Title: GC demo disc for sale this month
Post by: Berto2K on May 07, 2003, 01:57:56 PM
After reading around I heard that Nintendo is going to sell the next demo disc. After some looking I found it on the ebgames.com site. It will sell for $9.99 right after E3. I hope that they have them in the stores too, would rather not pay shipping on it.

Linkage: Demo Disc

Depends what they got, but I probably will, too.  Thing is, then I'll see how awesome the games are and I'll have to buy them.  And I don't have enough money for all of the games!

Yeah, I am hoping to have them in stores too.

I am not too concerned about having to pay for them.  It's standard practice in the industry to pay for demo discs.  You do it whenever you buy OXM, OPM, or any PC magazine.

Wouldn't that be great to have it free for Nintendo Power subscribers.

On another note, wouldn't it be better for stores to simply distribute these?

Well it's not really much of a surprise for it to be for sale.  I don't expect them to give this sort of thing away for free.  $10 is pretty steep though considering in Canada it will cost like $15 and you can typically buy a magazine and a demo disc together for cheaper than that.  Maybe Nintendo could make a deal with retailers so that if you buy a Cube game you get the disc free.  That seems like a fair situation to me.

Heh, I thought the reason they put prices like $10 on this sort of thing is so that they can act like they're doing you a big favor when they give it to you for less (or throw it in for free with something)...

Ian Sane: the deal is that you get the disc free when you buy a Gamecube, hence, an extra incentive to buy a cube. The rest of us, who already own cubes, presumably need less incentive to buy Gamecube games.

I'm sure Nintendo would go the way of other mainstream gaming magazines and include it for all of it's subscribers.  I doubt they would distribute it bundled with the magazine in retail stores -- do you ever notice how so many shrink-wrapped magazines are mysteriously opened on the mag shelves, with the demo CD nowhere to be found??

If they keep their demo CDs free for subscribers and $10 separate, I believe they might attract more subscribers.

Not really. I pay something like $30 each for OXM & PC Gamer and considering cover price, 12 FULL ISSUES and 12 full demo disks....... the demo disks are like pennies on the dollar. Not $9.99 or even $7.99 for one demo disk. Plus OXM has downloadable content from DOA3 new outfits to Splinter Cell Kola Cell. It should be included in the subscription price. Demos are promotional anyway.

But don't you see, if Nintendo charges 9.99 people will still buy like crazy. That's why a coke from a vending machine in a movie theater is 3 bucks. Or why a little bar of chocolate is over 2 bucks. Because people will pay, they will give in to their impulse..

I don't think thats the case. This stuff does cost money and with magazine sales I think the price is factored in on some level. Then you have stuff like Sony Jam Pack that cost about 5 or 6 bucks. I agree that the 10 bucks is steep when compared to the Sony stuff, but paying for demos is not entirely unusal or cruel.

A long time ago in the days of the PSX, I heard a rumor that you could send in a form (or go to a website) and select 4 games that you would like to try out, then Sony would make the custom demo.  I heard these things were going to be $10, but it never happened. . . or never actually was planned to happen.  I always thought it'd be a great idea.  I, for one, would do it.  It'd almost be like renting it, but only the first level of four different games. . . and yours to keep.

But yea, $9.99 is definately steep if it's going to be those that you play in the stores.  If not, it's still a little pricey but that would hopefully end after a while and they would lower it to like $6.99 or something.
