Title: PixlBit - Celebrating One Year With a One Night Marathon
Post by: Nick DiMola on October 13, 2009, 02:37:04 PM

I hate to bump a thread from the dead and pimp stuff, but PixlBit is turning 1 and we're throwing a birthday bash in the form of a PlayBit. In addition to the PlayBit, we'll be doing a simultaneous live podcast of sorts and taking calls. To top it all off, we'll be doing some trivia and giving away E3 swag.

For the games, we'll be playing all Japanese stuff including Custom Robo 64, Doshin the Giant, the Kururin series, Giftpia, Captain Rainbow, Nonono Puzzle Chai-Rian, and Donkey Konga 3.

If you are interested, you can check out the article here (http://www.pixlbit.com/features?action=showFeature&featureId=210) and tune in come 7PM EST this Friday (09/24).

----------------

I know that we have rules against shamelessly pimping ****, but I'd like to think that I've perhaps earned the right to do so.

Anyhow, as you guys know, Chessa and I have done a couple marathons here, and have seen some pretty substantial success with them. As such, we are continuing the tradition over at PixlBit.

On October 23 at 6PM EST/3PM PST we are going to start our Halloween Horror Marathon (http://pixlbit.com/features?action=showFeature&featureId=15). Unlike past marathons, we are doing this one for St. Jude Children's Hospital.

We'd love the typical crowd from NWR to pop in and chat and watch along while we play Silent Hill, Resident Evil (REmake), and Fatal Frame III. Also, if you have the funds, it would be great of you to give a bit to the foundation as they help children around the world with both their treatment and research.

Hope to see you guys there!

Are all 3 of those games on Wii?

PixlBit is a multiplatform gaming site.

No Shattered Memories probably isn't the SH Nick is referring to, it is probably the first game that is now on PSN. Fatal Frame 3 isn't on Wii either.

Nick, save yourself the torture of SH. If you want to play a worthwhile SH game, go with 2 or 3, seriously, SH is boarderline unplayable. I will definately watch the marathon, and try to chime in on Skype again. I wish you were playing RE5, 'cause I could jump in a play with you! :-D

I'd donate money, but for obvious reasons all my donation funds go the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation...

No doubt, Zach. And though St. Jude is our sponsored charity, if you guys would like to donate to another in lieu of, go for it. Giving to any good cause is always a good thing.

That doesn't answer my question.

This however does.

Having just played SH2, I've got to suggest that as a replacement for SH1.

Alright, your requests have been heard, we are considering replacing Silent Hill with Eternal Darkness, thoughts?

Nick is so perma-banned for this ****.

Crap...

In ED, play your best to not get hit.  Minimizing the time you wait around for your magick to refill so you can heal yourself can reduce the adventure time by more than half.

Personally, I thought ED was boring as hell, but hey...

Wow, I see Halbred got around to seeing that I was right about the original Silent Hill, after all.  Yeah, dump that one and go with 2 or 3.  Hell, even Homecoming would be fine.

Might I humbly request Silent Hit Origins?  Play it on PSP with the camera over your shoulder.  Be sure to wear a low-cut shirt.

How is Homecoming? I've been tempted to buy it

Vudu, I'm hoping that comment was directed at Chessa.

GP, I actually sold Homecoming. It's very slow-moving and kind of dull. The boss fights are interesting, but the dodge mechanic is woefully unreliable in close-quarters fights. Whereas SH2 and SH3 kind of move you right along, Homecoming leaves you to wander aimlessly way too often. Creature design is okay, but not as mind-blowingly "wrong" as SH3...

Well, it looks like I have the entirely opposite opinion of Homecoming as Halbred.  From a gameplay standpoint, Homecoming is probably my favorite Silent Hill game.  It's fairly linear compared to the first game and Silent Hill 2, but considering there's practically nothing to find in exploring the town in any Silent Hill game outside some med packs and ammo that's fine by me.  I found the combat system quite enjoyable, thought the dodge roll is very unreliable and the game doesn't handle fights with multiple enemies very well.  The game's also hard as sin for the first 1/2 of the game unless you really go out of your way to find all those hidden items early on and you get a really good handle on not getting hit.  The environments are very nicely done, especially the Other World, and I found the story very good if not up to the standards of SH 2 and 4 (at least the story this time is fairly easy to understand without having to read plot analysis FAQs, unlike SH 4).  I especially appreciated the (many) stylistic nods to the Silent Hill movie, which I thought was very under-appreciated in the theaters.

So in general I recommend you check it out, especially since you can find it pretty cheap these days.

I don't see the problem (playing the game over the shoulder RE4 style is what I imagined), but were you hoping for a over the shoulder cleavage shot or something?

Yet another time I agree with brood. I really like the Silent Hill movie. I may have to check Homecoming out.

If you didn't know already, you'll be happy to know that a sequel to the Silent Hill movie has been green-lit.  It's a little held up at the moment by the writer being in jail for pleading guilty to vehicular manslaughter.  How appropriate for Silent Hill.  Sadly, Christopher Gans will not return (so far) in the Director's Chair.

Honestly, if we're going for straight-on horror possibly an even greater choice would probably be Condemned: Criminal Origins.  Just a lot of good horror titles to work with.

Hell, Dead Space is an excellent horror game.

Indeed, that too.  So many better options than Silent Hill 1.  I'd also point out that as bad as Silent Hill 1 looks on my TV played via PS3, I can't imagine how much worse it would look like on streaming internet video.

I'd like to see ED and newer horror ones.  Any chance we'll see that new game, Ju-on The Grudge, or whatever it might be called?

I bumped Silent Hill for Eternal Darkness officially. Also, Chessa will be donning the Klonoa hat.

As for Ju On, we'll probably throw it up there for a bit at some point if the review copy gets here in time.

We got a copy of Ju-On in on Monday, we will definitely play at least a few minutes of the game just to show everyone what it's like. I predict that our review will be timed to go up while we are marathoning.

Tip:  Ju-On is not survival horror.  it's just horror stuff minus survival.

Tip 2:  Ju-On is only 2.5hrs long the first time thru, if you don't mess up.

Whoever that reviewer was that said the game is 7 hours long is either lying after 10min of play, or is a fucking terrible gamer.
