Title: Wii Three Kings
Post by: UncleBob on November 04, 2010, 11:50:54 PM
We got our Red Wiis in yesterday. Man, they're sexy. Like candy.
I really want one. But I just can't come up with a reason for it. Yeah, I have five GameCubes (and they must be equal!), but, aside from my first and my Panasonic Q, I pretty much picked up the extras cheap (one with a minty copy of Pikmin 2 on eBay for I think $40, one with a used copy of Double Dash with bonus disc for $30 at GameStop and one without a power cord/av cables for three bucks or something at a Game Crazy going out of business).
In this case, I paid full price for the original at launch and virtually full price for the second not that long ago. Now, of course, with the GameCubes, I can do all kinds of fun things, like linking Mario Kart: Double Dash, Kirby Air Ride and the various Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance titles (also, connectivity titles like Four Swords Adventures).
The only thing I could do with multiple Wii systems is link on-line titles (Have there been *any* Wii LAN enabled games?). This is neat, but kinda ruins the fun of getting to do something special. Of course, the second Wii has the HBC with Gecko loaded for playing imported games, so there's at least an excuse for that.
But I just can't come up with a reason to justify the pretty red Wii. I already have two copies of Wii Sports - I sure don't need another. I already have New Super Mario Bros. Wii - no reason to have another one of those. Now, if it came with All-Stars or, say, Mario Kart - then we'd be set - I could either get a game I didn't have that I planned to get or a game I plan to get another copy of at some point down the road (for linking the Wii systems together, of course). Also, if it had that super-neat-o 25th Anniversary edition of Super Mario Bros., that'd be a midnight release for sure.
But... meh. All it has going for it is that it's purdy red. Unless I'm missing something?

I think The Conduit is LAN-enabled if you hack the config file.
I've had a red Wii for a week, and yeah, there's nothing special unless you want a cardboard version of the New Super Mario Bros. box... The system reminds me of red Lego bricks.

Wait! Is it available now? Should I check to see if stores broke the street date? As for your trouble uncle maybe if you have a friend who lost their wii you can give them your old one. Thats my plan.

No, it's not out yet. I've been working on an unboxing video, but I haven't had time to edit it... hopefully, I can post that soon.

You'd get a red Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk, which I don't think will be available separately. How many Wii Remotes, Nunchuks, and Motion Plus accessories do you have?

Hey, there's something.
Right now, I'm sporting 5 Wii Remotes (two black, three white), three Motion Pluses (two black, one white) and three Nunchuks (one black, two white).
One of those black Wii Remotes/Motion Plus hasn't even been opened yet. Wonder if I could find the receipt for it - that'd give me $40 to go toward the Wii... hmmm... Good job, Mop it up!

Why don't you import a red system from Japan? You'll get exclusive SMB ROM-hack plus access to the Japanese Virtual Console.

Guh... I can't imagine how expensive that would be. :(
So what? It doesn't seem like money is much of an object for you, considering how many needless duplicates you already have of stuff.
seriously. you were looking for a reason, and what better reason to buy yet another console than to have access to the Japanese VC/WiiWare and Japanese Imports?
Think of all those games you get to play that will never be released over here.

What? The Wii box makes it look like the game comes in a regular case. Why does NOA always do this? Europe gets regular game cases for Wii Sports, Link's Crossbow Training, and the bundled version of Wii Sports Resort, all we get are stupid cardboard cases that just barely fit the disc.
I am getting a replacement Wii soon. I am leaning towards getting this bundle since it would be cheaper to buy a used copy of Wii Sports Resort ($22 at GameStop) than a used copy of New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I am not that excited for the deep red color though.

I've been thinking of buying a Wii so I'm picking one of these up next paycheck. It sucks NSMBW doesn't come in a real case, I don't want the disc to get damaged.
Title: Re: Oh, Woe is Me

I just got the red Wii. I was hoping it would have some emblems or something (like the new Mario DSi XL does), and the copy of NSMBW doesn't have a registration code. Of coarse it comes with the 3.4 firmware and has a video channel that shows you how to get your Wii online (for new owners). I can't log onto the Wii Shop Channel until I get my current situation resolved with Nintendo.

Well, I did it. Returned the extra (non Wii Remote Plus) controller from when I bought the black Wii - that's $36. $75 Walmart Gift Card. $20 Employee Discount. Got the nunchuk - $20. Pretty much paid $49 for the Wii (not counting the two games, since I already have 'em both).

Title: Re: Wii Three Kings

Guh. I should have remembered from my Black Wii, how not-fun setting up the Wii is.
First, I have to figure out, exactly, how to get the thing wired into my entertainment center. Let me tell you, that's not fun. For anyone.
So, I get it all hooked up (with the option to display on my big, center TV or the right, small TV). Then, I have to figure out how to plug it in. When my house catches on fire, y'all will know why.
Then, I have to go through all the regular Wii settings. Time/Date, language, etc., etc. Then, I have to take an SD card from one of my other Wiis and copy everything over to a new SD card for the Red Wii. Even though the games won't play, I still feel this necessary.
Then, I have to re-arrange all of the channels on the main menu. To match my other Wiis. Except, of course, now this one doesn't have a Wii Speak channel. No big deal, just annoying.
Then, I have to go into the Photo Channel and set my wallpaper (which was copied onto the memory card - it's the "Thanks for being such a big fan" image Nintendo sent out. I'm such a whore.
Then, I have to go into the internet settings and set up my connection. Doing so reminds me that I only have two Wii LAN adapters and I need to get another one. Yes, need.
Then, I have to go into the Wii Shop and download all the updates for all the channels available. Which is virtually all of them. Which takes forever. Then, for kicks, I get to download all the available demos again. Which reminds me, I need to download the Frobot demo. Three times. That shouldn't screw up the demo stats anywhere. Oh, and the demos are already on the memory card, so I can't download them directly to it - I have to download them to the system, then go in and delete them (once they're downloaded, I can play the old ones from the memory card). Mind you, this is stupid, because they're demos and there's no good reason to lock a free download (except, of course, I can't re-download the demos that have been removed, so those can't be played on the new Wii).
Oh, and I have to go into my White Wii, into the Dr. Mario and send the Friend Battle Demo to the Red Wii. Oh, but before I do that, I need to register my Red Wii as friends with the White Wii. And the White Wii with the Red Wii. Might as well Friend the Black and Red Wiis while I'm at it.
Meanwhile, I really need to get a USB-powered sensor bar, so I can just use the one bar for all three systems.
Then, of course, I have to go to Club Nintendo and register the PIN and the system serial number. Then put the Wii Sports in my (now) Three Disc Wii Sports case. And dig out one of my extra New Super Mario Bros. cases (y'all laughed at me for buying all those from Hollywood Video! Who's laughing now, jerks?) to case the copy of NSMB into.
Then, finally, I'm all set to play my new Wii. Yay!
Then, I have to go into the Photo Channel and set my wallpaper (which was copied onto the memory card - it's the "Thanks for being such a big fan" image Nintendo sent out. I'm such a whore.
Wait, when did they send that out?

It's a little thank-you card that Nintendo sent out to My Nintendo members who had a lot of stuff registered when they switched over to Club Nintendo.
I'm more interested in hearing about this setting of wallpaper, I didn't know you could do that.

No one (but Nintendo) knows for sure what the requirements were - but I had like 125 things registered.
Thanks. It sucks I didn't get that though since I had a ton of stuff registered on MyNintendo.
Don't take it personal, Nintendo just loves me more. ;)
Curious - if you can make time, log into Club Nintendo, go to your list of registered items (not your to-do list or such, but the one that includes *everything*. Cut and paste the list into a database program (Excel, Calc, etc.) and sort by date. How many items did you have registered before Feb 2009?
Title: Re: Wii Three Kings
Post by: TJ Spyke on December 20, 2010, 11:06:35 PM
I had 49 items registered before February 2009. I know some people have more, but I would think that would be considered enough for that thank-you letter.
Title: Re: Wii Three Kings
Post by: UncleBob on December 20, 2010, 11:09:36 PM
My best guess is that the cut off was 100 items. Everyone I've heard from that's posted a number was over 9000 100.

I think that everyone registered to MyNintendo should have gotten the thank-you card, since it was a useless program before Club Nintendo so all the people who put up with it deserved something.

I got some neat stuff from it. Of course, the Zelda Collector's Disc was the best, but there was the Metroid Prime 2 demo disc. There was also the Zelda feather stylus, the Brain Age rainbow stylus set, and the Big Brain Academy Wii Remote Key Chain/light. There was also the three-month free Nintendo Power subscription. And, apparently, an Avalanche 1080 beanie hat that I NEVER GOT. :(

There were three ways to get it. You could subscribe to Nintendo Power, buy a new GameCube that included it, or register a certain number of a select group of games with MyNintendo.

There were three ways to get it. One, by purchasing a specially marked GameCube bundle. Two, with a 1-year subscription to Nintendo Power. Three, if you registered a GameCube and two games with MyNintendo when it first started (two games doesn't sound like much, but at the time, only four games had registrations - Double Dash, Mario Party 5, Avalanche 1080 and Mario and Luigi: Super Star Saga). I got a copy from the Nintendo Power promo and from registering with MyNintendo. One of my copies is still sealed, still in the shipping envelope. I plan on using it to retire. ;)

That was a horrible business decision, but it made for a great Christmas gift.

Is the Zelda collector's disc different than the one Kmart gave away with a pre-sell of Wind Waker? It came with Master Quest on it as well as the original Ocarina of Time.
I wonder if I realized before that UB is OCD...
Title: Re: Wii Three Kings

Yes. Obviously, the Wind Waker Pre-Sell disc (which was given away via most major retailers) has Ocarina of Time and Master Quest on it.
The Zelda Collector's Edition has the two NES titles (Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: Adventure of Link) along with the two N64 titles (Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask). It also has a short Wind Waker demo and a retrospective of the various Zelda titles.

Yet another reason why Super Mario All-Stars is a better deal than Virtual Console downloads.
Not only can I play it in any Wii at any time, but I can actually play it in multiple Wiis at once. Once it's loaded in one Wii, I can pop the disc into another system and load it up again. Whoo-hoo!

Actually, at that time I was active on the GameCube board over at GameFAQs, and there was a lot of confusion among the people there due to people hearing different things from Nintendo, so I emailed Nintendo Customer Support to get clarification, and the woman who responded explicitly told me to go ahead and keep the extra copy.

The forced 4:3 ratio, IMHO is nice. Having to go in and reset the Wii's settings for VC titles is just stupid. Obviously, the graphics and sound (unless you're a purist). The extra levels in Lost Levels/SMB2j actually being obtainable is a bit of a bonus. The superior save system is a plus as well. Plus, SMB3 has the "Battle Mode" at the main menu, something the original release lacks.

I loved that Animal Crossing was one of them, the game was small enough to load into the systems memory and you could take the game out and it would still be playing. I didn't need the feature though.

I am sad to say that Mario Kart Wii does not support this online. I didn't really expect it to, but had to try. I was able to get the game to load, connect online, and let me swap out all the Friend Codes with one another, but it freaked out, asking for the disc after the kart selection screen.
Guess I'll need to get more copies of Mario Kart...

Okay, it took awhile to get this to work. You know how Wii-mails don't send instantly? Guh. I got two to light up the first time, then waited forever and the third would not light up. So, I kicked two of 'em back on and sent messages to each other again. Then, the other one lit up... waited forever and ever for the third to light up... finally did.
That's (obviously) an earlier photo. The TV in the center is a loaner, but the pic lets you see the fifth GameCube (top left, beside the small TV - it's got a mobile monitor attached to it). The only thing that's changed since this (aside from returning the loaner TV) is the addition of the Red Wii.
After Christmas, when my wife opens her present, there'll be a Blu-Ray player there. Eventually, I'd like to replace the Surround Sound system I killed. Makes me sad - it was a five disc changer. Not sure what happened, I was re-arranging everything and when I tried to turn it on, it was dead. :(

too much juice? are all those plugged in? if they are you need more power
Title: Re: Wii Three Kings
Post by: UncleBob on December 21, 2010, 09:35:13 PM
They are all plugged in - to two different sets of outlets (on two different circuits). The various components are plugged in strategically, so items that are often on (or always draw power) are spread out and items that are unlikely to be on at the same time are in the same surge protector (i.e.: it's unlikely both NES units and both SNES units are going to be on all at the same time - or that any two of them will be on at the same time... thus, they're all in the same surge protector).
None of this stuff, alone, draws that much power. Granted, if I cranked it all on at once, well... it'd be glorious, then it'd be silent.

Why does the light on the top Wii seem dimmer than the bottom two?
