Title: So who commited digital genocide?
Post by: Stratos on April 24, 2010, 05:43:40 PM
Looks like 'The Great Bot Purge Of 2010' has commenced and will go down in history as the greatest digital slaughter of the new decade.
Only 6000 members versus a previous number of 13694
Over 7000 bots were killed in the forum strike of 2010. Did you lose someone in this attack?

Oh wow, I didn't even notice that. Good catch!
I'm going to guess that an admin decided to go through and delete a bunch of members with 0-3 posts, which are all likely bots. I'm pretty sure only admins can delete members, so I'm going to guess it was MegaByte, second guess Pale.

Soooooo........
The countdown to the 10,000th member begins anew.

Considering this year is already a record year for new members I'm sure we'll break it before the end of the year.

Yeah, but how many of those were just eradicated?

How many of the new members will be destroyed? This is only the beginning, no bots are safe!

What I'm saying is if it keeps the pace of new member sign ups we've already had then we will break 10k this year.
In the first 4 months of 2010 we've already gotten more new members than 2009 and 2008 combined.
Even without the abnormal boost in April we were on par to have a record year. It's quite possible it has to do with the 3DS and possible Wii2 excitement but more likely the April spike is because of a new strain of bots that learned to bypass the forum security software.
LOL, maybe I should have just kept this in the stats thread. I meant it to be funny and silly but it's getting too serious.

My point was, how many of those new members will be bots who will be deleted? If the staff are going to start cracking down and removing spambots, it'd take a long time to rack up enough legitimate members to reach 10,000.
And I probably shouldn't assume that they're done either. I'm sure not all of those 6,000 members are legit. We may lose more.

I don't think they will do it again for a while. Just cull the list when it gets to a certain point.
It's like our computer system at work can only hold so many customers. But once it fills a certain percent of the database it goes through and deletes older accounts that have not been used for a while.

I have no problem with this purge, Robots aren't people and they don't deserve human rights. Keep 'em out of where I eat and sleep, they can do down to the bots only sections of the forum.
