Title: Insanolord's Fencing Thread
Post by: NWR_insanolord on September 25, 2009, 11:20:14 PM
Has anyone here ever done any fencing (the kind with the swords)? I joined the fencing club at my college because a friend of mine was doing it and it sounded fun. Today we started learning the basics of it and it's more complicated and physically demanding than you might think from watching it (though still a lot of fun). Does anyone with actual experience know what I've gotten myself into?

Caterkiller learned the basics from soul calibur, then he took Wushu, now he does motion capture work. I know a thing or 2 from soul calibur, but i also used to watch Ruroni Kenshin, i also watched David Carradine Tai Chi Tapes, and my brothers yellow belt kempo instruction tape(made for him by his master). The key difference between me and most practitioners of martial arts is i'm not as hard as a rock.
so, here is a story. One day I went over to my friends house to go drink. My friend was like "lets start a fight club", so we went over to the park to go fight. I didn't get hurt or anything, but my friend and his friend too Taekwondo together. Its not like I didn't know how to block, so i didn't end up with more than a few bruises, but man I'm not an offensive fighter. So, punching them was like punching a brick wall. If I were to pick a fighting style that would work for me it would probably be drunken style. I wasn't drunk at the time, but if I was I think I would have been much looser, and just catch their punches. I wouldn't trust myself to drive just because it is stupid, but i have really good hand eye coordination when I'm drunk.
Fencing is different though, i have a crap load of toy swords as well as some real ones, but no-one is really interested in sparring.

Maybe you should look into Aikido instead. Using your defense to turn their offense into your offense. Using their momentum against them. There is no better way to humiliate and frustrate someone that making them dance when they are trying to fight.

For some reason i confused you with Plugabugz (i was just waking up when I posted in this topic) and van wilder is a "national lampoons" teen comedy about a party animal that doesn't want to leave college. The sequel is about the originals main characters, Van Wilder, protige Taj Mahal coming in to his own. It takes place in England however as he becomes a student teacher that takes a group of losers and turns them into campus hotshots. There's a big fencing scene in the end.
the end.

Okay, that explains that.

Wow fencing! I hope your having fun! I don't know squat about it! I am somewhat interested though, I just can't imagine spending more time in a new thing. Well consistantly at least.
You will be Raphael from soul calibur in no time! and I will be Kilik and we can have an awesome battle! Then someone can edit in all the soul calibur SFX. That sounds kinda of fun actually!
Hope you don't get poked in the eye!

The Princess Bride: The Dread Pirate Roberts + Inigo Montoya
The Mask of Zorro: Anthony Zorro + Antonio Zorro
That's what I know about fencing.
Like anything cool, fencing is physically demanding. Paintball in the woods with extra ammo, a heavily modded marker, a 20oz tank and 90-degree weather? Physically demanding.

Inigo Montoya and Alejandro Murrietta(Zorro) have similar lines
Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.
Hello. My name is Alejandro Murrietta. You killed my Brother. Prepare to die. (or something like that)
