Title: So I got a PS3, now what?
Post by: BranDonk Kong on July 01, 2010, 08:54:25 PM
I traded a dude a JTAG'ed Xbox 360 for a PS3 (60GB, backwards compatible). The bracket that holds the fan on the bottom got bent inwards in shipping and I had to take it apart and fix that...so now I have a 60GB PS3 and no clue as to what I should look for as far as decent games. I know Uncharted 2 is awesome, and I liked God of War on PSP (even though it's repetitive as Hell)...what else is "must have?" - I do plan on buying Mortal Kombat 2 ASAP as well.

Get/rent/borrow some blu-ray movies, tv shows, etc.

You should immediately go out and buy a 60" 3DTV with 4 pairs of glasses so that other people can watch you play you games in Real3D.

Definitely get PixelJunk Shooter. The PS3's got a great lineup, but that's still my favorite game on the system.

Time for that age old question again: "Well, what kind of games do you like?"  On top of that, what games did you buy on 360 so we don't have to recommend multiplatform games you already bought.

If you like RPGs, White Knight Chronicles is pretty good. Voice acting is terrible, but the gameplay and story are fun.

I don't have enough time for RPGs or "epic" games. It's hard to say what games I'm into...I like Call of Duty, but I'm not a huge FPS fan in general. 3D Dot Heroes interests me, and LBP somewhat. I'm a Nintendo fan first, so it's hard for me to decide what to play on other consoles sometimes, I guess I'm just interested in exclusives, since if there's a game that I like that's also on 360, I probably already have it. I'll probably rent some when I get back from vacation.

After reading that, I really have to wonder why you bought a PS3.  Some of its best games are RPGs and "epic" games.

Fine then.  Infamous, Batman: Arkham Aslym (if you don't own it already on 360), Split/Second, Flower, Shatter, Trine, Uncharted 2, Alone in the Dark (PS3), Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time.

Burnout Paradise for the sheer insanity of content.

SUPER STARDUST HD! If there's a demo, try it, now.

To go along with what broodwars said...

Uncharted 2 and Infamous are definite buys. Both of those games are amazing to no end.

I have yet to play it, but I've heard that Prototype is really fun, too.

Edit:  Oh, also.. I have a nephew who goes ecstatic over Everyday Shooter.  I believe it's a PSN exclusive download game.  Take that for what it is. :)

Prototype is fun, yeah.

I like the R&C games myself. God of War 3 is great, and so is the God of War Collection (it's cheap now). People whine about it, but RE5 is fantastic. If you get it, we can play together with online co-op!

Already have it for Xbox 360.

Out of all the PixelJunk games, Shooter is easily the best one out of all of them.

For PS3 games, Infamous, without a doubt.

I have RE5 Gold, will that work? I hate my Com-Controlled partner with an absolute passion. (and how is the bluetooth headset?)

I saw the trailer for Infamous 2 on GTTV last night, it looked pretty cool.

Yeah, that Infamous 2 gameplay footage was awesome. I'm anticipating the sequel a lot more than I was now because I didn't think the first game was that great. It had potential though, and it shows in the sequel.

What HE said, plus Joe Danger it's a PSN Download. Super SFIV is a personal fav. The original Uncharted is worthy as well. You might wanna be careful of LittleBigPlanet if you have played MarioG2, the only similarity is platforming but...... platforming, cool game though........ platforming.

Other advice, get a new HD. It'll handle a 500GB but the PS3 you have is a early model so I wouldn't go there, a 250G laptop HD is good enough. It can also play almost any format of video that you can put on a thumb drive unlike the 360, so watch all your pirated media on your big screen.... not that your a pirate(ARRRRR!).

It also sucks in a lot of dust in the front vents of the console so vacuum that succa out once in a while. Prepare for madd firmware updates for the console and even for launch titles, yeah Day 1 patches............ aaaaand there slow.

Yeah I updated from 3.30 to 3.40 and it took FOREVER. I have thought about getting a new HDD, it can hold up to 9.5mm thick HDD's so I could probably put a 750GB drive in, especially if I want to turn this into my Media Center (and get rid of the computer in my living room). Dust is never really an issue in my house, so I'm not too concerned about that.

Yay, now I know what to do! Wait for some PS Jailbreak clones to be released and buy one of them.

Does anyone remember that PS2 memoory card adapter that plugged into th USB of the PS3 and allowed PS2 saves to be transfered into the internal memory of the PS3? If so, what exactly is the point of the device? Also, let's assume hypothetically that I were to transefer my saves to the PS3 and the PS3 could emulate PS2 games, would it be possible to use these saves for my emulated PS2 games?

Yeah, I have that adapter and it worked very nicely.  The "point" of it is to allow you to transfer your PS2 saves to a 60 or 80 GB backwards-compatible PS3 so you can continue your progress there.  It works nicely, and you can continue your progress with it provided you have the right PS3 and the downloadable PS2 save file software (you can get that off the PSN).

Let's say that PS2 emulation happens on the PS3 and I bought a copy of Final Fantasy 12 off of PSN, is it reasonable to assume that I could use my old save file on the game that I down loaded?

It depends on how it's implemented.  Right now, any PS1 game saves you bring over from a PS1 memory card will be fully functional with any PS1 PSN titles.  All Sony did was put the ROM up there, so it still looks for and creates PS1 memory files on a "virtual memory card" that you tell the PS3 to create.  If the PS2 emulation (which is probably coming) does something similar, it's likely you could use your old PS2 files.  However, right now the trend is towards either PS3 collections or quasi-remakes on PSN (Beyond Good & Evil).

As someone who pays way too much money for NHL Gamecenter Live so I can watch my beloved Flyers, I'm ecstatic that I'm now able to watch it on my PS3. I always wanted to be able to watch them on TV, but being a college student and splitting my time between different residences during the hockey season made the Center Ice cable package impossible, forcing me to the online viewing. Sony was already the clear choice as a media player, this just makes it even better.
