Title: Heroes On The Move (PS3)
Post by: brian577 on August 24, 2010, 12:46:49 AM
I noticed that Nihilistic software is making a game for the PS3 called Heroes on the Move that will put Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper and Jak and Daxter in the same game which are all owned by different companies. Yet none of them have any involvement in the game in anyway, why would these company's (2 of which are privately owned) allow some developer to use their own characters like this?

Actually, all of those IP's are owned by Sony. Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog are internal Sony studios (so Sony owns IPs they make). Insomniac Games may be independent, but Sony owns the Ratchet & Clank IP (not Insomniac). So it's not that difficult. Sony is publishing the game too, so it's most likely that Sony asked them to make the game (Sony owns the IPs, so they didn't need permission from anyone).
So bottom line, Sony is publishing a game featuring all characters that they own.

It's not all that different from the recent Sega All-Star games, or even Super Smash Bros.
Why doesn't this "Heroes on the Move" have Sackboy?!

I'm guessing it's because he is considered a different kind of hero. Plus all the characters in HotM were created during the PS2 era. Don't know why that would matter, but it's another bullet point.

I honestly don't understand the point of Sony putting out Heroes on the Move and this new Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. They seem to cover the same ground, including using some of the same characters.

Sony's used to retreading old ground? :P

Because getting a new Ratchet & Clank out every year seems to be a Sony requirement or something?

Gotta milk those annualized IP's!

Actually, this is probably being done more for the sake of pushing Move than anything else. Sony is retreading new territory, sure, but its being done with Move. So that's the reason I guess...

The new Ratchet & Clank is also a Move game, though. :-\

I wonder if this will help Move, or if it will hurt the games... because Move costs $100 extra, so fewer people are going to have it which means fewer potential consumers for games like this. But you have to start somewhere, I suppose. So Sony must push out the games at a loss now so that maybe someday Move will be a success. But can it succeed, though?

It depends on if the game requires PlayStation Move. If it doesn't (games like SOCOM 4 will support it, but not require it) then I think the game could do well. I don't see Move being as successful as Sony hope though, not considering how expensive it is to get a complete controller (especially games that require two Move controllers for one player).

I see similar problems to what happens with Wii. Supporting both traditional and motion based control schemes causes one or the other or even both to suffer. One always gets neglected for the other or a developer tries to include both and neither is a top contender.
