Title: How many other people here have had DS hardware issues?
Post by: NWR_insanolord on July 08, 2010, 08:29:10 PM
Because I've had 5 separate units fail on me in 5 separate ways.

My launch DS Phat's touch screen stopped responding; my first DS Lite's hinge broke completely off; the top screen of my second DS Lite cracked. My DSi's R button quit working recently, but this time it was still under warranty and I sent it back to Nintendo for repair. In the meantime, I've gone back to playing my third DS Lite, which has developed an issue with the touch screen in the few days since I began using it again.

I know Nintendo has a reputation for really good hardware quality, but it's hard to feel that way with a history like that.

You must be in the extreme minority as I have never heard of anyone having as many problems as you have.

As for me, i've never had any problems with the actual systems (unless you count the ink on the original DS wearing out, likely from the oil on my hands).

I didn't have any technical issues with mine, but then again, I had it maybe three months before selling it.

I had a hinge issue on one (replaced under warranty) and the backup's screens are a little off-color but not enough to be distracting.

My Lite fell from my dorm bunk bed one morning and got the infamous 'hairline crack' because of it but none of my systems have had issues worse than that.

In fact, the only systems I've had fail on my are my original NES (might still be saved) and the old Brick which got it's battery compartment corroded and stopped working 2 decades after I first got it. All other systems, handheld or console, still function besides those two.

Bought a DS (Phat) at launch, and it stills works just as good as ever after all these years.

1. DS Phat was cool until I sold it to a friend whose kids caused its hinges to crack.  I sold it to him after 2 years of owning it.

2. DS Lite #1 had the hairline crack that turned into a big crack.

3. DS Lite #2 also had the hairline crack along with 2 dead pixels

4. DS Lite #3 has nothing wrong with it

5. DSi has a non-working R button.

No problems with Phat which was stolen, and none with my lite now.

I've got a Phat, Lite, and I and they are all perfectly functional.  My Lite has the standard little cracks on the hing though.

My lite also had the standard cracks on the hinges as does my wife's lite.  Nothing else wrong though and had those since the US launch of the lite.

All the nintendo hardware I have personally owned are still perfectly functional.

My sister's lite however has 2 issues, the same old hinge issues and the bottom of her touch screen has be come unresponsive.

The hinge issue?  Didn't realize other people ran into that as well, was able to make a "duct tape patch" for my DS by placing plastic spacers between the two hinges--looks like crap but it fixed the issue :0.

My DS Phat still works, 2nd owner because I bought it used.

Given all the DS problems I've had, it's surprising that only one of the three DS Lites I've had had cracks on the hinge. Of course, on the one of them that did have that problem, the cracked hinge eventually completely broke off, severing the wires inside, resulting in the only one of the five that was rendered completely unplayable.

My DS Lite:
1. Cracked hinge
2. Broken L button
3. The middle of the touchscreen is not accurate

My DS Phat:
1. Nothing.

I completely agree that the DS Lite is not up to the usual Nintendo hardware quality.  I have never had a piece of Nintendo hardware fail on me EVER until the DS Lite.

My touch screen doesn't register taps on the far, far right very well, but that's really it.  I've dropped it several times, and as a result, the power slider doesn't work right, but that's no big deal, and definitely my fault.

I don't have this broken hinge problem on my DS Lite.

My touch screen is nowhere near as sensitive as it was when I bought it brand new... and I'm not rough with the thing at all.

I'm guessing you never owned an original NES.  I always had to blow on the cart and inside, shift the cart around in the system and everything before it would play a game.  That was shortly after getting the system.  Every time it didn't turn on the first time was technically a failure.  What was nice though was that it lasted 10 years before dying.  My N64 still works and my SNES mostly works.

My launch DS Phat worked up until I bought a DSi. It might still work if I could find the charger. The only problem it ever had was the time I broke the hinge on the right side.
No problems on the DSi.

I had a DS lite at launch.  It had the hairline crack for years until last week the crack started to get larger.  I brought my DS into a shop befeore it broke and they replaced the entire outside of my system.  I didn't even know they could do that, it cost about 20 bucks and now I have a black DS.
If you have an L or R button that doesn't work go back to your NES childhood and blow on it.  I had the same problem with my old case and this fixed the problem for me.  Dust or somethinge can apparently easily get into the contact area.
I've never heard of touchscreens losing their sensitivity before though, did you guys recalibrate in the menu?

Now my R button doesn't work.  Blowing into the button is a pretty good temporary solution but if it works anything like blowing on a cartridge it will only further damage the contacts over time.  Oh well, between my phat and my lite I'll be able to last until the 3DS comes out.

Great.. upon further play of Dragon Quest... I'm noticing my D-pad's left directional sensor isn't working as well anymore.  This is kinda making it a bit annoying to move my character around and such.  Should I make the splurge and just get a DSi XL now? I have really been wanting one... but the 3DS is so close, though... hmmm...

Just use your stylus. Saves you some money to buy the 3DS.

If you really can't wait, just get a used DS phat, you can get one for like $80.

I don't know what used Lites are going for, but it can't be enough more than that to make you willing to go back to the monstrosity that is the Phat. If I were you, I'd hold off on buying anything for a month to see what the release date for the 3DS is. You don't want to spend even $80 and then find out the 3DS is coming in November.

The phat was fine. It is not as good as the DSi, but it is more than good enough. DS Lites's go for about $10-20 more than original DS's.

Decided to throw this out there but the R button on my DSi seems to have broken recently.  I can still press it but nothing seems to happen. I really got to dig in and press the sh*t out of it just get something to happen, if anything.  I'm lucky though that DQ9 doesn't really require the R button so I haven't been pressed to get it fixed.  I don't think I'll want to go and pay the repair fee for this though given the 3ds should be coming soon enough.

Mine did that; it's the reason I sent it back to Nintendo. Seems to be a somewhat common problem with DSis.

I don't know about that, this is the first time i've heard anyone have a problem like that.

That was at least the third time in this thread that someone mentioned it, and I've heard it other places.

Dam, didn't know that dam R button was this big of an issue.  Its strange that this seems to only happen to the R and not the L.  I figured they were both basically the same.  Oh, thanks to whoever it was that said to blow into the button.  I'm surprised that actually worked lol.  That would've never crossed my mind lol.

Speaking of DS issues, I just remembered the other day of another issue I had at one point with my DSi.  I haven't seen it posted here but I've ran across it through the internet when I first ran into it.  I also got a work around for it (only worked for me so I'm not sure how successful it'll be with others).

Well basically, one day, right out of the blue with no warning to speak of, I turned my DSi on and got a pure white screen on the bottom and an error code on the top screen.  At first I thought it glitched out so I just reset it but still received the same problem.  I looked it up online and the only solution I found was that I had to send it in to Nintendo for repair.  Now if this happens to anyone else, try this before sending it out.  I basically turned on the DS to receive the error message and then just left it on till the battery died out.  I didn't leave the system open as I didn't know if having the pure white screen displayed for a couple of hours would damage the lcd.  I closed the DS and left it in sleep mode till the power went out.  After that, I charged the DS to full strength and then turned it back on.  To make a long story short, it worked.  I don't know if letting the battery die out reset whatever was giving me the error but it worked.

Hopefully none of you will have this problem but if you do, hopefully my technique will solve it for you.

Allow me to be the first then.

1. DS Phat - 2 dead pixels from the moment I turned it on (returned it right away)
2. DS Phat - 1 dead pixel (lived with it until I gave it to my ex)
3. DS Lite - L button stopped working recently

The R button on my Phat broke.  I now no longer own a DS with two functioning shoulder buttons.  Am I doing something wrong?  Are my fingers just naturally SUPER STRONG?

I wouldn't by an XL, it'll ruin your 3DS experience because the screens will be tiny :P

My DS Phat was stolen years ago and every DS I've ever owned has had to be sent back for repairs. Including my launch DSi. It's always the same thing too, the R button dies on me.

My original DS's touch screen stopped working (while playing Wario Ware Touched! too).  My DSi's right shoulder button flaked out on me as well (blowing into it seemed to temporarily fix it, but it'd stop working again).

Kinda off I haven't experienced the R-button issue at all and I'm a lefty so I play many games holding the system with my right hand in a way that has me resting my finger on the button for support.
