So, hot topic of discussion right now - you get seven days to vote. You can change your vote. When it launches, we'll dig this thread back up and see how close we were.

January 2011 is my guess. Pokemon Black and White will likely be in America in March and this will give players time to grab the 3DS before launch of Black and White.

March 2011. Or later, depending on supply constraints of the display.

I'm expecting the system to sell out in Japan. For months. This might delay the American launch, past March'11.
But if Sony somehow releases the rumoured PSP2 first quarter 2011, then NoA will be forced to launch.
Although the fact Americans have experienced the system already as opposed to the Japanese (who I assume haven't), this may entice NoA to get it out here much sooner.
Too many variables.
But my guess goes to March 2011.

It's a tough call, really. I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo pushed it out for the holiday season. But I decided on March, since I think Nintendo will want to make sure they have a solid launch line up.

I'm going with March too. If there aren't enough launch games (which I doubt) a new Pokemon game with optional 3D will be there.

Holiday 2010 to combat Waanabwii's.
3DS is gonna take the attention of the casual and the core.

I don't think they are going to make their goal.
Mostly because I think they would be pretty dumb not to launch this thing at Christmas time and there is no way it's going to be ready for this Christmas.

Seriously? With what they showed there, it looked like a variety of games were nearly completed. Maybe not so many 3rd party titles, but some of Nintendo's games looked almost ready to go. I say the third Sunday in November.

Back at GDC devs were saying that they were supposed to target game completion for release this year.
I'm sure they will have plenty of games ready for launch including the 3DSware Retro Upgrades.

I am going to bet and place the 3DS launch in November 2010. The anniversary of the official release of the DS brand in America. I see Nintendo releasing their new tech to reinforce the wii against the Kinect and Sony's Move.

Has anyone actually published the prospective list Nintendo has up on their press kit for 3DS titles? It's long, I took a look at it for the first time today.

The more I think about it, the more certain I am that it's coming this year. The 3DS would do a lot better in sales launching in the 4th quarter than in the 1st, and I don't think it would have any real effect on DS sales. Most of the people who would buy a DS this holiday season will do so regardless of whether or not the 3DS is there; there isn't much overlap between people who waited 6 years to buy a DS and people who will buy a 3DS at launch.
The 3DS will launch on November 21st, 2010. It was mentioned on RFN, and I saw the pattern prior to that: Nintendo launches hardware the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The GameCube, DS, and Wii all launched on that day, and I don't see any reason that will change. It also has the side benefit of being 6 years to the day after the launch of the original DS.

I don't see it coming out this year, the DS is still selling way to good. March 2011 is when I see a worldwide launch.

The DS will sell really well whether the 3DS is out or not. The 3DS, on the other hand, would sell a lot better if it comes out late this year than if it comes out early next year.

I think it's a safe bet that at least 80% of those will not be at launch.
Title: Re: Place Yer Bets: 3DS US Launch Month

That's the point. There is a metric ton of titles on the way and since GDC devs have been making games with Holiday 2010 release in mind. Assuming 80% of those don't ship during the holidays, there are still plenty of titles to trickle out over the following months with more to be revealed & released between Jan 2011 and E3 2011.

Going to go with Nov 2010. I just have a feeling they will want to put a stop to whatever Sony and Microsoft are trying to do with their new control methods. The 3DS launch will dominate the gaming industry for months after the release. Things will sell out and we'll have lines for the system the same way there was some for the Wii. It gives them a chance to basically "relaunch" the Wii as well with new colors and their holiday games.

completely different system so they should be tracked separately.
Title: Re: Place Yer Bets: 3DS US Launch Month

The DSi is different. It has games that cannot be played on the DS. DS, DSi and 3DS all can play DS games. So why isn't the DSi tracked separately?
Title: Re: Place Yer Bets: 3DS US Launch Month
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on June 24, 2010, 05:39:07 PM
The DSi is a DS, let's not complicate the situation.
The DSi is the DS as the GBC was to the GB
The 3DS is to the DS as the SNES was to the NES It's the next generation and not a minor upgrade within the same generation.

Except the Game Boy Color was considered a successor by all, replaced the Game Boy, had increased specs, and featured all-new games instead of just adding an online shop (with games that would be possible on the regular DS if it were capable of having the shop added to it).
The DSi is akin to the Game Boy Pocket.
3DS is the next generation and will be tracked separately.

I voted February as well. I believe this year is just too soon...and the market is already filled. Wait until Tokyo Game Show for the full update, and information. Though, I could see Nintendo having a surprise launch in Japan...but everywhere else next year is good...and it gives Nintendo an entire year to those units cracked out and supplies high for the holiday madness for the system.

I dint remember exactly which ones, but I know I've seen developers say that the games they made wouldn't have worked without the extra horsepower of the DSi.

Even if true, it doesn't change the fact that the DSi is a hardware revision, not a successor. But I doubt they're any different, it probably just made them easier to program.
Title: Re: Place Yer Bets: 3DS US Launch Month

I'm not arguing that the DSi isn't just a revision; I'm arguing that the GBC was.

Nintendo officially declared the Game Boy Color a successor and replaced the Game Boy with it. The DSi did not replace the DS. In the official videogame history timeline, the Game Boy is a part of the third generation and the Game Boy Color is the fourth generation. The DS and DSi are both the seventh generation. I s'pose you can consider them whatever you want, but it isn't what it is officially.
Is the Wii a GameCube revision? Is the PS2 a PlayStation revision? They're similar in concept to the Game Boy Color.

Hmm, what I see is that the DS still seems hugely popular, is getting a massive push in stores, lots of new colors (this is in Japan), and of course the LL, tons of games, and just generally seems very "active."
It doesn't feel like a system which is being readied for phase-out, and I imagine they want to get at least one more holiday season out of it (at this point I'm assuming it's practically pure profit), and game devs probably feel the same way.
That's why I'd put any 3DS release in mid-2011, if not later, at least in Japan.
Title: Re: Place Yer Bets: 3DS US Launch Month
Post by: TJ Spyke on June 29, 2010, 11:46:59 AM
The DS has always been profit for Nintendo, Nintendo never charges less than it costs to make the system (this way they always make a profit, even at launch).

Nintendo wants to HYPE up the current DS to get people paying attention and extra HYPED for the 3DS.
There is nothing better for an upsale than to get you ready to drop coin for the current product, then show you the much MUCH better product for only a little bit more.
You love the DSi XL with Xfeatures and Xgames at $150? well check out the 3DS with 5xfeatures and all those same Xgames and XYZgames too for ontly the price of a single game more! only the price of a single game more!!!.... and we'll even throw in a free game!!
The 3DS would sellout with ease anywhere it launched this year, especially if Nintendo can ramp up interest in the current DS line before hand.
