Title: The James Bond Thread
Post by: Stratos on April 28, 2010, 03:14:28 AM
For everything Bond. And to move Bond discussion out of the rumor thread.

I preferred the older Bond theme songs to the modern   ones. View to a Kill is a personal favorite. My favorite modern one   would be World is not Enough.

I really had to adjust to Connery as Bond because I had only ever seen him in later movies where he was older and it was odd to see him younger.

Dalton and Moore are too low on your list.

Moore was my first bond, For Your Eyes Only to be exact. But going back, the two Moore movies that hold up are Live and Let Die and For Your Eyes Only. Maybe I need to go rewatch some of the films

I could also be associating the actors with the whole film. So if an overall bond movie was very enjoyable then I probably viewed the actor as better. Especially with the ones I've not seen in a while.

I really enjoyed Your Eyes Only.

I'm thinking about going on a bond marathon soon as well. I've got all the films on Netflix queue and plan on bumping them up soon.

Moore easily slams into the bottom of the list with his overly playful performance and general un-bondness. he also felt too old and sluggish. His fights were embrassing. "I kill you!" is funny as hell though.

I respect Lazenby a lot more than Moore even though he has only one movie, especially since it contains some of the same emotional parallels with Casino Royal just decades too early. However, by the same measure I can't rate him any better because he only had one movie.

Craig comes in the middle for leading an amazing revival from Brosnan's terrible Die another Day with Casino Royal, but doing a shitastic job that is Quantum (not that he had much to work with). I laughed so hard when he walked out of the water on the beach.

Brosnan and Dalton are fairly equal for some very different reasons. Brosnan with a fairly 50/50 hit rate with his movies. The excellent GoldenEye and the enjoyable The World is not Enough. Countered with the pointlessness of Tomorrow Never Dies and the sheer mind blowing retardedness of throwing random Bond like elements that comprised Die Another Day leaves only Brosnan's himself to save the day. Brosnan does come with a certain amount of playfulness, but it's more boys with toys, than casual bored indifference Moore brought.

Dalton was an angry Bond, with good reason. His friends keep getting chewed up. Literally. It wasn't Craig's cold blooded, "The bitch is dead", I will chase you to the ends of the earth to hunt you down.

Connery is just plain awesome. his last film was terrible because he was just too old to play Bond by the time he got there, but every one of his first run of Bond films are classics. Connery Bond is the Bond I would want to be if I could be Bond. He is classy, with equally classy women with not so classy names and villains that define super villains with real henchmen.

I love Moore as bond, but i can't say the movies he is in are great.

My favorite Bond style movie is not a Bond movie but a quasiparody called If looks could Kill starring a young Richard Grieco, although i have to admit I haven't seen it since like 97 so it could be way more terrible than my memory dictates.

Also, you people are leaving of David Niven off your list :P

FACT:  When Q died Roger Moore was the only Bond to attend his funeral.  For this reason alone, he is the best Bond.

I have a nit-picky thing against Connery. He's Scottish. Bond is and always has been British.

I'd rather talk about the Bond girls. My favorites? Glad you asked. Lana Wood and Eva Green, no comparisons.

yeah Bond is British, Scottish are British, but they are not English.

England is the south east part of Britain, Scotland is the Northern part of Britain, Wales is the South western part of Britain, Northern Ireland is a seperate Island but isn't a part of Britain, it is however a part of the United Kingdom. Brosnan is Irish not British. Lazenby is Austrailian, Connery is Scottish, Moore is English, and Craig is also English. Pretty much to be Bond you have to be a member of a UK commonwealth state. Mel Gibson who is an American who grew up in Austrailia was rumored to be considered for the part.

here are people who declined the role or didnt get it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_actors_considered_for_the_James_Bond_character
I never really thought about how much Burt Reynolds could be made to looks like Sean Connery

and somebody find me a better picture of Dalton! I can't find a good James bond picture, i was going to use one from a poster where he resembles other Bond actor poses, but whoever made that poster doesn't know how to cut photographs because his head it all cut up and squared and crap. I might make as well make a post bond banner, because some of their post or non Bond roles are way better. favorite bond starring movies that arent bond movies : Hott Fuzz, Boat Trip, Highlander, After the Sunset, Layer Cake.

I've always wanted to make low budget movies that get tacked on in extras, if I were to make a non serious Bond movie I would use Ryan Seacrest, after doing the editing tonight and walking around wal-mart I saw him and he reminded me of Bond in whichever thing he was advertised in.

If i were to do a serious one I would use Jude Law, Clive Owen would be good too.

The Matador is a good non-bond Bond movie too.

Plus I like the Rock even though it's an over the top explosion fest.

Agreed completely.  Usually people name The Spy Who Loved Me as his best, but I don't agree with this.

Also, I think Diamonds are Forever is way underrated.  I don't care how old Connery was, the pants still fit...

I think Moore's portrayal is the most cold-blooded one.  The flippant one-liners showed just how little he valued human life.  The greatest example is probably when he threatened Rosie Carver in Live and Let Die.  She said he couldn't kill her after they'd had sex, and he said he certainly wouldn't have killed her before.

That ain't playful.  That's stone cold.  And that's why I like him.
Title: Re: The James Bond Thread
Post by: oohhboy on April 29, 2010, 12:21:37 PM
Rosie was incompetent beyond measure. It wasn't that he didn't value her as a human being, he had no respect for as agent (good or bad) or as a women, although for Bond not respecting women was a given. It wasn't remotely cold blooded.

Moore's cold blooded moment would be shooting a sniper out of a tree in Moon Raker. He just acts like a smug SOB. Equal to that would be his seduction and apparent lack of care or anything for the illiterate pilot in order to get intel.

Cold blooded would be shooting Electra King although he did show some lingering feeling before diving after the submarine. Not unprecedented as in ThunderBall, he does give his dead contact a moment before moving on.

Really cold blooded would be Bond killing the would be assassin in his bath tube in GoldFinger with an electric fan afterwards quipping "Shocking, simply shocking" while fixing his shirt, then leaving the mess behind.

Craig's stone faced "The bitch is dead" is easily more cold blooded.

Moore was soft, but if nothing else, most of his movies has some excellent stunts. Mid air free fall fight in the beginning of Moon Raker. Barrel rolling a car (fairly pointlessly) in Man with a Golden Gun. The aerial ladder in a View with a Kill.

That doesn't make any sense.  What does her incompetence have to do with anything?  He was suspicious of her from the start, but only confronted her after getting his jollies.  His only motivation was the fact that he wasn't a necrophiliac.  The closest thing to an emotion he showed was lust.  He was downright reptilian.

I think you're confusing cold-bloodedness with ruthlessness.  All the other Bonds had actual feelings behind their most ruthless actions, not counting offing random mooks.  Moore's Bond just plain didn't care.  Largely because Moore himself found the whole thing rather silly, I think.  I'm not saying he's my favorite Bond.  I'm just presenting an alternative character interpretation.

Personally I find the line "...yes, considerably" much more cold blooded. He didn't even let the motherfucker finish his sentance, capped him, and made an awesome quip. Now thats cold ;)

also, for my thoughts on bond; see the MEGADALTON thread in the funhouse.

I've mentioned this site before and I'll mention it again I guess. http://expectyoutodie.blogspot.com/ (http://expectyoutodie.blogspot.com/) My only caution is that it is hard to see the Bond movies in the same light after. He makes some really compelling arguments. Doesn't mean I agree with all his opinions but I probably line up closer to his rankings these days.

On a different matter, Bond soundtracks. Does anybody listen to many movie soundtracks? That is one of the major music genres I seem to listen to. I have a CD of every Bond movie except Licence To Kill. Awhile back, most were remastered and re-released and that's when I began to acquire them. If I were to rank the soundtracks, The Living Daylights is easily my hands down favorite and clear winner. After that, it gets a bit more dicey but I'd probably give it to Diamonds Are Forever as second place.

He injects too much of himself in the reviews. He is also far too reliant on DVD extras and the like to truly form his own analysis. He is also very inconsistent as to how he compares different films and any system that does pop-up is very ad-hoc.

He disliked Goldeneye's soundtrack, stating his reasons, but had mistaken symphonic for "epicness" and epic for Bond. He outright forgot that movie soundtracks complement, enhance and help set the mood of a movie. It does not make the movie.

As a reviewer, he is actually pretty bad, but as a person to poke fun and provide extra commentary for isolated key scenes and facts, he pretty good. I especially enjoy his observations as to how much America sucks in the Bond movies. But as a whole package? No.

I mean, The World is Not Enough, had issues, but to turn around and say Quantum of Solace was the better film between the two? Bullshit. QoS ranks very bloody low in my rankings close to Die another Day which at least had John Cleese and a competent first half. QoS was consistent in one thing and one thing only, being terriblely inconsistent.

QoS abortive attempts to be come more Broune like isn't even don't competently. While I am no fan of the Broune films and the style of action it subscribes to, it does them well within the confines of it's own style.

Screw it, I am not here to write a review.

I can't really rank the sound track since a lot of the time you end up ranking them according to how good the movie was as being a movie soundtrack, it's more about the complete package. However, I do dislike two of openers to recent Bond films, QoS and Die Another Day. QoS is a poor attempt to copy Casino. DAD computer mangled mess of a song.

I wouldn't disagree with you Kush for ranking Diamond's sound track so high since it feels like the final maturing of the Connery era music with all the good bits in one basket. Except the opening song letting it down as there were better songs before it in an otherwise excellent collection.

The Living Daylights is pretty good, but I feel it lacks a certain timelessness. Other than that, it is very to listen to.

Die another Day feels very different at the beginning, Bond is a POW in North Korea for through 9/11 and is brought back only to go Rogue. It starts going of the rails at the Gene Therapy in Cuba and after that it only has the Sword fight as a high point.

I need to listen to more Bond soundtracks. I'm particularily fond of movie soundtracks and Bond music in general so it is surprising to realize I've not really delved into the full soundtracks yet.

I remember the sword fight in DOD being the sole high point as well. It's pretty much the only thing I remember from that movie. It was one of the few I think I went to the theaters to see instead of waiting for the rental and I remember it being quite forgettable.

I'm at the library so I'm going to go see if I can find some of the soundtracks to take home.

In terms of Bond soundtracks, I prefer "From Russia With Love", "The Living Daylights", and "Casino Royale". Those are the best three IMO.

However, I do love the "Destroy Silicon Valley" theme from "A View to a Kill"... it's oddly creepy, and a standout theme from the franchise as a whole.

I liked Casino Royale but really hated Quantum of Solace. The first one was a very intelligent, well-paced movie. The second one was a series of overblown action sequences.

That's what a writers strike does.  I don't know why they were crazy enough to risk ruining the Bond series's reputation like that after only just repairing it.  They should have just waited.  Instead, they destroyed the setup the end of Casino Royale would have provided for a competent writer and poisoned whatever overarching plot might have been developed.

To be honest it's about time Bond 23 got put on hold. It happened to Stargate last year (MGM's second biggest franchise, according to them) with all the DVD movies being put on indefinite hold so i don't see how Bond, which'll cost several times more, would escape their financial troubles too.

Good news for Bond fans, Bond 23 is back in production now that MGM's financial situation is resolved. MGM and EON Holdings (EON owns the Bond license) announced that it is back on track for a November 9, 2012 release. Daniel Craig will return as James Bond and Sam Mendes will still be director. The script is from Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan.
