Title: New Gamecube Owner
Post by: jrlibrarian on March 07, 2010, 09:16:57 PM
Hello,

I just traded in about 12 DS games and finally got a Nintendo Gamecube.

I got many games, but would like your opinion on what to play through first.

Super Mario Sunshine
Pikmin
The Legend of Zelda
Zelda II
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Luigi's Mansion
SSBM: Single Player Mode
MKDD: Grand Prix
Paper Mario: TTYD
Metroid Prime

Thank you.

Luigi's Mansion

Well do you want to play the best game first or last? I.e. Do you want to play Metroid Prime now or later?

Luigi's Mansion will take about 6-7 hours (although it is a good game and you will enjoy it), might as well take care of that first.

Paper Mario: TTYD is a RPG (not a deep one since it was designed for even non-RPG fans to be able to enjoy it, but still a RPG), so that will take you awhile.

SSBM, do you mean literally just the single player mode and not multiplayer mode against CPU's? That could still take awhile as some of the Events are brutal (50 and 51 are a bitch to beat).

Really, almost all of those are good game (I hate Majora's Mask and will never get why anybody likes it), so it doesn't really matter which order you want to go in.

Probably a mix of all of them. I don't really want to play all the good games at the end, but I would like to play all of them soon.

Well if you've never played a Prime game (or even  Metroid for that matter), I would start with that.

Then I would play Pikmin, then Sunshine and then take it from there.

Why the **** don't you own Wind Waker? Get that now. Like, right now. Run! RUN FASTER!

Also get Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, but only get it with bongos. It'll chnage your life.

I tried to get those, but my Gamestop didn't have them, and I didn't have any more money. I was just going off what I got from trade-ins.

Metroid Prime and Pikmin are my favorites from the list. And if you've never played Resident Evil 4, I bet that's a cheap buy.

I would go with Luigi's Mansion first. It is a short but memorable game.

As for games to get after you are done with these. Tales of Symphonia and Skies of Arcadia Legends are 2 good RPGs on the system.
The Prince of Persia Trilogy is good from what I heard. Sands of Time,Warrior Within, Two Thrones are good.

Resident Evil,Resident Evil 0 and RE4 are the standouts. All of the Resident evil games are on the cube.

Soul Calibur 2 is on the Cube. Excellent fighting game. Link is in the Cube version.

I don't know if you like the Harvest Moon series but there is a few games on the Cube. A Wonderful Life and Magical Melody.
F-Zero GX is a excellent but hard game.

If you like Metroid Prime there is Metroid Prime 2:Echos.

Super Monkey Ball 2 is a good and fun game.

The other games mentioned before me are good as well.

Honest question: why did you buy a Gamecube when a Wii is backwards compatible with Gamecube games?

So on that note my suggestion to buy a Game Boy Player since that is not compatible with the Wii and is the absolute coolest Nintendo accessory of all time!  It plays every Game Boy game ever made on your TV!  YEAH!!

Well, almost (minor exceptions include Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble, which required you to tilt the Game Boy Color to move Kirby).

jrlibrarian doesn't own a Wii. (http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=28745.0)  It sounds like he's on a tight budget so purchasing a Wii probably isn't an option right now.

Play with your gamecube in your hands?
It does have a handle afterall and is small enough to hold.

Planning to get the Game Boy Player once I have enough money. I am planning to stick with Gamecube until the next console comes out. I hope that it will be backwards compatible with Wii games, and then I will be able to be caught up with everything.

On that note, what Game Boy games should I pick up with the player?

If you plan on playing Resident Evil (one), RE Zero or any of the other REs, play them before RE 4. Once you go to the improved control scheme, you won't want to go back.

Mario Tennis for the Game Boy Color. Hands down my favorite handheld game ever; the great gameplay of Mario Tennis fused with an RPG.

I'm playing through Wind Waker for the first time right now actually.  I missed the GameCube too and I've always hated any form of RPG but decided to pick this one due to the high praise round here, and it looked fun enough.  I dug it for awhile but then I got lost in the bottom of some castle, must, press, on.

It's not on your list, but I'd highly recommend Time Splitters 2.

Cheaper. Plus, I suspect he was probably offered all those games with the purchase of the system.

It isn't as cool as the Super Gameboy. Both peripherals are basically the same, but the Super GB pulls ahead because it was the very first, and also because it didn't just make GB games play on a TV, it also made them in color.

Was there a retroactive session where everyone played Luigi's Mansion again?  If not, we should have one!  It's also on my shortlist of GameCube titles to play.  Definitely gets my vote.

One tip: if you are planning to play Majora's Mask on GameCube, save often.  Recently started playing this, got in about an hour and had everything freeze.  Now I need to start over (this time with the Virtual Console release on Wii).

PIKMIN

I just wanted to quote this so that you would see it twice.

If you do play Pikmin and you like it (you will) make sure to grab the sequel, which is also great but has a bit of a different feel to it. Different people seem to prefer one of the two over the other; I don't want to start an argument, but the people who say the first one is better are wrong.

Pikmin was not worth $50.

Even less people cared for Pikmin 2.

It was done way back in RetroActive #2: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=27319.0

Also, Pikmin was definitely worth $50, and Pikmin 2 was even better. They are easily must-own games for anybody with a GameCube (and Wii, although I would recommend the New Play Control! versions for Wii owners).

What's with all of the game recommendations in this thread? This person just wanted to know what game to play first.

I think Luigi's Mansion is a good one to start with, as it was a launch game so it isn't up to par with the later games. Plus it is short and sweet. What percentage of completion do you want to achieve in Super Smash Brothers Melee? 100% could take you a while. Maybe play that next and see how much of it you want to complete.

I'd save Metroid Prime for last since it is the best single player offering of the bunch. Oh, and be careful playing Majora's Mask as it has some freeze glitches. I would recommend getting that game in some other form (N64 or VC) if possible.

I always liked Pikmin over Pikmin 2. Most people hated the time limit, but I actually enjoyed it. I thought it gave the game a sense of anxiety which is a classic adventure trait.

Beyond Good & Evil
Viewtiful Joe

I'm probably forgetting a few. I am not forgetting Mario Sunshine. I left that sh*t out.

I really liked that one. Hears the following Spidermans where nowhere near as good.

I'd have to second Pikmin, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Metroid Prime, and Wind Waker as essentials on GC.

Tangent: And even though Pikmin 2 improved on Pikmin, I didn't care that much for the dungeon-crawling grottos after a while and I didn't even finish the game.  Keeping the game above ground kept it more enjoyable imo, and kept the pikmin feel to it rather than the impending sense of doom I got after each time I descended and saw this wasn't the last level.  It felt like it became more about the dungeons than exploration later in the game.

Anyhow, I think PoP is a must, and Wind Waker is great if you're familiar with Zelda (maybe play OoT first), Pikmin also because it's a unique kind of game, and Prime is great (but don't be surprised if you play it, then put it down for a year or so and then come back to finish it.  Great game, but that happened with others too and it happened to me with both Prime 1 and 2.  Worth pushing through/coming back to if that happens).

Exact thing happened to me with Prime 1. It's actually how I play most Metroid games. I play for a while and stop for some reason then return to it months later and get totally addicted to it and can't put it down until I finish.

Because you're terrible bounty Hunters.  Wouldn't be surprised if DAWG collected the bounty and ended up on TV with Mother Brain's head on a plate before you.

Only with the DK Bongo controllers though, the game is not nearly as much fun with just the GameCube controller (it's like playing the Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution games with normal controllers, it's possible; but it's not as much fun and it defeats the whole point).
