Title: Gran Turismo 5
Post by: NWR_insanolord on November 24, 2010, 05:33:55 AM
I was pretty sure I was going to buy this, but early reviews are making me think twice. Reviews are good, but significantly lower than Forza 3, which is currently selling for half of what GT5 is on Amazon. Anyone here play GT5 (or, preferably, Forza 3 AND GT5) who could offer some advice?

If I were you I would hold on for a few days before you make your choice. I haven't played GT5 yet, but I have played Forza 3 extensively. I was hoping for Forza 3 to better than Forza 2, but in regards to certain aspects I was dissapointed. What I can say is that GT5 does have a few things that Forza 3 does not, like a weather system, dirt tracks, karting, and night racing. Forza 3 is still a great game, but it just felt to me like a Forza v2.01.

I wasn't going to buy it for a while anyway. I don't have the money for it at the moment, and if I did I'd spend it on DKCR and GoldenEye before this.

I'm disappointed that the walls are so stupid still. You just bounce off of then and its a legit tactic to use the wall to help you get around corners if you screw up a turn. Just like in the other Gran Turismos. And also, I'd like there to be a little feedback, like sparks or something when you hit walls. It just seems like the sense of speed isn't there. But hey, maybe thats for realism.
The graphics are gorgeous, but the shadows are hiding for some reason. They are always jittering.

I find it hilarious that hurling myself into a group of racers and having them effectively carry me through a tough turn is consistently the quickest way for me to pull into first.

Yup. Seems like "realistic" is limited solely to how the car drives on various terrains. But realistic collision is out of the question.

So it still is more of an arcade racer than a racing sim. Damn, I was hoping they would have added damage to the car so as to affect its racing performance. I don't care as much for the visual damage.
In Forza 3 if you crash, bump, break to hard, and whatnot you will see that the car's performance won't be the same if you make little to no mistakes. Even Forza 2 had this kind of simulative damage.

Found this:
"That's a good thing because other areas weren't quite as straight-forward and realistic — like vehicle "interaction" — an odd puppy for GT5. You don't start the game in GT mode with vehicle damage unlocked. We've been told once you reach level 20 (we're only at level 11), you'll get access to realistic damage including mechanical problems and then, when you reach level 40, you get access to simulation-level damage where parts can fall off and cars can be completely totaled. But, for the first few levels you get a bumper car-like effect that's almost comical. Instead of wrecking, you just sort of smack into each other and bounce off. It doesn't matter whether the car you're driving is one of the 200 "premium" cars or one of the 800 "standard" ones." - http://jalopnik.com/5699667/gran-turismo-5-first-drive
What an odd choice. Actually it makes no sense... oh Kazunori, what the hell were you thinking lol.

My uncle was having some fun yesterday driving full tilt into other racers with the only repercussion being the silly "doonk" crash sound.
I don't want to learn how to race without damage for 20 levels, I think I can handle the "real game" from the start.

I'm betting Polyphony digital expected that everyone playing will be serious enough about motor sport to do their best not to make contact. I guess the thought of people gaming their game never crossed their auto obsessed heads.
