more info before the year is over (=2012 release?)

Nintendo Power: Do you see any advantages to making Dragon Quest on a home console again?

Yuji Horii: The next Dragon Quest game, Dragon Quest X, will actually be released on Wii. I feel that some users will want to play Dragon Quest on the big screen, which is why we are working toward releasing it on Wii. Of course, in the future we might develop on handhelds again, so it's really a case-by-case basis. It all depends on what the customer wants at that time. Something else we hear is that players want a new Dragon Quest that follows the same system of Dragon Quest VIII, so that's something else we're taking into consideration while in development for a Dragon Quest on Wii.

Nintendo Power: Is development on Dragon Quest X proceeding smoothly?

Yuji Horii: All we can say is that development is going well and we're on the last parts of the game. We can't really share much else at this point, but by the end of this year we should be able to announce something regarding it.

I just have no desire to play a game like Dragon Quest on anything other than a handheld.

We still don't know who's developing it, do we? Level 5 developed the VIII and IX.

WHAT?  Dragon Quest fans don't want the series to change, and Square-Enix is more than happy to oblige them?  Get out of town!   ::)

I'm glad to see that such a major game is still coming to Wii, though I can't bring myself to care about this game as someone who played through and finished DQ VIII and thought it was nothing special.

Sigh, not sure what to make out of this other than it's rough time of year to believe anything.  Hense April's Fools Day.  Recall all those Earth Bound ones a few years back.  Fans ripped into them all excited just to be disappointed at the end.

This is from Nintendo Power ymeegod. I don't think they would do this type of April Fools joke.

Actually it's a quote from Nintendo Power?  Did anyone actual read it from the mag or just from the net?  Earth Bound was the same, was plastered on the web as being a direct source from an upcoming Nintendo Power article which we only found out a month later didn't exist. Not that I fall for that sort of thing :(.

I don't have a subscription to NP anymore so I can't comment. I'll go out some time tomorrow and look for a copy of the newest Nintendo Power to confirm. If someone  has a NP subscription that can confirm  let us know if this is factual.

I haven't played a Dragon Quest game since it was Dragon Warrior on the NES, so I might get this if it comes here. If it has an online mode then I'll definitely get it to play with my friend, but I highly doubt it will.

Yeah, I truly hate this day. I'm always weary of everything. But this is a pretty insignificant comment that they might announce something regarding the game by the end of the year, doesn't even say it'll be a release date. So if it is someone making it up then it's pretty lame.

So is this going to end up like Dragon Quest VII which came out of the PS1 after the PS2 had already launched?  Of course DQ VII was one of the bestselling games ever in Japan so maybe Square Enix isn't concerned about that.

Still sucks for Nintendo though.  They needed something to prop the Wii up for a bit longer but this isn't going to come out until after the Wii no longer needs propping up.  I doubt they expected this kind of timeframe when they made the original announcement.

It could double as a launch title for Cafe (exclusive content & upscaling), so maybe it'll be worth more late.

This is a game that I would be very surprised to see Nintendo NOT try to upscale for their next system. It's exactly the type of game you'd want to launch with. Even a BC Bundle or something.
Title: Re: Dragon Quest X still coming to Wii....
Post by: Mop it up on April 30, 2011, 06:08:06 PM
Eh, Dragon Quest isn't about the visuals. It's been a late release on its system of choice as of recent, so the same logic of holding it off could have applied to them as well. Since it can likely still be played on the new system there isn't much reason to spend development resources on overhauling the game.

This x10! I bet Nintendo is pleading with SE to do this. This title, in Japan alone, will guarantee that Cafe would be sold out, with a major 3rd party game at the front of sales.

Square Enix announced a final release date and price for Wii's Dragon Quest Collection today. The compilation will arrive on September 15, priced ¥4,440.

Dragon Quest Collection is a compilation of the first three Dragon Quest games. The disc actually includes five games, the first three DQ games in their original Famicom form, and and the Super Famiciom Dragon Quest I&II and Dragon Quest III remakes.

Perhaps bigger news than the release date is one of the bonus goodies: a bonus video clip for Dragon Quest X! The DQX video will be included on the main game disc.

Falls down.  You haven't even seen screenshots yet and now they are going give us a whole video now :0.  Part of me wants it, part of me says not to get my hopes up.

Wonder what odds are people placing on it coming stateside?

Doesn't Nintendo publish Dragon Quest games in North America now? If so, the odds are pretty high.

Reggie: Sure, we'll be publishing another compilation of NES and SNES games.
Everyone: W-What about Xenoblade?

Everyone: O......kay.... what about The Last Story?

Does this come from Japan? Yes.
Do People Want it? Yes.
Is it already Localized? Yes.
Has NCL say I have to Publish it? No.

Not coming to North America.

If the Operatiin Rainfall stuff were going to have an effect (which I'm still almost certain it won't), this would be how it would happen. NOA's not going to change its mind, but if we attract enough attention that NCL comes up to bat for us, something might happen.

Which means we are sending are letters to the wrong branch.  They should be flooding Iwata's desk. Or Severally annoy all of the board members till they give like I originally suggested.

The Dragon Quest compilation won't come to North America (or Europe likely) because they would have to localize the SNES versions of the games. Considering that such a compilation would be a niche product here, I doubt they would consider it worth the trouble.

If the collection does come to North America, it is going to contain only the NES versions of I, II, and III, and be offered as a pre-order bonus for Dragon Quest X.

They should just put Dragon Warrior 1-4 on the VC. Or better yet, Dragon Warrior 1+2 for GBC on the 3DS VC.

I'm all for that. Throw in DQ III for the GBC, as well. IIRC, that saw a GBC re-release, too. It'd be a fair, non-cheap non-cash-in way to celebrate the anniversary.

Square-Enix really should have gone with Sony. There are more then enough PS3s out there in Japan and the rest of the world that it still would have been a massive hit in Japan. Even if the numbers weren't there initially (for the system at the beginning) they had to think they would have improved and Sony wouldn't do what they could to get them up over the long term.

Nintendo has done nothing to foster RPGs on the Wii in preparation for this game. The ones they do have they sat on for a long time (after they released in Japan) and when they do put them out they ignore their largest market. The Nintendo/SE partnership is questionable anyway I feel. SE uses the DS as a dumping ground for remakes to make some cash after sinking tons of money into their HD games and PSP games. Nintendo just laps it up while they keep pushing an IP, that they don't own, that clearly isn't embraced by the west and likely never will be. The whole DQ push I feel has been a utter waste of time and money.

Square Enix always puts the Dragon Quest games on the best selling system, and that is easily the Wii. Dragon Quest IX (on the DS) is the best selling game in the series outside of Japan and is the best selling game in the series overall, it became the first in the series to sell over 1 million in North America (which is good for any game). The Dragon Quest remakes have gotten great reviews and sold extremely well (same with the Final Fantasy re-makes. I fail to see how you think it has been a wast of time or money when the series has become even more successful since Nintendo starting publishing it. You may not like the games, but the facts show you are wrong on it.

There don't need to be popular RPGs on a system before Dragon Quest is released. People will buy a system for it, at least in Japan.

And if they release a special Dragon Quest themed Wii, they could probably convince a lot of existing Wii owners in Japan to buy the system again too.

a couple of quick updates from the event.  Big news though :) .  Game seems to be a mix of 8 and 9.  It looks like 8 but much bigger and plays like 9 where the characters are fully customizable and of your creation.  The game is online but could also be played solo.  Now for the the bigee.....A version is being developed for the WiiU and it'll be compatible online with the Wii version.  Game is looking sweet as hell so far.  I'm excited :) !!!!!!!  Be back later with pics and a trailer if NWR hasn't already jumped on it by then lol.

EDIT:  Some further info, Iwata just comfirmed that you can start with the Wii version then pick up with the WiiU version when that comes out.  Sweet.... If Squareenix can make the WiiU version look like the cell shaded cg videos in the trailer, then this will be one hell of a game.
Here's a link to a english blog over at Adriasang that did a live cover of the conference.

I was afraid of this too but from what I read, the game could be played completely solo with ai partners just like in 9.  To me, this looks like they took the huge world of 8 and added the features of 9.  I think that is the perfect combo.

From the gameplay videos they showed during the conference, the world looks massive.  At times, some of the locations seem to put Xenoblade to shame with how vast they seem.  This could be why some of the graphics are taking a hit.

I got to find this damn trailer though, the cell shaded cg was really nice and I would hope thats what they would aim for on WiiU.

Sorry for the double post but I found the trailer plus 2 gameplay videos.  Here's the link.

Alright, here's some quick info on whats in the videos.  The first one is the trailer.  The second one just shows what I believe to be meeting up with others in town and then heading out and battling a couple of enemies.  The third video is really interesting becuase it shows what I believe to be you making your own clothing in the game and also furnishing your  own house.  Also, the closing segment of the third video shows off some gameplay videos that really showcase the graphics in the game along with the size and draw distance to the areas.  The game looks great in my eyes and I really hope they can do much more than just uping the resolution for the WiiU version.

Also, if you scroll down on the page, there is a roundup of all the info gathered from the event.  There is a lot of interesting things mentioned such as the Wii needing usb storage of which I am unsure about.  You'll also be able to create your own weapons and you'll gain fame if a lot of gamers use your weapon.  Your character can also join up with others online even when your not playing.  I wonder if this earns you experience points. There is so much listed that its difficult to talk about it all.

That's complete and utter BS. I said that because of Nintendo's own actions have proven to me they won't do what is necessary to make this a success outside of Japan. I said that due to how they've treated and continued to treat their own RPGs that they themselves have developed. I could have sworn I went further in my post and explained why I felt that way. Yet if you just read the first sentence I can see how one could have missed it.

A bit worried about the "social" elements they are adding (like I give a poop about custimize housing) but at least it's still 100% turn-based.  9 wasn't to bad but it lacked the charming characters and story found in 8.

Now it's just wait until the release date?

Bull. Nintendo promoted the hell of of DQ IX, and it worked since it became the best selling game in the series outside of Japan.

Agreed. This is the best of both worlds because the Wii U starts off with a killer title and at the same time this title will come to the Wii where it is sorely needed and long expected.

Personally I always pick human in mmorpgs because I don't like the designs of the other races you typically see.

In DQX, I prefer to be Human because that's what I relate to the most out of the other races. Also, I like being the hero.

I'll still use a female ogre, wedi, and the Elf looking race as Ai party members for Soloing.

Some shots look better than others, but I still they look far below what the Wii is capable of. Maybe slighter better than DS, but I think they could have done so much more (like Xenoblade).

Hopefully the Wii U version looks more like the CG shots.

After watching it in motion in HD, it didn't look too bad, more like a GC game, but I am definitely holding off for a Wii U version which should easily be able to pull off the perfect cartoon look of the CG.

The thing is about making the game that pretty for Wii U, they would have to re-do all of the assets and basically make the Wii U version the definitive version even though it has yet to prove itself on the market place.

Would it be bad judgement to go all in and make the Wii U version amazing? Probably not, but it mostly depends on how much extra money is needed. Still, in general terms it is very risky.

This would be a perfect moment for Nintendo to *wink wink nudge nudge* a little capital their way to alleviate some of the risk.

I would figure that the decision was made a while back for this to come to Wii U so the assets themselves where made accordingly.  For all we know those could be the Wii U assets being used for the cutscenes.

Though by its very nature of coming out later the WiiU version would need to be the definitive version.  With the Wii's saturation it's pretty safe to assume that anyone who wants this game will have this game.  A port that doesn't take advantage of the unique features and extra horsepower would be a waste.  This being DQ isn't enough to buy a different platform version of a game you already own.  Not to mention they probably have at least 6 months to be working on the game and can keep in mind the WiiU version when they are making different assets.

It would also give everyone (in Japan) a HUGE incentive to buy a WiiU @ launch and double dip on the game.

If Nintendo and SE are smart, they wouldn't mention the WiiU version again until after the Wii version is out. Market the Wii version heavily, achieve that 4 million is sales, then during a commercial right after the Wii U launch, show nothing but gameplay that looks like the CG in the trailer and at the end of the commercial say, "Now available for Wii U".

I agree with you. Nintendo and SE should make the most of having a huge RPG ready at launch. That still doesn't make it any less risky though.

I don't see what's so bad about the screens, Dragon Quest has always had a simplistic art style and this game looks way better than any of them.

The environments, they're just empty looking. I don't think there's a great leap over DQVIII, a game that had the same problem. Give me Metroid Prime-detailed environments anyday.

Quote
- The game's story will have lots of volume, with the hope that players can continue to play online for a long time.
- Outside of story, you'll find a lot of gameplay content, as each of the game's five races have their own specific quests.
- While it's common for online games to not have an "ending" with a "last boss," it appears that this will not apply to DQX.
- The game's inn facility will now have a concierge. The concierge will give you info about events.
- While the game will have auto save, you'll still be able to go to the church to pray in order to save.
- The game will have a post office through which you can send letters and items to friends without directly meeting.
- The game world will be many times bigger than Dragon Quest VIII's massive world.
- Your player character is actually human, but after some sort of happening, he turns into one of the five announced races.
- You start the game off in a small village, where you live with either your brother or sister. The game's character making feature allows you to create this family member as well.

It's starting to grow on me, but Wii should be able to produce better results than what SE is currently showing off in these screenshots.

As reported at Famitsu.com, producer Yosuke Saito and director Jin Fujizawa said that the game will be updated with additional jobs following release. Currently, the game is scheduled to launch with the six previously announced jobs. However, in the future, we could see additional jobs, including jobs that one would not expect of the DQ series.

Asked about the differences between the Wii and Wii U versions, Saito said, "The Wii version is totally fun! The Wii U version is totally fun! And it's also extremely beautiful." He added that if you have two systems, you and a friend can play together.

I really hope the Wii U version looks as good if not better than the CG portion of the Wii version.

Also I would like to know if the Wii & Wii U version can play together. I don't see why the wouldn't, and maybe it's already been addressed, but if you know, can you answer?

Does DQ have "Lady of the Night" or "Burger Flipper"?

Looks good enough, I still was expecting it to look better on the WiiU but I guess it was too much to ask.  All I have to say though is that given the graphics, the world better damn well be MASSIVE and have no loading as I travel.  Thats the only excuse I would take for them to be putting out graphics like this on the WiiU.

The graphics are what they are because the online play is compatible with the Wii version, so they couldn't change it too much.

I hope Nintendo doesn't take two years to release this game in the states, I am really looking forward to play this game.
