Title: Dropbox
Post by: MegaByte on April 08, 2010, 01:12:50 AM
Does anybody else use Dropbox? I've found it very useful to synchronize my laptop, desktop, and work computers' important files automatically. The files are also available through a web interface, and they keep an archive of old versions of the files in case you need to undo something major. You can also make certain files public to share them on the web. I've been using it since it was in beta, and it's worked great for me under Windows and Linux (Mac and iPhone available too).
You get 2GB free, but if you sign up through this link, you get an extra 250MB to start out with (and so do I, which I will greatly appreciate!). They have paid versions with more space. https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTExMjE5OQ

Newscast folk has been using it to share mp3s of our parts of the episode for months. It works really well.

FTP doesn't autosync or do version control.

Proof? I can't find any such program, but I'd be interested if I could.

Dropbox is great. I've been using MobileMe more for this kind of thing lately, but having a Dropbox account available as a secondary option is nice. I also store some videos on there, so I can watch them via streaming on my iPhone without having to find space to store them on the device, which is handy when I have so much music and so many apps and only 16 gigs of space to go around.

SO this is like an online HDD that you can access from anywhere or anything that's capable, and it allows you to keep backup copies of everything yet update all connected copies so that they are current?
So I could store videos, music, documents and whatever on there. Then access my music and videos from a friends computer, edit and update documents for work from a clients house, or my own house, then send the edits to my work computer so that i can access it there or from home and every copy is as updated as the last?

Yes, that's exactly what it is.

Yeah, Dropbox is awesome, I've been using it for a while. And it's a thousand times simpler to use than any FTP client I've ever looked at.
