Title: Why Do Mature Games on the Wii Sell Poorly?
Post by: Kytim89 on January 27, 2010, 02:05:04 AM
What does Dead Space Extraction, House of the Dead: Overkill, Madworld, Silent Hill, and No More Heroes have in common? They all sold poorly on Nintendo's console. Well, why has this occured? I think it goes much deeper than the Wii's family friendly persona to a number of reasons.
One reason is that the publisher did a poor job of advertising the games on the wii(I am looking at you SEGA!) and then were baffled to find the games did not sell well.
Does anyone else have any ideas? And if so, is there a market for M-rated games on the wii?

I don't think any of those game would have been million sellers on the 360 or PS3.
Also, No More Heroes didn't sell poorly compared to other Suda games. It has about 450k LTD total.

I believe we had several threads about that already that had plenty of posts with plenty of reasoning, I don't feel like typing it all out again.

I think they all had lower budgets than big-name hits, lower advertising budgets, and most were made as afterthoughts in an attempt to cash in on the most successful current platform.
Those that weren't afterthoughts, Mad World, House of the Dead: Overkill, and No More Heroes, have all been successes, considering Sega is thinking about a Mad World Sequel, said they were happy with HotD:O, and a sequel to No More Heroes 2 came out today.
Name another poorly-selling Mature game that isn't a cash in or a fiscal success, and maybe we'll start talking. Still, remember games like GTA 4, and Modern Warfare 2 have gigantic budgets, both in development and marketing. Any game given that type of treatment on the Wii has done well. The problem? Nintendo is the only company giving games that type of treatment on the Wii.
There you go, I think most of us here agree on something more or less similar to that. Go dig up a talkback thread about Deadspace if you want more.

A good game is a good game. Regardless of the system or rating. But if you don't tell people about it, it won't sell. Despite being on the Gamecube and PS2, RE4 Wii sold over a million. Umbrella Chronicles sold pretty well, though I don't know the rating...
You can't do niche genres with low budgets and expect a blow out in sales. Let's see a company dump 10mil in a standard action title on the Wii and then we'll see how it goes.

I don't think any of those game would have been million sellers on the 360 or PS3.
Why not? They are mature-rated games which received favourable reviews, which is the type of thing that seemingly sells well on other systems. The few mature-rated games which sold well on Wii are a part of an established franchise, so it would seem that new IPs have a better chance of selling on the other two systems.

A lot of M games on the Wii are on-rails shooters, which pisses me off because I like to have the freedom to move around and explore and whatnot. I imagine a lot of gamers agree with me, so that's why these games get shunned.

There are no million selling rail shooters on the HD consoles. Mad World and No More Heroes are very Japanese and quirky. Okami and Godhand didn't do gangbusters on the PS2 for that same reason. As far as I know, Silent Hill:Homecoming hasn't broke a million combined on the PS3, 360 and PC.

Nope, not getting into this again after we had what...3-4 Talkback threads alone dedicated to discussing this very subject. Wouldn't be prudent...not gonna do it...not at this juncture.
Besides, the better question is to ask "why don't games sell on Wii." Whether they are "mature" or not is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. And we've discussed that subject as well...a lot.

Here is some suggested reading for you, Kytim89. Perhaps you'll find some insight in one of these topics.
We will now talk about Krystal from StarFox Adventures. In StarFox Adventures, Krystal does not wear a lot. When playing StarFox Adventures, we are always trying to see more than what the game will show of Krystal. Krystal has sky blue fur with gentle curvature throughout her figure.

Krystal is a cartoon fox and therefore not attractive.
If Krystal was a "fox" wouldn't that mean she was attractive?
Not with all that body hair.

The fact Krystal wears some clothing must mean certain parts of her soft furry body aren't adequately covered with hair, and thus are exposed. Further investigation might be required.

I'm ashamed to say that I already "investigated" when she was suspended in stasis or whatever near the end of Dinosaur Planet. I can confirm that there was just more fur down there.
And now I have to go wash my brain out with soap again.
(In my defense, I was curious how a company with as wholesome an image as Nintendo's would handle such things.)

You guys probably already have or soon will make Kytim89 super angry. I bet he/she is going to get so excited seeing so many replies in his/her thread only to find that each one is absolute funny rubbish.
Krystal, lame! Unless she was in Brawl, then she might be cool.

Lots of excitement over Krystal here. Perhaps a " mature" Wii title starring Krystal would do well??

Dark Krystal Chronicles.
She can play the role of Nintendo's bad girl, much like Zero Suit Samus, but with zero suit, as in no suit, and she uses her feminine ways to seduce the men(and women ;)) to get what she wants.

IGN's score of the game: 5.0
It won't sell well without HD GRAFIKS.

lol developers need to set thier sights a little lower 200k is a success profitwise. But i could ist my reasons
Dead Space Extraction - its a gimped on rails version of a recently created new franchise, the fact that its based off something that isn't established, and then its gimped didn't help
House of the Dead: Overkill - this game doesn't sell that well because it isn't as popular a genre as say survivor horror
Madworld- i was going to buy it, but never saw it in any stores(ie wal-mart) since i would have to drive to another town to find it. I don't buy much online..so i wasn't going to do that.
Silent Hill- totally under advertised. Its got great reviews, and its an established franchise, but i didn't hear how great it was until two weeks or so after it came out.
No More Heroes- oh this game is made by Suda? I remember getting excited about Killer 7, but then thinking WTF, plus when I watched the videos for it I was like, god that voice acting was stupid and annoying. No buy regardless of how cool some of the other stuff was.

Dark Krytal Chronicles should be an M-rated GTA style sandbox game set in the Star Fox universe.

This thread proves that Nintendo fans aren't mature enough for the sophisticated M-rated games that 3rd parties make, which in reality suck alot sans a few.
