Title: Making a GIF, how do I do it?
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on July 18, 2010, 05:20:44 PM
I'm trying to capture video from the internet and use that to make a GIF. What programs should I use to make this possible?
I'm trying to steal a couple of frames from a youtube video to edit into a gif. Please help!?
[applaud] for the first person to give me a working solution to my problem.

Well, you could take a screen shot of each frame, crop the shots in Paint or Picasa, then upload to Picasion, which will then create an animated gif. Or you could post the screen shots and someone (or I) could create the gif in Adobe ImageReady.

Basically what I was doing was taking a gif and using GIMP to cut out the extra frames that I don't need so that I can make a custom spray for L4D2.
If I could capture just a few seconds of the youtube video and play with the frames in GIMP it makes it easy to see which of th 2 or 3 frames I need for my very small animation.
If I rip the video straight from youtube, what could I use to make a gif out of it. I went to Gifsoup but they have that stupid watermark. and while I'm at it, what do I use to rip a youtube video? I think there are Chrome/Firefox addons that do it, but I thought I would ask anyway.

microsoft gf animator is really easy to use, then there is photoshop which isn't as easy
I actually ripped the youtube video already, now I have to figure out how to edit an mp4 down to 2-3 seconds of the video and then convert that into the gif.

Super C (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html) works great at converting video. Microsoft Movie Maker has been great for me with editing movies.

I like how unhelpful ThePerm's posts are. Also his gifs are stupid.
I have used a program that I got from here: http://www.evanolds.com/movtogifsimple.html
It supports MPEG, AVI and WMV files. You can also edit down the movie file you want to use. I'm not sure it's the best out there, but it's easy. Most of the time I then use Photoshop to make it into a suitable size for avatars or things.

I actually figured it out on my own yesterday(applauds were given to those that actually tried to help) and put it all together in about an hour or 2 as I'm still learning how to use GIMP.
Here are the programs I used and it was very quick and easy: 1 Click YouTube Downloader (Firefox ext.) -which let me save the 1080p version of the video in 1 click and only took seconds to d/l
Avidemux -which let me cut the video down to the size I wanted and then save it in individual frames so I could whittle it down further
GIMP -which let me put the frames I needed back together, crop, resize and add text to save them as individual frames again.
VFTEdit -Which let me save the file as a .vft so I could use it in my game (must be 256x256 and 120kb or less)
But here is my finished result for the project I was working on (in .gif format even though tinypic say .jpg)
