Title: Zelda: Oracle of Seasons? Death Toll? -or- which game has killed you the most?
Post by: Sea Dragon on April 28, 2003, 06:30:26 AM
Hi everyone;

I'm going through Metroid Prime now, but my girlfriend and I just finished Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons. We were going to start in on Ages, but it was just a bit too similar - needed a break for something different for a bit.

Anyway, I thought I'd see how many times you guys died beating Oracle of Seasons; I don't know if it was really tough, or if we were just pretty poor players. We died a total of 136 times. Whatever the case, it was a lot of fun. We may try Link's Awakening DX after we finish Prime.

Is there anyone in Prime to figure out how many times you have died? So far we're 04% of the way through the game with 2:42 showing on the clock... I have the feeling this is going to be a long game frought with many deaths!

Which game has caused you to perish the most? Metroid Fusion killed us quite a bit - I think we died about 20 times total just from the savage, hairly-legged blows of that irritating leaping-about spider spinny beast (the one that gives you the screw attack.)

i don't think i died once while playing oracle of seasons or ages.  in fact, while both games were excellent i thought they were both a touch easy.

the game i've died most at recently would have to be mario sunshine.  that game got tricky at times...especially during the levels where you had to make it through the obstacle course w/o your water pack.  other than that, hm...the computer ai in advance wars kicks my ass a lot.

i feel the same way most of the users on this forum do, that games these days are getting much easier than they used to be.  the amount of times i died in mario sunshine doesn't compare to the amount of times i died during mario 3 or super mario world.

Looking back, I've found that most of the times I died in past games were from "cheap shots" like the Meridia boss in Super Metroid (he's either really, really easy with an obscure trick, or amazingly difficult), or weird platform scrolly things and oddly timed jumps (like all of the automatic scroll levels in mario 3/SMW).  So on one hand, I die less in newer games, but the games are also built so that I can avoid dying much easier -- retreating is easier, the puzzles are a bit more forgiving life-wise despite being more complex.

I also think a lot of the easiness comes from a well-fleshed out 3d world, too.  Your options for dodging are pretty slim in 2d, whereas in 3d you have a lot more ways to avoid damage -- if you're good.  If you try to just blast away at Ridley in Metroid Prime, you're gonna go down fast.  Luckily the game builds you up to a level of skill where you figure out how to avoid attacks while delivering the most damage, which, personally, I think makes a game a lot more immersive.

So I don't think the games are exactly easier -- the developers have just gotten better at making good gamers

Nintendo and Konami have both talked about a concious decision to make games easier.. and the others just haven't thought to mention it. Even Treasure seems to be letting up a little. I hope more companies find a way to reach both hardcore and.. er. softcore(?) gamers. Nintendo came close with Mario Sunshine, but Bowser was a real dissappointment after so many of the challenges.

Closer to being on topic... do you get anything in the Oracle games if you beat the game without dying? I've so far only managed that feat in LA and OoT, primarily because I'm lazy and don't replay games much, but that's another subject alltogether.

So far as I know only the first Metroid game keeps a death count, and then only the Famicom Disk version. It's more important how long you take, and in Prime they seem to have forgotton that too. (Not so with the original team, Metroid Fusion has to be finished in less than 2 hours with 100% complete for the best ending. what was I saying about games being too easy? @_@)

it has been speculated that they left the timer out of Prime due to loading reasons.  ya know how sometimes it takes a few seconds for a door to load?  that's because the other room isn't loaded yet...
