Title: E3 2010 Day 2 - Nintendo Press Conference Thread
Post by: broodwars on June 14, 2010, 10:35:24 PM
I know this thread is early, but I thought I'd get this prepared for tomorrow so I'm not rushing to get it done in the morning. Yes, tomorrow, June 15th, is the day we've all been waiting for: Nintendo's E3 2010 Press Conference, slated to run for 2 hours starting at 12:00 PM EST (9:00 AM PST).
I'll update this post with other Live Streams as they are posted here. Looking forward to the discussion as we catch our first glimpses of gaming's future. (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif) Here's hoping we have a great show, or at least one dramatically better than the Microsoft and Ubisoft ones we saw today. ;)

I will be writing an exam on mathematical methods, at 1:30 est... Is there any site that will host a recording of the conference, after the fact?
If Gametrailers' coverage of the 3 conferences today is any indication, you'll be able to watch Nintendo's conference from the link I provided. They seem to be using the Live Stream screens as their archival pages as well.

Why is this in General Gaming and not Nintendo Console Discussion?

The other threads of this type are here, and I think it makes more sense to keep them together.

Exactly. Originally, I had all the Press Conferences in one thread, but a moderator requested I split them up to avoid confusion. So 1 became 3: 1 for Microsoft, EA, and Ubisoft; 1 for Nintendo; and 1 for Sony. It just made sense to keep the three in the same area, especially since the main Nintendo Discussion section is going to be flooded with new topics.
Besides, if the Nintendo Press Conference has Wii and handheld news, it wouldn't make sense to put the thread in "Nintendo Console Discussion" now would it? ;)

We need to consolidate chats. Between the forums, the chatango, the IRC and the AIM/MSN chats, Twitter and my cell, I'm too spread out.
Tomorrow, we need to try to consolidate so that I can focus on the actual press conference...

Supposedly Charles Martinet did voicework for a new Mario game that isn't New Super Mario Brothers Wii or Super Mario Galaxy 2. Might there me a new Mario game at the show? If the voicework was already done way back in October then the game must've been near the end of the development cycle. This makes me wonder if there could be a Mario game ready for the launch of the 3DS, but I'm hoping it is for Wii.

I'm not feeling another main-line Mario game in the Wii's lifecycle, so maybe it was for a Mario Sports-type title? Now, a 3DS Mario title is very much possible.

That's actually what I'm hoping for. I enjoy the spin-offs more than the main games. I've put more time into Mario Super Sluggers than I have Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, and New Super Mario Brothers Wii combined.

That's the thing with games like the main-Mario games - You play them once and you're generally done. The spin-offs, you play over and over again.

Ugh...Miyamoto...that Shield Bash didn't exactly work well in Twilight Princess. The Nunchuck just isn't sensitive enough to be used like this very well.

Leave it to Nintendo to find the common ground between cartoony and realistic Zelda. :) Now THIS looks like Zelda. And neither group of fans can argue about it.
Though the game looks like tedious motion control to the max. So close... yet so far.

You know when the guy WHO MADE THE DAMN GAME seems incapable of demoing the thing correctly maybe you should go with a different approach. Just give me a classic controller support already. The more this demo goes on the worse this looks. Too bad because it graphically looks so nice.

So, everyone's impression of this shorter-than-expected Press Conference? I thought it was good overall (especially after yesterday), though the technical problems with Zelda and the lack of information about that game's structure bother me. I would have liked to see actual Metroid Other M gameplay footage up on stage as well. The 3DS section was surprisingly unimpressive, though a new Kid Icarus was cool. And it's going to take a long time for me to get over Retro, the artistic wizards of the Metroid Prime series, reduced to working on a new Donkey Kong Country.

I'm a bit disappointed overall. I was hoping for more Mario games, at least something released this year. And I think the 3DS is lame, and couldn't care less. But that's mostly because I don't like portables.

I thought it was a good conference, though I've only been reading the Liveblog. Zelda sounds kind of wonky. I'm excited about the Kirby game (especially after seeing some screenshots), and a little underwhelmed by the DK Country Returns and Goldeneye announcements. I wish Retro was given the green light to do their own thing, but oh well.
More focus on Other M would've been nice, and the 3DS, too. I KNEW it was going to be another DS "skew," not something completely different. I look forward to my colleagues' impressions from the show floor.

What they showed of Other M was awesome though. Lots of new areas, less emphasis on the story, shows that it still has the exploratory element as a main game play idea.

Probably the big disappointment for me was confirmation that Zelda was being pushed back to next year. Yeah, I was already certain it would be, but just seeing it stated outright made me sad. I really wish Retro had been allowed to actually create a new IP for Nintendo rather than be shackled to Donkey Kong.
EDIT: Plus, replacing Zelda with Kirby and Donkey Kong is such an obvious step-down it's disheartening. Definitely nothing for me from Nintendo this Fall.

Well, I think the 3DS is really awesome, because we've never seen anything like it, and it must be pretty impressive to be drawing all this third-party support so quickly. However, video games are an inside activity, and if I'm inside, I have a TV.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea (especially given the technical problems we were seeing) that it was delayed, just that it disappoints me. With Zelda pushed back, there's nothing for me this Fall on Wii aside from Epic Mickey (which looks awesome).

I could have sworn that Iwata said earlier this year that Zelda was releasing this year, even if Reggie then immediately contradicted him and gave the old "we'll release it when it's ready" line.

There's good stuff here but is very clear that Nintendo and I are no longer on the same page. Nintendo may still make games I enjoy, but they have no idea about what gets me excited. They're all about sequels and franchises and motion control. They don't realize how underwhelming it is for me to find out Retro is just working on Donkey Kong or that Zelda may in fact control like complete piss. What to expect from Nintendo these days is franchises and quirky controls. That's it, that's Nintendo. And that's super lame to me.
This isn't a bad E3 lineup I suppose but it just lacks excitement for me personally. Nintendo is strictly formula and I'm not interested in that.

Zelda really wouldn't matter though since it's 2011 (and I'm guessing late 2011) so I doubt Pikmin 3 is going come anytime this year. Nice to see DK return and new Kirby game (nintendo's dissing alot of love to platformers this genertaion compare to the GC era). Overall, the big news like 3DS was leaked months ago and Zelda was ho-hum so for me the star so far is Epic Mickey.

It's obviously Reggie, who happens to be the only Haitian on there, who happens to be discolored and much darker than he's supposed to be (thanks to the rush job) and is speaking in a slightly ghetto fashion.. You just know SOMEONE out there is gonna nitpick the comic because they're overly sensitive.

It's more "stream of consciousness" now, which is fine, and leads to experimentation, but unfortunately it leads to some comics looking great and others looking very loose. This is an example of the latter.

I think I'm just too used to dealing with this **** (was asked to be part of a multicultural diversity program in highschool that lasted much longer than I would've like) that its made me prone to picking out any little thing that might be offensive to anyone ever (Caucasians can say Jack's caricature depicts a stereotypical "nerdy white guy" for instance)
I am reminded of that South Park episode "Camp Of Tolerance".

Yeah, I'm actually surprised in retrospect that we got absolutely nothing in terms of pricing for the 3DS, especially after Microsoft made the same mistake yesterday with Kinect.
Keep in mind that Kinect will launch later this year. 3DS will not.
Also, Kinect is a compliment to the Xbox 360, not a replacement.

Also if 3DS does come out this year, it likely won't be until Nov of this year and Nintendo has no reason to show all of it's cards this early into the game. Sony still hasn't revealed it's next card and Nintendo doesn't want to give them any advantage before they commit to something by showing something
Nintendo will have another event sometime this year that will pull the curtain all the way back.

Just thought I would mention that the Nintendo Channel has more videos up from E3. As far as showing to much of the 3DS I think Nintendo has the advantage in that they didn't reveal the price yet. I think it was 1 or 2 months before the launch of the Wii that they revealed the price. And it undercut the 360 and PS3.
Oh something else I read. The 3DS that was revealed at E3 wasn't the final version so there may be a few differences from what we saw a few days ago.

I don't know where to post this, but I guess Gamespot did an E3 rundown called The Future of Gaming and for some reason it's playing on the west coast right now on channel 2.

Channel 2? You realize that channels are more regional than coasts?
