Title: Capcom Announces Mega Man 10 for WiiWare
Post by: Halbred on December 09, 2009, 08:41:26 PM
The latest issue of Nintendo Power reveals that the game will include three playable characters, and a robot master named Sheep Man.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=20517

Following the success of Mega Man 9, Capcom has announced a sequel , the aptly named Mega Man 10.

Nintendo Power announced that Mega Man 10 is well on its way, and features significant changes to the traditional Blue Bomber formula. Among them is a bizarre story — the world's robots have been infected with a virus called Robotena, which causes them to overheat and go haywire. This could be an homage to the actual Mega Man X series, in which the Sigma virus causes robots to turn evil.

At any rate, Mega Man's posse aims to find components for a cure. More interestingly, it  's not just Mega Man this time. His brother, Proto Man, and an as-of-yet unnamed hero will be along for the ride, selectable from the very beginning and, hopefully, at any other time. A likely suitor for this third character could be Bass, an anti-hero character from Mega Man 7 and 8.

The game will also offer an Easy mode, perhaps to counteract the notoriously high difficulty of the series. As for the Robot Masters, only one has been revealed: Sheep Man. Yes, you read that right. Sheep Man looks like a cartoon sheep with robot arms and legs. He charges electricity, floating into the air and raining lighting over the battlefield. Once you defeat him, you acquire his weapon: Thunder Wool.

There is no release date for Mega Man 10 yet, and there is also no word on whether or not this will be a WiiWare exclusive.

One day, I'm going to get around to beating Mega Man 9.  I just can't seem to muster up the interest to pursue that game all the way through, even though I like it.

As for MM10, if the last game is any indication I'm probably going to go with the inevitable PSN version this time due to just having a more comfortable controller for my hands than the Wiimote on its side.  I hope we'll see the return of the Megabuster charge (not likely) and the slide in this one, as the gameplay just feels too restrictive for me limited to just the standard buster shot at first.

Seriously, though...Sheep Man?  I think Top Man just got toppled for most ridiculous Mega Man boss enemy in the original series.  It looks like we're moving into Mega Man X territory on the boss names, for better or worse.

I think clown man and aqua man are both worse than top man...
Hell, their voices alone make them worse than sheep man!

This news excites me in places that I shouldn't talk about on the forums. Oh yes!

I think 4 had the strangest ones like Pharaoh Man, Dust Man, Dive Man, etc. 6 was kind of weird too with Centaur Man and Yamato Man. I still don't know what "Yamato" means...

The problem with Mega Man 9 is that it tried too hard to replicate the old NES games and ended up falling flat, it's like Capcom thought the reason they are so highly regarded is because they're NES games. It's still a good game, but the NES ones have it beat. It is better than 7 and 8 though.

I hope they bring back the slide and charge moves. I'll probably get it if it is 1,000 points.

According to Wikipedia, "Yamato" basically refers to Japan or the Japanese people in general. It would be like calling a character "Yankee Man" or "Canuck Man".

Yeah, there's been some odd ones... Bosses aside, I still can't forget the killer hairball spitting cats in Mega Man 3.

If I remember correctly, Yamoto Man & Knight Man were fan made bosses that were put into the game. Guess they were running low on ideas even before Clown Man.

Haven't finished MM9 either but I'll probably get 10 anyways. Though I'm not sure how an "easy" mode will effect things. With 9 I'm more likely to die falling down a pit or onto some spikes thanks to moving platforms than from any enemy.

Capcom has used fan ideas for a long time. After the original Mega Man came out and was so popular, Capcom had a contest in Japan for fans to design bosses to be used in Mega Man 2. They've done this on many occasions.

As for Easy Mode, maybe they could do things like make the platforms longer or move more slowly.

Isn't Yamato man something more based on a Samurai, or something like that?  I was under the impression they translated his name as generically as possible.

GK and T.J. Spike there was a contest in Nintendo Power to design bosses.Knightman and Yamatoman were the two that were added in MM6. Also Nintendo published MM6 since there was demand for more Megaman NES games.I think by the time MM6 came out the SNES was out for I think a year or so. So Capcom was probably working on the X series.

My brother and I once tried to come up with Mega Man boss names.  He even made sprites for them all.  We started off with a handful of okayish ideas: Drill Man (who was not much different than Crash Man), Ninja Man.  But eventually we just gave up and came up with stupid ideas like Food Man and Slippers Man.  Stupid ideas proved to be much easier.

So no surprise that Sheep Man was just announced.  It's hard to think of good ideas for Mega Man.  All the obvious ideas were taken long ago.

I always liked ones like Centaur Man or Pharoah Man because they looked cool.  Their powers didn't make much sense but they at least looked cool.  The worst for me was stuff like Dust Man.  He's a fucking vacuum cleaner.  What sort of kid would ever for a second think he was either cool or intimidating?  In real life he would be a laughing stock.

I really need to get around to buying the hard mode and Proto Man DLC.

I don't know about the WiiWare version, but the PlayStation Network version has these pieces of DLC for the game:
"Mega Man 9 Hero Mode"- Add's a harder difficulty option called Hero Mode. $0.99
"Mega Man 9 Superhero Mode" - Same as above
"Mega Man 9 Special Stage" - Adds a special stage to Time Attack mode. $0.99
"Mega Man 9 Endless Attack Mode" - Adds a mode called Endless Attack.  The goal is to get as far as you can in a stage without dying, progress in measures in "screens". $2.99
"Mega Man 9 Proto Man Mode" - Adds a new mode called Proto Man Mode to the Special Games Section, lets you play as Proto Man. $1.99

What TJ Spyke said, except add one cent to each of the prices for the Wii version.

I saw a video of endless attack mode--it looked horrible.  It was pretty much one of those fan-made ROM-hacks.  The others are probably worthwhile, especially if you like the game as much as I do.

The ironic thing about the DLC is that if this were an actual NES game then all of it would have been unlockables instead.

The announcement that Proto Man will be playable right from the start is good news, though I have a feeling they are going to pull the same DLC scam with this game. It wouldn't surprise me if that yet-to-be-named character was DLC...

No seriously. Aside from some younger generation gamers who just didn't get what they were trying to accomplish (15 year olds like our very own Stevey :P), this game is loved for emulating the NES style gameplay (and look).

They should parody some actual super heroes if they are gonna go that route.

Bat Man
Spider Man
Iron Man
Super Man
Ultra Man
Aqua Man
Multiple Man
Invisible Man

that's an entire game right there.

Lack of interest (and lack of a comfortable control scheme on Wii.  My hands are too big for the Wiimote on its side, and the Classic Controller doesn't have a good grip on the sides).  In that half hour you say it can take you to beat the game, I can play a game that's much more fun and doesn't make me pull my hair out with cheap difficulty spikes (both literal and figurative)...like Majora's Mask, which I'm replaying right now, or the MegaMan Anniversary Collection, which I've been playing off and on for a year now.

The only one I know they couldn't get away with is Iron Man since that is how his name is actually spelled (Marvel does "Spider-Man" instead of "Spider Man", DC does "Superman" instead of "Super Man", etc. But Marvel uses the "Iron Man" spelling and spacing).

Hindered? Not unless you're comparing it to the X series (and then only X1, 2 i'm assuming SNES version of 3) but those games are a different beats all together. The gameplay was PERFECT for what a classic MM game should be, considering Capcom messed up the gameplay (3 times over) in the classic series before 9 reverted back to the series roots.

If MM9 played like MMX you'd have a ton of fans who would've skipped it over (which is sad because i'm the kind of MM fan that enjoys both series).

Yep, i've heard the similarities before. There's a few more in the MM series actually.. Hell, once I was listening to some guitarists MMX melody that my girlfriend found on myspace, and there's one song he plays from x1 that sounds incredibly similar to an Iron Maiden song.. i think it was the solo from The Virus.

It sounds like you're saying the 8-bit graphics and sound have a direct relation to the gameplay. I've not played any of the X series besides the first, but I can tell you that if the series isn't as good (which is subjective) it is not because they weren't NES games.

Removing the slide and charge was a step backward, which makes the action a bit more redundant. Restricting the game to the NES limitations results in less creative designs. They no longer have to limit the number of enemies on screen or tone down moving objects. They could still capture the "classic" gameplay without having to actually use NES hardware. There have already been six... well I guess SEVEN games on the NES, so by sticking with that limitation they are stifling creativity and the series is becoming stale. There's nothing they can create which hasn't been done seven times over.

so by sticking with that limitation they are stifling creativity and the series is becoming stale.

I LOL'd real hard right there. The series was pretty stale when X came out and that didn't do TOO much to differentiate itself. Now you have 2 Legends games (plus 1 spinoff) and countless Battle Network games, 4 MMZ games and i don't know how many MXZY whatever games their are now for the DS. MM has spin-offs of spin-offs in its own series, nothing says stale like that.

Back to the other point we were arguing, I just feel that MM9 going back to the classic style graphics DID in fact improve the gameplay because capcom now no longer had to worry about the animation they way they did with MM7/8/MM&B which actually slowed down the action making those games incredibly boring compared to the NES games (which was made even more appearant by already having a few X series games under my belt when I finally played MM7/8/MM&B). There's also the fact that the level design no longer suffered from MM8's 2d sidescrolling on sprites intended to look 3Dish which, if i recall correctly, had many players missing platforms because they'd look like you could land on them but the platforms edge wasn't really there, causing cheap deaths that in the NES games wouldn't of happened because everything was flat. Though i think some of the X series games (after 4) had similar issues, but of course with the wall-jump move available, it probably wasn't as big a problem.

So there, thats my opinion on MM9 and mine alone. I'm sorry you don't see it that way, and I don't understand the point of keeping the argument going because we both know if capcom wanted to, they could've made the game look and sound like an NES game but done things the NES couldn't do; like have more than 3 M-buster shots on screen at once, plus more enemies, etc... but that wasn't the point of the game. They weren't trying to innovate or reinvent the series, it was just fan service. Guess you're one of those people in the "just don't get it" category.
Title: Re: Capcom Announces Mega Man 10 for WiiWare
Post by: Mop it up on December 14, 2009, 12:19:43 AM
I think it is silly to say that somebody "doesn't get" a game. People have different tastes and want different things from games, it comes down to preference and not whether or not people "get" a game. I understand exactly what they were going for but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

And yeah, the Mega Man franchise has become stale, that doesn't make this series any different. I haven't played any of those other Mega Man games besides the first "X" one so I don't know what it became. But I do know that this game doesn't need to be in 8-bit to have the same gameplay. They wouldn't need to add complex animations or backgrounds, just like Miyamoto wouldn't need to create complex dress physics for Peach if she were in New Super Mario Brothers.

I'm still probably going to get this game. As I've said before, a game doesn't need to do something fresh or innovative to be enjoyable. I would just rather see something different from this series.
Title: Re: Capcom Announces Mega Man 10 for WiiWare
Post by: EasyCure on December 14, 2009, 10:03:38 AM
But my point is that the gameplay is exactly where the devs wanted it to be, so expecting it to be different, is not getting the point. You can disagree with the choices the dev team made and I won't argue with you because they're your opinions, but when you say the game fell flat for doing what its SUPPOSED to do (and doing it perfectly) well.. that's different :)

And my point in bringing up the spin-offs upon spin-offs is to remind you that you shouldn't expect to "see something different from this series" so why hold your breathe? At this point they're not going to give original megaman a beam sabre for intense close-combat, or mixable upgrades that can combine to make different unique armors, because they have spin-offs (love em or hate em) that utilize those gameplay ideas. All you can exppect from MM10 is what you got with MM9, and hope you can slide/charge (which I think is confirmed you can't do, so again: why hold your breathe?).
Title: Re: Capcom Announces Mega Man 10 for WiiWare

A game can fall flat even if it perfectly matches the developer's expectations because it's not the dev who judges the game, it's the customer.
Title: Re: Capcom Announces Mega Man 10 for WiiWare
Post by: EasyCure on December 14, 2009, 10:26:12 AM
Then we're just arguing semantics because I took Mop_it_ups comments to mean the game "fell flat" as a whole, ie it was utter garbage to anyone that played it and not that she was dissapointed in certain aspects of it but was still able to enjoy it. Because that's fine, even I have some gripes with the game (some weapons were boring) but I wouldn't ever insinuate that it sucked because it suceeded at doing what the devs wanted it to do :P

My other point still stands though, expecting too much from the 10th installment in a franchise series (that's already had countless spin-offs) is setting yourself upfor dissapointment, and complaining after the fact is like complaining that the next mario game falls flat because you're still jumping from platform to platform ;)

IMO it fell short of its goal to return Mega Man to its NES glory, instead it created a mixture of MM2 mechanics and MMX8 level design.

No, at least Twilight Princess looks better than previous Zelda games.  Mega Man 9 can't say the same compared to previous games in its series.  If you're going to make a new NES game, fine...but make it the best-looking NES game ever.  The level design was pretty poor as well.  In fact, only the soundtrack was considerably awesome, IMO.

but when you say the game fell flat for doing what its SUPPOSED to do (and doing it perfectly) well.. that's different :)
But I don't think it really achieved its goal. It was attempting to replicate Mega Man 2 but it is nowhere near as good. It's easy to make a game 8-bit and say "here's an NES game!" and yeah, they accomplished that, but it's just not very well designed.

I'm not expecting anything; Mega Man 9 WAS what I expected it to be, a game that tries too hard to replicate a past greatness but fails in that regard because greatness cannot be achieved if you're specifically trying to create it. A game stuck in the past that's still good but squandering its potential. I expect the same from Mega Man 10. Capcom misses the point of why those old games are so highly regarded: great design and great music. Neither needs to be confined to the limitations of the NES to exist. Mega Man should take a page from New Super Mario Brothers.

Toilet Princess, indeed.

If Twilight Princess used Nintendo 64-quality graphics, sound, and limitations, then I suppose it would be like Mega Man 9.

Didn't mm9 do things musicaly that actually couldn't be doneon the NES,I thought I read that here actually...

And we're gonna have to agree to disagree because I put mm9 in my top 3 mm games (which is 2, 3, & 9)

Yeah, it rehashed old content (music from less popular NES MM games).  It's a very modern tech thing to do.

Only a couple tracks (or very very few) were actually original.

MM9 was the Toilet Princess of Mega Man games.

So it's the best Mega Man game ever?

Since you need clarification, it's one of the most forgettable face-palmiest of the series.  An indication that the game industry is going downhill in a merry sled.  When the bar is set so high in the past, it's so much easier to go under it.  That is Toilet Princess.  That is Mineral Guy 9.

well if thats the case.. i'd like to quote this:

Quote from:  From "A Strange Day" by The Cure
My head falls backs
And the walls crash down
And the sky
And the impossible
Explode
Held for one moment I remember a song
An impression of sound
Then everything is gone
Forever

If the industry's going downhill, then this awesome game is like the song i'll remember before my time comes..
