I guess they figured they would have to release since there is another company coming out with one for their assecory and they wouldn't get as much money as they would get if they had one them selves.

I knew someone made an SD adapter thread but when I search for it, nothing came up.

more speculation: Quiter thinks that Final Fantasy CC may use the SD adapter because it will be release on the same day (July 18).

I heard on gamepro that it will only work on games that support it and most likely won't be used for regular game saves. So I guess that means I can forget about using it on my old games for regular saves. It would have been nice for games like pso and sports games.

I hope that it means that we might get Earthbound on GameCube.

Why would Earthbound need an SD card?

The SD cards on GameCube are roughly the equivalent of the 64DD and all it's aims and purposes.  Earthbound 64 was originally intended to use all the power of the 64DD, and create a dynamic adventure that would constantly change as you played the game.  The SD cards allow for that ability.

"Quiter thinks that Final Fantasy CC may use the SD adapter because it will be release on the same day"

I severely doubt it. I think Nintendo's reason for releasing the SD adaptor the same day FFCC in Japan is becuase they expect a lot of new Gamecube owners and hope they'll pick up an SD adaptor along with it.

So what exactly does this SD do?
Title: SD Adapter
Post by: rpglover on April 30, 2003, 10:40:02 AM
the sd just allows for more storage space for saving games and stuff like that
its been said that you could probably email game data to the sd cards and save the files to it
it is just a reasonably cheap alternative to regular memory cards that offer way more space than the normal ones

The game has to be programmed to use the SD Adapter. So it looks like you can't save from old games.

looks like I could be right that it might not be intended as a large memory card.    I am hoping to see something really special from the SD cards.

maybe in the next mario creator game if it takes advantage of the sd card will allow you to make games....

You will be able to use it as a memory card for those games that allow its use, also it can be used for ripping your own music into games, expanded levels for multiplayer action, more content for online games (patchs....), Animal Crossing 2 will be the first game to use it.

Um...No one mentioned anything about Animal Crossing 2. Animal Crossing e+ is simply the American version of AC which will soon be released in Japan. The American version has more features like E-reader support...
Although AC2 will probably use it too...but Nintendo has never mentioned anything about AC2. Stop being confused..

July 18!?  Why.. why that's my birthday!  Yay!!  *feels special*

There are many many possibilities with an SD card.  I think it will mostly have to do with media and not save games.  Like being able to make your own faces for game characters, signs, clothes, umbrellas, whatever in AC e+, or even music.. I think it would be sweet to create a midi file to make songs for the town theme in AC b/c it was pretty crappy using the system they gave you and the notes were limited.  Creatively speaking media would be the reason for that card and I think that is what Nintendo would be aiming at.  Let's just see what happens, kay?

Your Forum Avatar is too large ... please choose another one.  Thanks.

Hee hee sorry.  I like the that avatar that says I don't think the rules apply to me.  Good stuff!  Problem solved.  I saw people with much larger avatars than me so I thought it would be cool to use a larger avatar too.  Oh.. geez as for update yeah I meant AC2 not AC e+ which I was careless in reading above posts that its just Animal Forest with E-reader support.  Man I was all excited that AC2 would be coming out on my B-day too.  Oh well lots of stuff during the summer comes out on my B-day but its mostly movies.  I can't ever remember it being a video game despite it being in Japan.

i know the reason people don't think this could be used as a 'normal' memory card is cause of the stupid file count limit inherent in the GCN.  Theoretically though, wouldn't it be possible to put software on the sd, format it if you will, so that it could act as multiple memory cards.  So that you would then have to pick which virtual memory card on the sd card you wanted for a particular game?

Also, do you think nintendo is going to package an sd with the adaptor?  seldomly does one find a store that would sell both a nintendo accessory and sd cards unless its like a comp usa.

The file count limit has nothing to do with it. Nintendo says a game has to be specifically programmed to be able to save in SD card format...

heres hwoi the sd card would work...on the memory card menu it would appear as SD File...one game. Essentuially it would be like a zip file(not compressed, but you nkow like a package) with tons of gamefiles withinside it.I wouldnt doubt all future games will support sd in some form.

Post by: Gamefreak on May 02, 2003, 08:24:32 PM
Well that's a good idea, but that's not how it might actually work though....Or, if you have an SD adaptor inserted, it might change the cube's main menu system a little...

the very fact that theres a game file limit may mean the file system is very static and that may be the only way to do it. Although i said would instead of could.

Nintendo could always release or bundle Save Management software that let you archive saves into the SD format, that wouldn't be limited by the save format block limit, but it would be tedious to boot up and repeatedly swap save files back onto another card (or even into an "Active" area where the SD Card acts like a memory card), then reboot for what game you wanted.
