I've done all that already. Well, I didn't switch back and forth between Mario Sunshine or 64 but I've done it all. And I think you are wimping out a bit. It should Mario 64 DS is you want to make it Macho.
Still, I was hoping DKC2 would have won the latest poll. I've been itching to play the game and that's why I went DK in my mafia game theme.

Thank you for your ambivalent enthusiasm.
I don't want to set the difficulty bar too high. But I also want to play through DKC2 and take a Double Dare approach to playing some of this stuff.
Another idea was playing through the first DKC with the no-barrel and no-midway savepoint code on. The previous Mario Kart post was a bust so I promise to swear off classic gaming forever if this sounds boring.
DO YOU TAKE THE PHYSICAL CHALLENGE?

Yeah, I'll take it but it depends on the start date. Right now I'm tied up with mafia and will be moving in a week or so. End of August and thereafter will be fine but I don't know how much you want to wait.

These threads might do better in the General Gaming forum. You should try posting them there.

I was also hoping that Donkey Kong Country 2 would have won the RetroActive poll because I wanted an excuse to buy the game. This is a bit more flimsy but it could work.

I'll do the Mario one. Sounds interesting. I'll do Prime 2 as well, since the trilogy is coming out.

I didn't really think of that..ah well.
How about monday the 17th for DKC2? If you're too busy you should skip dinner and play instead; it's not that long of a commitment.
If you want to suggest an unusual rule or play style, post it here. I will award Bobomb badges for winners of certain categories (fastest time, fewest deaths etc) which are entirely useless novelty items.

I was actually thinking a doing a similar thing to this myself. Though the point of it was to have RetroActives on obscure and somewhat rare games that would never even be allowed on the polls of the normal RA because of their difficulty to acquire.
So are we just doing a non-stop marathon of the game? I might grab a friend of mine to play along because we were playing through it together a few years ago and never finished it.

I'm only gonna select games I don't have to buy. If people are free Monday August 17 we can start it then. It shouldn't take more than a week and people can just join in whenever.
Non-stop marathons are bonus and will be awarded a Bobomb badge. Any other extra credit ideas, post them here.

Getting 102% in the game during our week-long session should be another bonus badge.
We should create forum achievements for this or something ;)

It's not over until the 102% fat lady sings for all participants.
Stratos: Totally. So far it is just a stupid achievement reward (because if you achieve it, you're da bomb) but I have no idea how to expand it into a non-dumb system.

I just want to say that if you need a gamefaq or guide for Donkey Kong Country, (any of them) you do not deserve to play video games and you are pathetic.

Not even for the secrets? Some of them are real stinkers to find if I recall.

If I can find them all without using a guide, so can anyone else. You just have to be observant.

Well it doesn't sound like people are quite ready. What about Friday August 21?

I wouldn't download it, I'd buy the original cartridge. That would take some time since I'd have to wait to find a good deal on eBay, then wait for it to be shipped to me. So don't push it back on my account, especially if you're itching to go.

I hate it when people say things like that. Not everyone is as skilled as you. Also, perhaps people don't need the guide but want to use it so they can complete it without having to spend too much time on it.

And this is RetroMachoactive...an open trash-talking zone.

Actually, I said it because I'm not that skilled at games. I've had to consult gamefaq for many games. Heck, I had to do it for Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney. Although, for the most part, most times I need to consult gamefaqs are for 3D games. For most, 2D games I can solve them 100% on my own. Maybe that's because there is only so much a space in a level so it's easier to explore every nook and cranny.

I sat and watched a friend of mine get 102% on DKC2 in an hour and a half, I know there's a bunch of those things I wouldn't have gotten without help.

Agreed. I completed the game in full as a kid, if i can't do that again now then i'm turning in my controllers dammit.
Then again, I've already downloaded DKC2 (my favorite of the 3) and completed it so i won't have to worry about it :)

Well, mafia wrapped up sooner than expected. Now I just have to move. That said, I'd hate to slow this thing down. My suggestion would be to just start this sucker like you wanted on Wednesday and have it last till the end of Aug. When I get the chance, I'll pop this puppy in and play it and join in where I can. At the end of Aug., we'll see where everybody finished up and move on.
Some other things. With regards to Bob-omb badges, if this is RetroMACHOactive, why would we switcg off with a buddy? You should have to do the whole game yourself. It's not very macho pulling in a ringer or switching off to a buddy for help. Also, fewest deaths. How is that measured? By game overs, by the number of times a Kong gets hurt, that you have to start a level over again? How does one even keep track of that?
I'll tell you the bob-omb badge I plan on earning. Filling the map with Dixie Kong's head. At the end of the level, the Kong you are controlling that hits a barrel meter or something, is the Kong that has their face show up on the level dot indicating the player has finished it. There should be a bob-omb badge for most or fewest character heads displayed. Just one thought. Maybe other badges will come to mind once play begins.
Also, I'd like to throw a couple ideas out there for other retromachoactive games and challenges. Obviously, the other Donkey Kong Countries I would like to get around to at some point. Same with DK64. But those can wait. I'd rather use this as an excuse to finish some games in my back catalogue. Ideas that come to mind are: Star Fox Adventures 100%. Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime 100%. WarioLand 4 100% and my secret shame Star Fox 64. Oh, I've beat that game. But I've never been to all the planets and I usually just follow the line on the outer edge. With that game, you can even compete for highest score as we play. And this can't be Macho unless we play F-Zero GX at some point.

I think I never got one badge in SF64 on the desert planet. But I suck at the game now and can't even get past the first level without dying (on hard). I would need to practice and ramp up to it.
I know this may be a long-shot, but I'd love to play Ogre Battle 64 since it will never get on a RetroActive unless by some slim chance it comes out on VC.

Good question, I have some synchronicity badges in mind. (eat bananas or wear a red hat while playing, that sort of thing)

Only good way to do this is by keeping your own pen and paper nearby. hash marks ftw

Filling the map with Dixie Kong's head.
This is a great idea, i love it.
A run through of a GX circuit on expert mode is a MUST. I added Sim City to the original post. DK64 could be timed for a 10-year anniversary Nov. 22.
If the mods don't mind I'll start a new clean thread on friday and use this for general discussion. Any questions or ideas, post away.

I did want to say that I do like the Sim City idea. My only concern is which one we would play. Would any Sim City do or would it be limited to the SNES version? Or could I use the DS version? Would a computer version work? Of course, we can worry about that when we get there.
Getting back to DKC2, you still haven't answered how deaths are measured. Is it by game overs, every time a Kong is injured or when you run out of Kongs in a level and have to start over?
The Synchronicity badge is interesting. I guess I'll have to get a pink beret and top and a blond ponytail to win that one. Nothing could be more macho. Also, I'll attach the ponytail to my ceiling fan so that it swirl in a helicopter fashion just like Dixie. Synchronicity hasn't been this fun since The Police.

Sim City: I really dislike the DS version. The SNES version is on VC but we'll go with whatever most people have.
Death = both Kongs die and the balloon goes pop.
