Welcome to the 48th Official NWR Mafia Game!
The first of a new year. And something a bit different this time at least for me. A joint-hosted mafia game by Thatguy and myself. We've been batting around this idea for sometime and we're proud to finally get to it. For the first time in a long time, neither Thatguy or myself will be playing and it should be interesting to see what happens without us getting targetted early and causing distractions. That said, we've tinkered with an idea to allow us to play a bit in this game.
However, I'm sure you're all eager to get playing again so let's get to it!
It's surprising that we haven't really done a Comics theme yet since it's ripe with opportunities. Thatguy and myself are both quite familiar with the DC Universe so we are going with that as our theme and story basis. Any character from the DC Universe is open for the taking for those wishing to roleplay.
The Story
More details on the story to come. For now, to quickly sum it up, a device capable of controlling all time and space has been activated fracturing the DCU which means any character dead or living can be roaming around from any time period in the DCU. The Heroes (townies) won't to find the device before the villians (mafia) to ensure that time and space are repaired properly and prevent the villians from using such power for their own nefarious purposes. In addition, there will be two mafias. One made up of Earth Villians and one made up of Space Villians. That's just evil!
The Rules
The Basic Rules:
(plagiarized and modified from Pyropizm's rules post)
Everyday each player is allowed to vote for whomever they believe is mafia. Since all roles remain anonymous, mafia members will vote along with the townies.
Each day a new thread will be made and will open up with a narrative. Each player then has the chance to vote off another player. Simply type in BOLD for whom you wish to vote. You may change your vote as much as you like but you only get 1 vote a day.
Every night, the mafia is able to make one hit. These are not based on calendar numbers, but rather on game days. The only one who may contact the game-master with the kill is the Godfather. Because there are two mafias in thie game, one mafia will make a hit on odd game days and the other will make a hit on even game days.
For the townies to win, they must kill all mafia members and "Other" roles.
For the mafia to win, they only need to tie the game. I.E., there are two townies left and two mafia members left. However, a mafia would also have to eliminate the other opposing mafia and kill the "Other" roles just the same as the townies.
For the "Other" roles to win, they would have to fulfill the requirements of their role. Those requirements are explained in each role description.
Finally, the townies and mafias will have members with special abilities to help give them an advantage. Those roles and abilities will be detailed under the ROLES section of the rules.
The Roles
The roles will be posted as I gather more pictures. This is our response to Shyguy's AAA mafia game and we intend to meet it. I can, however, give you a tease as to what to expect.
Heroes (Townies)
Batman - This player can not be killed by The Joker, Mafia hit or the Daily Vote unless someone applies "The Perfect Trap" item against him that day. Then his immunity is taken away but only for that day. The only exception would be a successful hit by Bane or Darkseid. As well, he has the ability to investigate any player of his choosing each night. His is the only investigative role where he get a correct result back everytime no matter what the role is. Even Godfather roles he can see. The only way he gets a false result is if he is under the control of Starro or Gorilla Grodd.
Superman - This player can not be killed by The Joker, Mafia hit or the Daily Vote unless someone applies Kryptonite against him that day. Then his immunity would be taken away but only for that day. The only exception would be a successful hit by Doomsday or Metallo. As well, he has the power to protect any player of his choosing except himself. Moreover, no item or ability can break his protection. The only way his protection fails is if he is under the control of Starro or Gorilla Grodd and they send his protection else where.
Wonder Woman - Wonder Woman is a townie with the ability to kill. She is the vigilante role. She can can choose to eliminate any player she wants (1 per day) but they have to be a guilty party. Either Mafia or the Joker. If she kills a townie, then she is eliminated from the game. There is one exception. If she is under the control of Starro or Gorilla Grodd and they make her hit a townie, she will not be eliminated from the game since she was not in control of herself. As well, any kill restrictions that a player may have apply to her. So, if she puts a hit on Superman but he hasn't been weakened by Kryptonite, the hit is ineffective and she survives such a mistake. Hey, sometimes heroes fight amongst themselves.
The Joker - The Killer. Every night, he can choose any player he wants to eliminate from the game. He only wins by eliminating every player and being the last one standing. The only kill restrictions the Joker has is that he must use "The Perfect Trap" to kill Batman and Kryptonite to kill Superman. He can not kill those two roles on his own.
Further Game Rules
In this mafia game, there will be a point system again. I will make a point system section in the rules detailing how they work and what abilities/items a player can get with their points.
With regards to the mafia roles and why there are so many. Not every role will be used. In effort to make things a bit more exciting and provide more strategy, each mafia will choose the roles they want. The goal is to have 2 mafias with 5 players each. Obviously, that may change based on player turnout but that is the goal. Neither mafia will know what roles the other mafia has chosen until the game begins on Feb. 21st. So, we could end up with two completely different mafias or two very similar mafias. Who knows how that may all play out.
Be sure to check back on Feb. 20 in case you have been selected as mafia as you will need to figure out which roles you want. If you don't show up, Thatguy and myself will choose a role for you. Thatguy would choose for the Space Mafia and I would choose for the Earth Mafia.
Keep checking back in the this thread as I will post whenever further details are revealed. It should be noted that Thatguy and myself are still tweaking things over so there could be a slight change to a role before game time but we will notify you on any change.
At this point, we just need to post and explain about the point system at some point and we should be good to go. If you have any questions so far, just ask.

Runner-up Prize:
Grant Morrison Works. Final Crisis and Batman.
This was a tough one. I debated whether to break-up the Final Crisis stories and Morrison's Batman works. The problem is that Morrison doesn't really stick to one book when telling his Batman narrative. In fact, this won't even be the full story of his Batman run. It actually starts a bit in the pages of "52" then in the "Batman" comic series with a story "Batman and Son". There are a few other parts after that put I didn't start buying the issues until "Batman R.I.P." and continuing on from there. While I could probably seperate the two, "Batman R.I.P." definitely leads into Final Crisis and the only lasting thing to come out of the Final Crisis event is what Morrison wrote about afterwards in his Batman stories. So, what the heck, I'll be generous and bunch it all together. Here's what it looks like:

To be fair, there are a few ok things with the Justice League issues.
A Few Last Thoughts with regards to the prizes.
The details with how winners will be determined will be mentioned soon but it should be noted that a person doesn't have to take the prize that their position may give them. Basically, at the end of the game, we'll have a ranking of the players from first to last. The top player will choose a prize and we'll go on down the line until all the prizes are gone. So, for instance, the #1 player doesn't have to take the Grand Prize. If they want the #3, that is their choice and they'll get that prize. As well, if a player doesn't not want to claim a prize, that is fine. There is no obligation to take a prize. We'll just move to the next player in line. I've just based the rankings on my own thoughts with regards to each series. Depending on the sign-up size I might add a few more prizes still, so tell your friends.

I'm down for some mafia, but I never really got into comics so I'll have to do some research for a character.
After looking around, I guess I'll be in as the Blue Beetle. He punched Hitler in the face and takes "vitamins" to get super powers I guess thats good enough for me.

?? So what? The ring ain't coated. That's pretty lame any-whoo. The air isn't yellow, just create an air compressing gun, or increase the air pressure and blow the walls out. The green energy doesn't have to touch anything, smarty-pants.
BTW, that color limitation is the WORSE weakness ever given to a hero. Going after ways to diminish a GL's will power would be a better way to stop him.

Thankfully they didn't do that weak limitation in the Justice League cartoon, it's why I prefer John Stewart as a GL.

John is damaged goods. He blew up a planet, killed everyone except one on it, and has recurring nightmares over it. (Some friction between some of the heroes on JLU would have been interesting though. And not caused by the immaturity of Flash. I would have loved Booster Gold and Blue Beetle on the team causing mischief in place of Flash acting like an overgrown boy.)
Meanwhile, I, Hal Jordan, took out a city, became evil and whooped everyone's ass, sacrificed myself to save the world, became an all-powerful force of vengence, and became human again. And I sleep like a baby. Taa daa! The bestest GL ever. And Batman doesn't like me.

I am not good at roleplaying, so I probably won't be commenting too often. I don't read the comics, but at least in the show it turned out John was framed for that and the planet was never destroyed.

At this point, though, the ring isn't entirely powerless against yellow. Actually, I can't remember for certain, but it might have no weakness to yellow at all. After everything happened with Hal and Parallax the first time around, a green ring's bearer had to know and overcome fear for yellow to be able to attack, but since Parallax isn't contained in the GL power battery anymore, that might not even be the case at all.
Of course at this point, there's a whole rainbow of lanterns to choose from, so no one said anyone had to stick to green. I would imagine someone should look up the orange lantern, which focuses on avarice. That could be a fun role to play.

Kyle Rayner's ring did not have the yellow weakness. Instead, the weakness was the stupidity of Kyle Rayner.

With two mafias, it'd be best if we have more players!. We plan to have a story go up each day, either at the start of the day or mid-day. Feel free to play as a villain, hero, or anti-hero. And no, not everyone has to be a Batman character.
I'm just now getting my act in this together, since we had that long downtime, I've been pretty out of it. We actually put most of this together back before the break. Khush is being the hero and supplying the prizes somehow.
Tentatively, items for sale in the points shop will be based off of DC Universe items. Moreso, this time around, players (Mafia and townie), will be able to share points to buy higher-priced objects. Trust and strategy will be key for townie players to purchase items easier than the mafia, since either mafia could probably pool their resources to capture a great item.
That's all from me for now, but you'll hear more in the future.

Very early DC Comic special that crossed over with Superman... thus would, somewhat, make him a member of the DC Multiverse.
Likewise, the Amalgam universe and the Marvel universe would loosely be parts of the DC Multiverse. So many options!

From what I understand, the Multiverse are all of those alternate timelines (i.e. Earth-2, Earth-3, etc.). The DC Universe is the main "official" one.

I didn't see this thread, as the funhouse is pretty much total **** these days so I venture in maybe once a week, but I'll sign up.
I'll be the Phantom, because the two series DC did in the late 80's/early 90's are the only DC comics I own.
Just remembered the Phantom 2040 game, fond memories!
The game was based on the TV series, as was the Marvel comics series. While the comics weren't that great, the TV show and game were pretty much awesome. Still waiting on a DVD release of the show...

I disagree. There was an episode of the Duck Dodgers series where there was a mix-up at the Dry Cleaners and he got a Green Lantern uniform/ring (apparently, Dry Cleaners clean rings?) and had to take on Sinestro.

Under that theory though, someone could choose to be Elmo, Charlie Brown, or even Gilligan (since Warner Bros. owns the rights to those as well). In which case, this become Warner Bros. rather than DC Universe.

Truth be told, I'd say anything that's been published with a DC logo on it is fair game. Many WB cartoon properties were published by DC for a little while, so do some research and feel free to pick out someone from there, just don't complain if you get stepped on by Imperiex and die or something.

If it had a connection to DC, yes in most cases. If you play as Birdo, even the Birdo that was in one of those Mario comics, she has to be masquerading as a DC comics super hero (or super heroine.)

well the other thing is i don't want to end up being the mafia godfather...i just had my blood pressure done and its really high (138/98,91) so any stressfull thing is just too much for me. I also have some sort of cold...so yeah.

Decided to post this here instead of the big block of text that is the rules so far.
Here are the items that can be purchased by players in the game with their points.
Note: There are 4 Markets. Some markets are only available to certain players.
Open Market (All players can purchase these items) Concussion Bomb (8 points) - Nullifies any protection power except Superman's.
Blue Ring (4 points) - Allows a player three votes for the same day but the next day, the player's vote doesn't count.
Orange Ring (21 points) - Doubles all points a player gets. (only 1 available. Permanent item.)
Indigo Ring (4 points) - Change a player's vote to your choosing.
Red Ring (40 points) - Eliminate a player. (Only 1 available)
White Ring (30 points) - Bring back a dead player. Player resumes game with same role as before. (Only 1 available)
(Item Name still being decided) (5 points) - Block an investigation except for Batman.
Oracle/Calculator's Favor (2 points) - Send an anonymous message to any player in the game. Message will be sent by a host.
Villain Weapons (Only available to mafia members)
Kryptonite (20 points) - Makes Superman susceptable to attack.
The Perfect Trap (20 points) - Make Batman susceptable to attack
Black Ring (40 points) - Bring back a dead player to serve in your mafia (Only 1 available)
Hero Weapons (Only available to Townies)
Green Ring (4 points) - Nullify a Player's Power for that day.
Justice League (9 points) - 3 players can form the Justice League. Justice League has the following benefits. Players will know each other. All points from any kill will be doubled. Have access to the Phantom Zone Portal. Using the Phantom Zone Portal prevents a player from coming back in the game via black ring or white ring and negates Doomsday/Ra's Al Ghul's power. Every day, the Justice League must choose and inform the host of a target they want to apply the Phantom Zone Portal to. The player can be living or dead. That player will be tagged by the Phantom Zone Portal the rest of the game.
Joker Toys (Only For the Joker obviously)
Kryptonite (10 points) - Already Explained
The Perfect Trap (10 points) - Already Explained
Joker Laughing Gas (50 points) - 4 people of his choosing die.

Wow! Got one huge package today.
Amazing - can't wait to dig into these and see what I've been missing since my days of comic collecting. Looks like Khushy even threw in an extra 4-part mini-series for me. :D
