Title: Team Fortess 2 now FREE
Post by: SixthAngel on June 26, 2011, 07:09:03 AM
Valve is now giving away Team Fortess 2 minus a few hat related things.

I loved Team Fortess so I'm in the process of installing Steam now despite the fact that I don't think my computer will be able to run TF2.  It has taken me about an hour to download, update steam, create an account and then update steam again.  You think they could make their store a bit easier to freaking download, I haven't even started on the game yet

edit:  After preparing my download for another 15 minutes it gives me an "all download servers are busy" notice.  I thought Steam was supposed to be some hot **** pc gaming service and yet I can't even download a game from it?

If the news just got out that TF2 is free I could see that causing all its file servers to be busy.  I never had that message before.

The servers are probably swamped as everyone in the world attempts to download the game. Really, it's one of the few games worth putting up with Steam for. It's a great title, and still worth full retail price. I got it a looong time ago in The Orange Box, which was a deal in itself. I kind of lost interest once they introduced the crafting stuff though. Maybe I'll pick it back up now that they're is going to be such a huge player base again.

Or maybe I'll just find the old mod files and install it back into GL Quake or Quakeworld... I'm sure there are still servers up for that. :)

Thanks for the heads-up!  They must have resolved the server issues; I was able to download my copy very quickly.

Its sort of amazing how muscle memory works.  Its been 9 years since I regularly played this way and the first thing in the training I had to tweak up the mouse sensitivity and move the reload to mouse.  Also started using the shovel alot...

I was wondering if it had that.  Where is it?  I didn't see it or I probably put that on as well.

I've had this for a long time thanks to the Orange Box, but I've never played it.  Kind of feel like a chump now.

I guess this explains the TF2 beta I've had available in my Steam library.

I downloaded it because it was free, but haven't played it yet. This would probably be a good time, with a lot of new players in there I'd probably have an easier time.

I now have the entire Orange Box, having paid about $5 total, between getting this and Portal for free and the rest on sale for practically nothing

I don't think I've paid for anything based on HL2 except Portal 2 and that includes HL2.

Finally downloaded.  It took a week and a half to not get a "servers are busy notice" and then about another week and a half to download it at the slow download speeds the steam servers had at all but certain times of the day.  I'm happy that my computer can run it fine though.  I did the training and had some slowdown but it turned out it was because my computer was also controlling 15 bots on the same screen, multiplayer is silky smooth.

The game itself is pretty great.  There are some excellent additions over the original like ubercharging that add some more strategy to the game.
My go to guys right now are the Heavy and the medic.  I love walking beside the cart or charging the enemy whether I'm the one shooting or the one doing the healing.  I really like the spy but for some reason it seems like every time I try to stab someone in the back they immediately turn making me stab them in the side.

I do think that hats and weapons have gone too far.  I'm playing and there are these demomen with freaking ninja swords that basically make them an entirely new class based on melee attacks.  Its hard to prepare to fight these guys when I don't really know what they are capable of because I can't do it myself.  Some of the guns and stuff are okay, they offer some very slight changes but ones like the sword seem ridiculous.  I played a pyro for one game and another pyro just kept murdering me, even when he was already wounded.  After about my fifth death it pops up on my screen that he has some kind of flamethrower that absolutely kicks my ass.

If anybody wants to play a game or trade (apparently I can't initiate) my steam id is spinningcats.  I'll probably lag up US or euro servers but I wouldn't mind trying to play with some people here sometime.

I grabbed the freebie a couple of weeks ago.  I am having quite a bit of fun with it.

My favourite class is probably the medic.  2nd is the pyro.  I am absolutely terrible with the engineer.  I don't know how people use him successfully.  I think it is a genetic impossibility to use him.

My steam ID is ShortyM.  Feel free to add me.

No, unless you have the XBox one or something. You already have this if you have PC Orange Box.

I do own the Xbox 360 version. I liked the game, but am not a fan of games that are online only. I would have loved it if there was an option to play offline with bots.

I believe there are bots and lesson modes and stuff now, but I've never played them. There's a mountain of content that's come out since the initial release that's not in the XBox version, not to mention balancing and bugfixes. I played the XBox one once and people were shooting through opening gates and stuff, it was awful

Yeah, there is an offline mode with bots.  No missions or anything, just the multiplayer game but with bots instead of people.

You know I haven't been able to find a live game everytime I try.  The Server list just never loads after letting it sit for a while.

Must be with the PC version. I remember playing the Xbox 360 version and the only option was to play online.

Steam won't let me add friends until I buy a game.
I'm sure I'll get one eventually but I don't like being pushed into it by gimping the free game I've been given.

There are quite a few douchebags online.  I joined a few servers the other day that had a mod which gave everyone with a free acount [free] next to there name.
I'm sure this is done to intimidate/bring people down but the funny part was that the top guys on both team had free accounts.

You don't have to purchase a game. You could just get something from the ManCo store. Of course, you'd be better off with an inexpensive game than some micro-transaction crap. :)

That's why I'll get a game when they have the right one for the right price.  I'm never going to buy any MannCo. stuff.  I honestly don't know why Valve hasn't given away more free games before.  The thing that holds people back is that they don't actually have the steam store.  Giving away a game or two gives people your store irregardless of stupid hat microtransactions that they seem to be gunning for.

Is there anything I can do with locked boxes?  I'm not going to buy a key but can I craft them or anything?

You should have picked something up last week during the Summer Sale. You could have had Killing Floor or Left 4 Dead 2 for $5 a piece. :P

I don't have a answer for the boxes. I've admittedly been out of the loop on Team Fortress for a while. The new blood is tempting me back in though. Now my friends have little excuse not to form a team with me.

I like that they release updated weapons and stuff but the updates are ridiculous.  The current update is something like 3 1/2 gigs.  That's almost an entire freaking game and it only seems to be bugfixes.  Not only are some of them huge but I get smaller updates every other day, its pretty annoying.

I really like Team Fortess but Steam continues to be horrible.

I go to buy my first game over the weekend, Vampire the Masquerade:Bloodlines on sale for $5 bucks, and Steam won't go through with the sale and confirm my credit card.  This is the same major credit card that was accepted for Minecraft and I was able to use to renew my drivers license online last week.  Steam can't confirm it for apparently no reason at all and keeps telling me to try again in a few minutes.  Shitty updates and stuff is okay but when Steam can't function as a store, which is the entire point of the damn thing, it is pathetic.  I opted out of contacting customer service because the last time I did it took them over a week to respond with something that was too late to help.  This is unacceptable from a videogame store.  As far as I'm concerned there should be someone I can call but if email is the only way to do it the mail should be back the same day.  With the deal officially over I will now probably not try to buy anything from the store for a long, long time and certainly won't be getting anything I was on the fence about.
That means no friends list in TF2 for a long time :-[

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is hands down one of the best RPGs ever made! The dialogue and voice acting is still leagues beyond a lot of games today. Sadly, the game had a rocky development cycle thanks to the woefully underdeveloped Source engine. This shows through in a few places, such as clunky combat scenarios and the entire last act of the plot. If you're a fan of the property (I've been playing the P&P game for over a decade!) then you should check out VtM: Redemption as well. I know it's available on Good Old Games at least.

As for your specific troubles. I've never had any issues like that. There are still plenty of reasons to hate Steam DRM though.

*shrug* I can't say I can hate Steam DRM because I just download Steam Login and my new computer is ready for my games.

They would have been ready quicker if you had just popped in the disc though. Steam is ridiculously slow to download most of the time, and downright pathetic if you have more than one thing going on with it.

True.  I wish they get rid of the download cap or whatever is throttling.  I have a 24mb/sec (Normally get about 21mb/sec) Why am I downloading at 100-300kb/sec

If you ever get around to purchasing it, make sure you download and install the Unofficial Patch. Thanks to the brilliant community surrounding the game, it has seen several fan patches to fix additional bugs, re-enabled cut features, and even add some new stuff. There are other great mods as well, but they come down to interest and taste, whereas the Unofficial Patch is essential.

There's some pretty cool items for TF2 right now. They come with various Bethesda and iD games, which are all on sale during QuakeCon.

The Quake1 rocket launcher is particularly appealing...

Quake 1 invented the rocket jump, right?
Title: Re: Team Fortess 2 now FREE

Yep, and is still the most infamous rocket launcher to ever grace a game. It's visual style, speed and splash damage still makes it the weapon of choice in QuakeWorld.

Of course, it's even more fitting seeing as Team Fortress started out as a Quake1 mod. :)

Quake IV.

If you haven't played it before, it might be worth the $20. It's definitely the weakest game in the Quake series. There are some good mods out there that try to further emphasize the squad based gameplay. The co-op mods work particularly well. The multiplayer runs almost exactly like the coveted Quake III Arena once you throw a few tweaks at it. :)

Yeah, I played through Quake IV back when it was new, so I'm not gonna drop 20 bucks on it unless I suddenly become rich.

They may have suckered me into actually buying something from the Mann Co. store.  I didn't realize free players have an item limit of 50 and I reached the limit the other day and now have been deleting all my duplicates.  Since some of the items change the gameplay a lot I may pick up something.  I see guys playing with the Dead Ringer and I really want it, but I would rather buy something cheap and unlock it later.

Does anyone know what the absolute cheapest thing is?  Looking online it seems to be keys.  Assuming the shop works for me is it really true that I need to put 5 dollars in my "wallet" instead of just buying something?  That seems like stupid xboxlive points stuff and I don't really expect it on the PC.
Title: Re: Team Fortess 2 now FREE
Post by: S-U-P-E-R on August 07, 2011, 09:51:41 PM
I think the cheapest item is 50 cents. If you buy keys, I'll give you a couple crates to open if you don't have any, because I have a mountain of them
Title: Re: Team Fortess 2 now FREE
Post by: SixthAngel on August 07, 2011, 10:21:53 PM
Since I have to plunk down 5 bucks already I'll probably go for a key and take you up on that offer.  I had some crates but I deleted them all because they were just wasting my limited item slots.  Can crates be any item or are they limited to specific ones?  Its frankly pretty ingenious of them to have several roadblocks you hit while playing the game to see which one brings you to buy something.  I'd be upset but this game is well worth the pittance I'll put down.

Can I buy games with stuff in the wallet or just Mann Co. crap?  I would really like my leftover money go to a future purchase instead of hats and keys.

On the game itself.  Who at Valve thinks that "no random crits" is a big negative?  They can save your ass sometimes but a weapon that you know is going to critical hit somebody or do something else every time is so much better since you can plan your attack around it.  For example, I can't see myself ever using the regular shotgun for the engineer when sentry kills give you critical hits with the other one.

This is very interesting. They are giving the game away but hoping to make money on in-game item purchases. I don't really like micro transactions.
Title: Re: Team Fortess 2 now FREE

There are really quite a lot of titles going that route. Most are MMOs though.

I guarantee that Valve has made more than a respectable profit off of Team Fortress 2. Giving it away at this point is more to to promote Steam anything. Same with Alien Swarm. As is, I haven't noticed anything in the MannCo store that can't be acquired simply by playing.
Title: Re: Team Fortess 2 now FREE
Post by: SixthAngel on August 09, 2011, 01:19:42 AM
I don't really like micro transactions.
I hate them too.  Everything is available to you without buying with a few caveats.
Items are given out randomly and given for gettting certain achievments to pay and non-paying people.  That might mean that the item you really want might take some time to get but you can get it for free.
The free version is limited to only 50 items.  Now this is a lot of items but there are many more in the game.  You can delete some if you want to get others.
Free members can't initiate trades to get new items.
Hats don't seem to randomly drop but they don't effect gameplay at all.
With any purchase no matter how small you get bumped to the paid version so it costs as little as 50 cents.  Whenever Valve can sort out their problems with me paying I'll do it once and get bumped up.
Title: Re: Team Fortess 2 now FREE
Post by: SixthAngel on August 11, 2011, 09:57:31 PM
They fixed my problem sort of.  I can now buy things from the store but only from a specific version of the Steam website.  I can't even use the Steam client to buy things making it just a bloated piece of drm/ad machine.  They sent me an email saying they fixed the problem with a link that said "use this to complete your purchase."  I thought that it would lead me to a place where I could finish buying the sale item from the weekend. Nope. Just a new link to the store, what I wanted to get no longer exists.

Can I take you up that offer for an item box SUPER?  Steam ID spinningcats

I kinda want a cool soldier hat and the Quake rocket launcher if someone wants to trade theirs for some other hats or something!
