Title: Gameboy player question
Post by: darkfogel on May 02, 2003, 09:38:31 AM
Hi there!
I have a question about the gameboy player. Will it works with GC/GBA connectivity like Metroid Prime? If I finish Metroid Fusion on my Gameboy player, will it unlock the Metroid game on my Gamecube Metroid Prime?
If yes, I might think to buy it since I don't want to buy the GBA...
Thanks!

No, unfortunately, there's no way for a GameCube game to recognize that the GB Player is installed and running. At least, not just yet. Perhaps this is something future software can do, but we just don't know yet. Just borrow a GBA to do the link stuff, it doesn't take long.

This is like the most overasked question ever.
The answer is very simple. NO. The Gameboy Player turns the Gamecube into a GBA. Therefore it is impossible for the unit to function as a Gamecube and a GBA at the same time which is what would be required to do a link up. Plus in reality a GBA/GC link up requires two screens which isn't possible when they share the same screen.

Surely though Nintendo will share enough of the emulator/boot code so that future titles will be able to access what's in the cartridge port of the Gameboy Player, though? It's not like you hook the thing directly to the video ribbon cables and controller hookups inside your Gamecube, it does use some code on bootup to know where things go... Nintendo would've been foolish to build the add-on and not allow that functionality when they've been the ones so behind this GBA+GC connection push... But I guess it could be true...
Edit: You don't suppose there'll be another e-Reader situation, where the American Gameboy Player will have this functionality, but the Japanese version won't (like how the Japanese version of the e-Reader lacked the link port and the extra S-RAM until the recently announced release of the e-Reader+ there)? Maybe when there were mumblings before about the American Gameboy Player not needing a boot disc, they were actually working on something closer to these lines? It wouldn't work for older games like Metroid Prime probably, but for newer games, it'd make things a lot more convenient for those who already owned GBPs.

Hi!
I'm a bit late but thanks for all the answers...
I do have a friend that has a gameboy advance. But I don't see him that often due to distance difficulties. Also I don't have a GBA/GC Link.
I would have prefered to buy a GBP and Metroid Fusion but oh well.
I'll just forget it.
Thanks again for all your answers!

Well The GBP and GC connection is up in the air on how that would work. But you could have two players One can use the GBA and the other uses the GBP, thus you can use the gameboy link cable. I think so in theory. Rick doesn't the GBP have the GBA connectors where you can have muiltiplayer games?
Like it would if you had two GBA's and a link cable for two player games, would this work with the GBP-GBA? Also can you use the batlle feature in Golden sun? like have one GBA with Golden Sun and the GBP with Golden sun 2:the lost age?
Kinda like how the Mario GBA games work with Mario arcade.

No it's not. Current games cannot link up to the GBP because they don't have the software to boot it. Future games could be programmed to do so however. You can hook up a GBP to another GC the same way you'd hook up another Game Boy Advance, but it requires two screens. You can also hook it up to another GBA just fine. Or again if you want, you could hook up two GBPs if you have two TVs.
