.

And by the way, if you end up liking X don't play X-2.  IMO, X-2 is a very weak game that rips the heart out of X to fashion a narrative that is nowhere near as interesting.

X-2 is fluff but it is funny watch Pop-Stars Hit things with Mics. They attack if you berserk them.

Meh. I thought FFX-2 was a little too...campy. Know what I mean? I did love the battle system, however. Second only to perhaps the Paradigm System from XIII.

Paradigm System is cool but, I never got to far because the battles started becoming frustrating swapping.

IMO, that swapping is what gave me the excitement. Same excitement that I got from dresspheres.

Conceptually I  like it but, the implementation some of the fights I feel like I'm playing pong.
