Title: Mafia XLVIII: DC Universe. Dead Thread. Series Cancelled.
Post by: Khushrenada on February 22, 2011, 12:31:49 AM
or "Just wait. In a year or two, I'll be back." You see, because characters that are killed in comics often don't stay dead long. You don't get it? Oh.
This is where the dead players come to whine and plead to be brought back in the game and complain about the poor sportsmanship of others.
If you give away info or are still trying to influence the game while dead, the hosts will take the appropriate actions needed to resolve the situation. Also, you'll hurt your chances for a prize.
With that, feel free to post.

Because he can just upload his consciousness into another computer. And I'm sure he has back-up files of himself as well. Easy question. Here's a tougher one. Why hasn't anyone killed the Joker yet? It doesn't have to be Batman. It could be another criminal. It could be a fed-up regular joe. Why has no one been able to touch him?

If you go by Return of the Joker - the Joker just uploaded his consciousness into another person. ;)

Who would want to be known for murdering a clown? Not any self-respecting villain I can think of.

Deal with it. Night actions just hit their deadline. There's no way we're going to have the actual thread up that quickly. It takes time to handle everything.

That's true. It reminds me of a story once. Hitler and Himmler were having lunch and getting into a bit of an arguement. So Hitler suddenly turned and spoke to one of the restaurant patrons. "I want you to know something," he shouted, "I'm going to kill 1 million jews and a clown!" The patron, who was startled, yet proud that the Furher choose to speak to him, stammered, "I, uh, but, uh why a clown?" With that, Hitler turned back to Himmler with a triumphant look on his face and waving his hands in the air said, "You see. I told you no one would care about the million jews." Rimshot please. Holocaust suffering turned funny.

Awwww. Too far Khushrenada. Too far. Alright. Well, maybe I shouldn't have posted that. Maxi might take offense at it and he's within his rights to do so. It just seemed to work so well with how this thread was going and how he wants to complain about us doing our job. But I'm still posting it in the hopes he can take it as just a bit of needling. Plus I'm tired right now and my poor judgement says I must take this opportunity.

Well I guess that means no one will care if I stop playing this game after the 50th game. I've noticed I have more fun being the host then playing as a player. And no it isn't because of what you posted Khushrenada I just feel I've lost my drive to play the game. I'll try as hard as I can in the next few games but after that I will just host.
Oh one other thing I nag because I care.

See that's why it's not fun anymore. You play the game hardcore. I did that too when I first started and after awhile it gets you down. It took awhile but I finally learned to let up. I started to play the game with different purposes in mind. I'd send people stupid messages just to mess around with them or get a pointless arguement going over nothing. Sometimes I played just to see another player last longer and just gave them free info no questions asked. Othertimes, I just wanted to make some jokes with a roleplay. If you take every game seriously, you are going to wear yourself down.
That's why thatguy and I were making all these joke posts last night. You just need to blow some steam after awhile and lighten up your mood. If you find you aren't having fun, do something to make it fun for yourself.
I care too that's why I try to help out all players I can.

Yeah I'm probably to serious for my own good when playing but the thing is I'm not really sure what else to do while trying to win and stay alive.I think I've set my play style to a certain way and I can't think of what else to do.

Try not playing to win. That was the hardest thing for me to get my head around. After a spell where I kept getting hit early, I finally made peace with myself that there are too many things I can't control no matter how well I play. So, then I started playing with different goals instead of winning. And eventually, the wins started coming back as well.

If anyone deserves to be brought back to life, it's me. I got bandwagoned for no reason (which started with you), and then sacrificed myself instead of fighting for my life when it could have meant taking innocent people with me.

For no reason? I told you and a few others my reasoning. Also how do we know for sure the the other person in the tie was innocent? Besides do you have any clue as to who is Mafia at this point?

We don't know for sure he's innocent, but this is Mafia; you don't really know anyone's role for sure until you personally investigated them or they're dead. I didn't have any real reason to suspect him, let alone take out a third person who odds would favor being a townie as well.

I was really hoping for a townie role in this one, though I didn't think I'd be completely unavailable. Sorry guys!
On this point, I just want to comment a little. In the past, some players have messaged me that they would sign-up but they don't have much time to play and so would just like to be a townie. That's fine by me. I have no problem doing that. This isn't against you Mop it up but it has been frustrating in the past when roles have been handed out a player doesn't show up for 3 days and dies because of inactivity and they were given a role. If you'd like to play but know you can't be around for some days and don't want the responsibility of role, pm the host. We'll appreciate because it will make the game more enjoyable.
It's like how The Perm bowed out for this game because he was afraid of getting the Godfather role. Tell us and we'll make sure you don't get it. It's obviously better to give it to a player who will be around to fulfill the role. We don't mind.
In fact, I've done this in the past. I contacted people to sign up for a game and they said they were interested but wouldn't be able to be around every day. I said that was fine and would be given a plain old townie role then and they signed up because of it. So, don't be afraid to let the host know your schedule so that we can tweak things before the game is in progress.
I just wanted to post that so at least in future games, people don't have to fear signing up and there are less cases of people being upset when a person isn't around to help in their role.

I didn't intend to not be around for any day, though. On Monday I went down for a nap and slept way longer than I intended, by the time I woke up it was after midnight and so it was too late to do anything. I know that it can be annoying when some people don't show up to play so I certainly didn't want to become one myself. I messed up, and let you down, and for that I apologize. As for requesting to be townie, well, to be fair I always want to be a townie, so I wouldn't feel right asking to get a specific role.

Basically from what I have been reading the Earth Mafia is down to its last person,The Riddler. Space mafia is down to 2 people but that could change since Lobo(aka Shyguy) could come back to life once. It appears that the Justice League has formed. Batman and Superman are still alive as is the Joker.Joker has been taking out most of the bad guys so that is why most people think the Joker needs to go. Also the Joker has been blackmailing people to give him or her points or the Joker is going to kill them.

Well since the 3rd day the ways to get points if someone manages to do all 3 then that would be 10 points right there. Assuming that each picture that one posts is not counted but you would get 3 points for the total day then I'd think the Joker would have to be active in voting out people and there is the fact that the Joker might of gotten the Orange ring then it would be easy to get to 50 points.

Someone can be brought back with the white ring, correct? has that ring been purchased?
Auction item. It'll be owned at the end of the day.
Was just about to mention that. I have a minor gripe about the silent auction. I was under the impression that you had to have a certain amount of points to get a specific item. I mean If I recall from the sign up thread the orange ring was to be bought for 21 points and yet it was sold for 6 points I believe. So I was confused as to why the items were going for less than the sign up thread detailed. I thought the auction items would cycle around each day until one had enough points to get the item.

I'm kinda confused about Uncle bobs post he said for the Mafia to send him points but since he was voted out doesn't that mean that if the Mafia sent Unclebob the points then the Mafia would be underpowered? He also said he would use the Perfect trap and Kytonite if the Mafia sent him points but how can he do that if he died in the vote. The only thing which I would think would make him alive in that situation is if he had the white ring.
Edit: You can't use the white ring to revive yourself if you have it and die. Ignore the above post...

My plan was for them to send me the points before the day ended - then, again, before the day ended, use the points to buy/use the two hero-killing weapons. Although I would have been voted out overnight, the weapons would have still been in play, weakening the hero for a mafia hit overnight.

Hmm it seems that the Space Mafia didn't get their hit. Whether this has do with a protection activating or the Mafia hitting Superman or Batman with out weakining I'm not sure. Question is did the Mafia manage to get the Orange ring or did the Joker get it. If the Mafia got it then that means it has a way to get quadruple the amount of points than normal for kills. If the Joker got it then there isn't much to worry about currently since Uncle bob is dead.I'm curious as to who got the white ring.

I don't know how much we're supposed to talk, since we're dead and all... but let me assure anyone who's wondering - I would make a great asset to the remaining mafia. Just to point out public information, I get to make a kill every night and I get to buy kryptonite/the perfect trap for half price. :D If I were remaining mafia, I'd be collecting all of my points into the hands of one man and putting a bid in on the black lantern. :D

My post was purely hypothetical and the information can be varified via public information if you do some research, so I'm not breaking any rules. The Riddler can investigate and some items that were bought are unaccounted for so somebody must have them... right?!?

I'm guessing since no townies have come back to life that the Mafia got the white ring.
Hypothetically speaking if the white ring is in the Mafia's possession if they used it to restore the joker, would he be on their team or on his own again?

Doesn't really matter now, since the townies just used it.

The Joker would be on his own if this scenario happened.

Kinda jumped the gun on Shyguy. I was just going by Shyguys post in the Day 5 thread. He is Lobo so thatguy won't announce that he is in the game again but Shyguy may have blown his move if he is back in the game.

I guess it is pointless to ask to be revived by the white ring now. If the townies did get the white ring it is a good move since whoever gets brought back to life tomorrow would most defenitly be 100% sure that that person was brought back with the black lanturn.

With that said, I have a ruling question... We were told if the option to form the Justice League was to be offered again, anyone would be allowed to buy into it and no one would be confirmed...
But now we're told the Justice League has been reformed? I don't recall an announcement for recruits...

That's because it wasn't offered again. The member of the justice league who died was revived. It wasn't a matter of someone buying in, but rather, the old guard was all alive again.

I'd guess that Khush and thatguy decided to just keep the original members in. I mean right now it is fairly balanced since there could be that the Justice League doesn't know who the other townies are. One might be mistaken to be mafia from them.Could be that everybody they seached is dead.

We discussed it and made a call. To be truthful, neither of us foresaw Sundoulos's revival for whatever reason, and I regret making that comment publicly. Had this specific course of events not happened, then we likely would not have brought back the JL. The idea of allowing any player to buy their way in was a matter of protecting the identity of mafia players, not to control the beam. As it stood, if it reformed, the two living members would have been able to control which direction the phantom zone ray was aimed, and the third member would just be there to allow it to happen.

Am I the only one who has found this game reeeallllly complicated?
It's not complicated. It's full of options with multiple paths to victory. As the game progress, many paths close. One can play the game as a normal round and ignore many of the extra options available. But you are probably better to pursue an option or two.
I've been applying a bit of a Civilization mentality to the games I host lately where one has many options to rule and conquer but sooner or later they have to commit to a path and make hard choices of what they need to attain victory and what is a luxury or inconsequential to their plan of attack. That said, I do believe it's time to go back to playing a pretty traditional game or two. We've had a lot of games with a lot of varitations or extras added.
The problem with Thatguy and myself is that we eat this strategic stuff up so we have a lot of ideas that we think would be great but that's because we are the most likely to want them or to use them in a game of mafia we were playing. Believe it or not but there were plaenty of other ideas that we bandied about but I wanted to try and keep it less complicated. I thought we met that goal but what often happens is when the players start getting into the game and digging into it themselves, they come up with some unanticipated ideas or questions. This can require a further refining of ideas which then leads to things getting rather complicated as one then has to start outling rules for many scenarios that will probably never come into play.
Often times, it seems that people look for the most complicated solution to a problem when simple answers exist. There are times where I just can't figure out why players want to pursue a harder course than needed.

You are correct. That was the idea we bandied about at the time of the Justice League demise. But the White Ring allows a player to return with all points and items he had accumulated at the time of his death. Since Sundoulos had the Justice League item as it were and so did two others, that power was reactivated. It is as though his death never happened. Like Thatguy mentioned. At the time of his death, it never crossed our minds that the townies would make a clever choice like that. It means that if a member of the League dies again, then that's it. It will not come back a third time.

For the record, I think this has been one of the best Mafia games I've played. Not at all overly complicated - but some of the rules could have been fleshed out a little better. More than once I planned on doing X only to be told no. ;)
I kinda took that to mean that anyone could buy in (and the former members would have to re-buy in as well) - meaning two (or three) mafia members could buy in and reform...

So, hypothetically, let's say you had allowed the League to reform and someone bought into it... *then* Sundoulos was revived... what would have happened then?

Let's see if I understand:
Batman has the power to investigate people, since there is no godfather, all mafia show up as mafia. He also is unkillable without the Perfect Trap.
Superman has the power to protect one player of his choosing a day and is also unkillable without Kryptonite.
Batman finds Superman then verifies another good player and then the league can be formed.
The Justice League has a minimum of three members but can have more than that.
The Justice League has the power to prevent people from returning from the dead with the Phantom Zone Projector.
If any Justice League member dies then the League is broken and loses the Phantom Zone Projector.
Did I miss anything?

Does the Justice League have any additonal benefits?

Based on how the rules sound, no one else can join the Justice League and the item description says it has three slots. To me, that means the JL can only have 3 members. No more, no less.

Yeah, you overcomplicated it.
Any townie who has saved up nine points could purchase a Justice League Membership. That could be Batman, that could be Superman, that could be a regular townie. Once any 3 townies have bought a membership, the League is formed and all three members are informed of who else is in the League with them. Since the League can only be purchased by townies, all League members have the benefit of knowing that they can trust each other 100%. (Unless of course Starro is controlling someone but that's a different point). The fact that three townies can form up is the biggest benefit. However, we also gave a side benefit to counteract a few other items/abilities by letting them use the Phantom Zone Projector which helps eliminate possibilites of who could return to the game.
That's all the League is about.
As for UncleBob's question, it was never guaranteed the League would return. We just thought we'd leave the possibility open in case we could see a reason for it since it ended so fast. Personally, I really didn't see how it could be revived or have much intention of bringing it back. I'm not sure if Thatguy was working on any ideas for it but in my mind, it was dead. Congrats on finding a legit way to bring it back. I didn't see it coming.

On the subject of players coming up with unexpected scenarios, I have got to give credit to The Unagi for his brilliant extortion scheme. I was wary about point sharing since this is the first game with points where it's ever been done but he came up with one of the best uses for that ability in my mind. Especially Day 2 when UncleBob had 2 votes and he cast the third really applying some pressure to UncleBob to give him some points to change his votes. I'll admit, if I could pay a player to vote with me, I'd take that opportunity.

I'm finding these results more funnier and funnier. The majority of the people I contacted this game have turned up Mafia. I figured since I haven't worked with GP that much lately I would try to start that up again but I really didn't much back from her. Once the game ends whenever it does I am going to post about the people I contacted and what I think what they were doing in regards to what I think they were doing with their responses.
Starro is the last Mafia member if Shyguy didn't revive himself. I think I know what has been happening with Starro. Either it keeps on taking over normal townies role and then having to kill that person at night so it can take over another person or he has managed to take over Superman and is using Superman's power to protect itself while sending in hits.

Since it's too late for this to happen, I'd like to suggest a plan that could have been more fun. :)
I don't know if this would work - but could Starro have, in theory, controlled a player's points/bids - along with their item usage as well?
Starro should have collected all the points from his mafia, transferred them to the townie/hero character he was controlling, forced that character to bid all his points on the Black Lantern, then forced that player to use the Lantern to revive someone of Starro's choosing. :D
It's a solid plan, I know. :D

stevey does have a point. I mean if Shyguy wasn't alive then that means that all you really had to do was vote out Starro and that would be the game. Since Shyguy would be dead and then there would be no more Mafia. On the slight chance that Shyguy was dead all this time and then sent a PM to the hosts to bring its self alive before the vote ended then that means if you managed to vote out Starro then it would be pretty pointless to bring yourself back to life since the game would end by voting out Shyguy.

There are only TWO people I could trust in the game, and that's the other members of the Justice League. I even suspect JR, but what the heck. He's been supportive and communicating on a regular basis.
Yeah, I didn't go along with your claims, but you didn't work at backing them up until your place in the game was on the line.

Looks like stevey was telling the truth. Results are up and stevey was a townie and Sundolous was a townie as well. I have a feeling I know who Starro is now.

stevey does have a point.
We had a delicate situation of the possibility of Starro controlling Superman, and some fuzzy understanding of the rules that I admit to not really grasping the details, even after being explained. We were all voting Shyguy (thanks to his posting and then saying nevermind) and figured if Stevey was Starro, he was using Superman to protect Shyguy. So our vote would have failed. But I was thinking maybe if this was the case then whoever Starro is would be vulnerable.

And I though UB had a good game going. If shyguy can pull this off it will be hard to top.

There is a actually a easy way around the Starro controlling Superman. I thought the townies were on the right track as far as item bought on Day 6 but I'm guessing that no one really followed up with that type of thing with the vote. What I'm not getting is why we haven't really had any good vote outs lately. I mean Batman is still in the game but there hasn't many Mafia members being voted out. It should be pretty easy to figure out who Starro is since there isn't that many players left...

Why would the mafia kill vudu? There are much better targets for the mafia to eliminate asap and he's still a viable scapegoat to hide behind.
GP won the Black Lantern auction, though if our guy was around we would have won it cause he ended up with a little over 100 points... Seemed like it was a sink or swim at the time, and if I was mafia, I'd have done what you did to get to the end.
Getting the killer on the mafia side would been a much more advantageous move.

But then the shop would have had Kryptonite in the hero section making it obvious that the starro had superman under control which he didn't/doesn't. Not to mention that night actions are due after the day closes so Starro could changed it back to himself in time.

GP was voted out Friday. UB took out most of the mafia for us. There are 3 members of the JL. So who's left? 3 who aren't part of the JL. Well, now with the mafia hitting Sundoulos, there are 2 confirmed townies.
Here's the deal: the person claiming to be Superman could in fact be Starro and is just using Superman's powers to do what we ask. But this person has not used Superman to protect other mafia, so it seems that its an unlikely thing. We know Shyguy is mafia, and there is one mafia left, but two players. Can you say with 100% certainty that you know who Starro is, or are you just going with your gut?

The townies wouldn't get to kill Superman. I was just recently told what would work against Superman and its been available to purchase the whole time. Also, if you are voted out, you don't get to do night actions. That screwed me up with The Joker. I was thinking that he'd be able to make a kill after getting voted out, but he couldn't. So, take out Starro, he can't use Superman on a new target.

Alright. Let's slow down the discussion. A lot of shop talk going on here that is getting pretty close to dead players influencing living players. If you're still in the game, get back to the day thread. If you want to make apologies or explain, you can do so there or wait until you get here or the game ends. Dead people, (Maxi,Stevey) let's dispense with the hints and suggestions about what the townies might do or should target.
Title: Re: Mafia XLVIII: DC Universe. Dead Thread. Series Cancelled.

Might I make a suggestion Khushrenada. If the dead people want to talk about the game to other dead players they do it via PM. Would that be okay?
Title: Re: Mafia XLVIII: DC Universe. Dead Thread. Series Cancelled.

That has always been acceptable. Just as long as the Dead players aren't contacting the living players.

To answer your question Khushrenada about the better host I'd say that thatguy would be the better game host and you are the better story host. There was a few times when sending PMs to thatguy I wasn't sure on so I asked to clarify the answer he gave and he did so clearly. He also responded back to some PMs I sent him even though I got the answer back from you already. I had asked thatguy first about a certain question and he still responded back even though I had already had it answered by you Khushrenada.

Anonymous messages for everyone had a fee of $10. Payable via paypal and a few other methods. You can PM me for the details.
It would probably cost 2 points for everyone you sent it to, but Khush and I might've come up with a deal given the circumstances, then made the deal public to everyone.

The biggest issue is that while 12 of a player's own points can revive a player, dead players can't use points. Did you give any of your points away to players currently playing while you were still alive? Have they not spent 12 of them yet? Maybe then you have a shot. They might be able to spend your own points to revive you, but only after midnight. That's a night action.

I didn't get into specifics before. The main thing is that you can only be revived on Thursdays, which makes it even more confusing.
Edit: For the record, there's at least one player who gladly wants to see you come back to life, and who already tried to send you points.

See, but even though you killed me on the first day, Khushrenada remained hosting the game. Since I'm dead, there's no one to run the point shop. Since I can't redeem your points, you can't come back to life. You just killed the only man who had a hope of bringing you back to life. I have to say that's not your best move this game.

Let's layout some of my classic moves this game:
1. I did the closest to closing time vote in mafia history, showing up Unclebob's failed attempt from the night before. 2. I saved the Joker with that amazing tie breaker vote which led to the epic explosion. 3. I misdirected an early vote against vudu with brilliant psychology. 4. I returned from the dead and faked out the Justice league for days. 5. I talked Green Lantern into killing a townie instead of me when he KNEW I was mafia. 6. I did this all with the Weekend at Bernies mafia.

I killed as many people as the entire good-guy side did - on my own. 4.) I managed to sweet-talk some idiot into saving me, only to kill him the next day. I'm that good. 5.) Three people killed, in one day - by me. :D 6.) Managed to get players to return my points *and* actually give me extra points in return. Thanks guys. :D 7.) Kept playing with words, laying hints throughout the threads as to who I was... which was fun. :D
