Title: Nintendo Donates to Earthquake Relief
Post by: the_dan_x on March 14, 2011, 08:42:34 AM

Nintendo extends a helping hand to earthquake victims.

In the midst of disaster, Nintendo has announced that they will donate 300 million yen ($3.6M US) toward relief efforts for the massive earthquake that rocked Japan last Friday. The disaster has also triggered other game publishers, including Namco Bandai, 5PB and Sony to make donations and to take part in campaigns to assist the victims. The catastrophe, which caused a tsunami and damaged a nuclear power station, is estimated to have claimed more than ten thousand lives.

I haven't heard that any Nintendo factories were affected by the disaster, but Japanese ports and supply lines have been disrupted, and that has to affect them like it will every Japanese manufacturer. Not saying that their donation is completely selfish, but it does raise an issue for them with the launch of the 3DS.

The 3DS systems are not manufactured in Japan, they are made in China. So I don't think this would have any effect on distribution of the system (except maybe in Japan).

Good for Nintendo, a lot of aid has been promised so far for relief. Over 80 countries have pledged help, and a lot of companies are also donating. Zynga is letting people donate money by buying special items in their Facebook games, Apple is letting people donate to Red Cross Japan through iTunes, etc.

Good job Nintendo, I knew they'd do something to help out. Things like this make me happy that I am loyal to them.

yeah, this kinda sucks, this is the second time a catastrophe has interfered with Nintendo's sales in Japan. If the Tsunami hadn't hit people would only be talking about 3DS in Japan. When Gamecube came out in the Japan it was lSeptember 14th 2001....I doubt much coverage was given to that launch.

You can also text "JAPAN" to 20222 to donate $10 to Save the Children for Japan, "4japan" to 20222 for $10 to World Vision, "japan" or "quake" to 80888 for $10 to the Salvation Army, "Mercy" to 25383 for Mercy Corps, "Tsunami" to 50555 for Convoy of Hope, "med" to 80888 for the International Medical Corps. Those are some more organizations that are accepting text donations for help in Japan.

Yes, if you are able, please donate. With lots of people donating just a little bit, it could seriously go quite a long way.

On Nintendo's Japanese website, I think the only thing that they have really said would be effected would be people who had sent in consoles for repair. Something like that.

That is a good point. Fortunately though, a system's success or failure isn't entirely determined by its launch. I'm pretty sure shipments are going to be sold out regardless. Nevertheless it was very bad luck for the 3DS to have launched at this time, but there's no way Nintendo or anyone could have foreseen this.

Hi! I'm from Brasil! The taxes here are HUGE!
Most people here buy pirated games, but I prefer to buy just original stuff... I don't got a lot of money, but I enjoy helping the game developers.
I just bouth the Red Wii (Mario's 25th birthday Edition) and the original Donkey Kong Country Returns and I'm really excited about it! If the brasilian govenment lowered the game taxes everybody here would buy only original stuff...  :-\
