Story to come. Thank you all for killing Shigeru Miyamoto so soon. How the heck am I supposed to explain this so soon?

Alright, let me break this down:  We don't get new information after day one this time.  There's no investigator, there's no one with a role that's worth speaking out and standing up to gather a townie base.  There's not a chance of some person magically putting pieces together on day 2, or 3, or 4 or 5.  Whatever we get, we have to make ourselves, and if you're just going to choose not to vote off someone, that's as good as declaring your intent not to determine anything.

How many times has someone said that on day one, the vote yields nothing?  That's a lie!  That's idiotic, in a lot of ways.  Heck, in my first mafia game, a mafia member died.
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=20431.0

My third mafia, a mafia player was killed by vote:
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=21385.0

The six yielded a bomber death on the first day's vote:
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=23324.0

The seventh I participated in (though the eigth with me involved), yielded an interesting first day:
http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/forums/index.php?topic=24295.0
Quickly, alliances were forged, and quickly, half the mafia was figured out, before even the first day began.  Beyond that, a known mafia player made an error and revealed every mafia member to me via private message.  The game was reset after this mistake, because it would have been very one-sided, with the only townies losing from mafia hits of malice and revenge.

The last mafia, the Mario Kart Mafia, incidentally the twelfth I was involved in and the eleventh I've played, a player that was on somebody's opposite team was voted out first... Which counts for me :P

Regardless, of all the games I've been in, including the ones I've been mafia, the ratio of 1st day vote deaths is 5:8, 5 mafia players died compared to 7 townie players.  Is that a brilliant number?  No, it isn't, and I'll be the first to admit it.  However, if you take this day as a sample, a day where no one has any information of any kind that could be considered legitimate, well, it means quite a bit, considering it beats the odds in almost every game.  Statistically speaking, the odds of voting out someone in the mafia via day one talk and discussion has yielded higher results than what several make it out to be, as though people just pull names out of a hat.  Beyond that, let's not forget that every vote by every player is evidence of some sort, and could potentially be useful.

So please take a moment to think before you say "Let's not vote out someone, since it's day one and there's never production."  No, it's not a perfect way to kill a mafia player, but the odds of reaching one, when you factor out hunches and intelligence, are much better than you think, and furthermore, if no one dies by vote, there's NO CHANCE of a mafia member dying, while they just increase the sway and power they hold over the second day's vote during the night's hit, plain and simple.

With that said (I typed it up after I got home, before Khush posted Day 2,) I'm going to gather a vote tally, actually try to post a quick list of votes, un-votes, and a sum of reasons, should I have enough time and a bit of boredom.  This is a game where the townies need to THINK, and shouldn't rely on someone to float in and carry them to victory, so please think, reason, and question if you think there's any chance you'll learn something.

The votes:
--Thatguy: un-vote Vudu (Doesn't like Vudu)
--Mop_it_up: un-vote Stratos (Traditional Day 1 vote)
GP: Vote Stratos (Following Mop_it_up's vote)
Dasmos: Vote DAaaMan (Posted first in the thread out of him and Pap)
DAaaMan: Vote Dasmos (Retalliation vote)
--thatguy: un-vote Stogi (Stogi's claim of ignorance to PM'ed roles.)
Spak: Vote Insanolord (hunch)
Pale: Vote Insanolord (Likes Spak's hunch)
Pap: Vote Dasmos (No reason cited)
--Maxi: un-vote Pale (Just to see what happens)
--thatguy: un-vote Vudu (It was possible Stogi made a mistake)
Stratos: Vote Dasmos (Break the tie between he and Dasmos)
Thatguy: Vote Stogi (Stogi asked people not to vote)
Maxi: Vote Insanolord (No reason cited at the time, lack of participation stated later)
--Stogi: Un-vote someone. (Not sure who or why, it turned to un-vote Bubba Khush)
Stogi: Vote Pap (No reason cited)
Mop_it_up: Vote Insanolord (No reason cited)
Vudu: Vote Insanolord (To prevent possibility of a tie)

End Tally:
Insanolord: 5
Dasmos: 3
Stratos: 1
DAaaMan: 1
Pap: 1
Stogi: 1

Now, with all that said and done, I still don't believe that Kashogi Stogi would make a mistake like that, not when it would take longer to type a message than it would to read what had been posted in the thread by the time the message was posted.  It's not clear evidence, no, but as of this moment, I have little more to go on, and I'll begin to look into things throughout the day, and reveal a lot, if not all, of what I come up with.

For now, though it could change, I will un-vote Stogi

Also, special thanks to Dasmos, he made the background transparent. I thought about asking him to do it, but I didn't, and he did anyways.

I didn't like how pap voted for me without a stated reason. Could it be because I voted for his (possible mafia) brother DAaaMan? Possibly. Could it be because I said he has an ugly avatar? Possibly, but I tried to help him out there so he has no excuse. Also Kashogi voted for him at the end of the day without a reason, my hunch is he voted for his mafia buddy so he could use it as an excuse in his defence later on.

Well anyway, today I am voting for the other 64 brother.

VOTE PAP64.

DAaaMan64, GP & Stratos are all still on my list too. DrewMG & thatguy are off because they have lovely avatars.

Are you suspicious of me, Dasmos, because I voted you? It was to break the tie between me, you and Insanolord. I almost went for Insano, but Maxis logic made me not vote for him. Insano is always a low-key player. I felt that wasn't nearly a reason enough to vote for him on day one. It was an impartial choice.

I'm tempted to go along with your Pap vote to try and prove my allegiance to the Townies, but Thatguy made a pretty convincing argument, changing my mind on the 'accident' Stogi made.

I'll wait until daylight tomorrow to make a vote, methinks. I need to rest my tired old eyes...

He's suspicious of you because your avatar isn't pretty, like the ones he made.

Kids these days! In my day we didn't make our own fancy transparent avatars. We got a big old pixelated image-and we were happy with it! Maybe in two colors if we were lucky! Now there are all of the moving pictures of ridiculous characters and transparent to-boot! The only time an image went transparent in my day was when one sprite went over another and the game hardware couldn't handle it. I know that is hard for you to understand in this day and age with your fancy graphics and surrounding sound systems. Pah! Why, even your pixels get shaded! The only shading we got was when the image burned into our old monitors from all of our hours of playing games. This was because our games didn't have scrolling backgrounds or multiple levels. We only had one screen that we played on over and over. And we were HAPPY! None of this dual monitor nonsense and HD gaming. Pah! High Definition gaming, more like Highly Disappointing gaming! You'd think those blokes were making B-rated movies with all those long and pathetic cut-scenes in all of those Final Evils and Resident Fantasies! Let the gameplay do the talking, or how about let the gamplay actually play and not draw out those painful excursions that people like to call 'character development' or 'driving the story'. If people want plots and deep characters they should read a book, if you kids even know what a book is, what with all of these 'digital-downloads' and 'e-books' and what-not (and the only this that should be deep in a game is the bottomless pit that will instantly kill you for one wrong step). In my day you had to wait for your parents to fire up the old horseless-carriage to ride into town on the monthly trip and hope you found a nickel in the seat for the local arcade. If you didn't want to wait for your parents to drive you, you had to walk up hill both ways! In the snow! With wolves chasing you! You kids have it easy with your StopCrazies and Gestapos around the block. In my day, we had to wait in line for a game to come out and we knew we might not get one because the store could run out. AND WE WERE HAPPY. Kids these days never seem to be happy with what they got. It's always "I can't wait for this" and "I hope that comes out soon". We had to wait YEARS before a game came out. And most likely, it was delayed another couple years for QUALITY CONTROL! Do you remember that? The Nintendo Seal of Quality? I think someone stole it because they make no mention of quality anymore. Maybe my good for nothing son could go hunting for that instead of preposterous banana hordes, he never eats the things anyway, and they're attracting flies and other annoying pests. Any dumb quack can make a game and release it to the masses now. In my day, a game was tested rigorously before it could be released and was actually barred from store shelves if it wasn't ready. But not now, now we get 'patches' to games to add stuff that should have been there from the start.

..now...now I need to rest my eyes...scamper off and play your silly games.

"Transparent Avatars"...Pah!

I was under the impression that we didn't have to explain our votes. We either vote because of pure instinct or because the evidence is right there. In my case, I found it odd that you were picking on members with ugly icons.

At the time, only you caused suspicions in me, and frankly I was going to get you off the hook for day two. Sorry if my vote annoyed you, but in Mafia its kill or be killed.

Oh, you didn't see?  You have to devote at least 300 words to explain your vote by the end of the day, otherwise it's nullified.  On top of that, if you have a post that hits the 1000 word count that day, your vote counts as double.  It's Khush's new incentive-based gameplay.

Eh, alright... Normally I wouldn't do this, not with this role, not this early, at least.  There's too few roles in the game, and too little info to rely on to start pinning down people.  If I'm wrong about Stogi, I'd be a target for lynching tomorrow, and then I'd have to do it then, anyways.

I'm the nullifier.  I didn't change a vote yesterday because, well, I wasn't around to do it, and looking, it wouldn't have made a difference, anyways.

I'm not sure what good announcing this will do, really, but hopefully it'll help us add 2 + 2 to figure out things, at least some things, today, and maybe hit the godfather, if Khush's rules mean a godfather lynch means no hit occurs that night.  This should make the day more interesting, to say the least.

I like what I've seen from thatguy, and for now, I'll unvote along with him.

unVote Stogi

It'll be hard to have any real ideas as to who is mafia until we vote one out and investigate their voting history.
Title: Re: Mafia XXXVI: Donkey Kong. Day 2. Mine Cart Madness.
Post by: Spak-Spang on August 11, 2009, 09:40:43 AM
If thatguy is telling the truth.  I think the Doctor should be protecting him.

thatguy is a good player.  Announcing his role just means he is making himself a target for the mafia.  Even if he isn't the nullifier the mafia may decide to target him because lets just say thatguy is a pretty smart player, and needs protecting.

Now, if thatguy is mafia this is pretty stupid play, because it will eventually be discovered because he just claimed somebody elses role and his time is limited in on this game.

I voted for Pale because I think his band wagon start (voting with me)  it is the second vote that is usually the start of a bandwagon on first day is suspicious.

Those are just my thoughts.

I will try and appeal to those with ugly avatars one last time. I have made replacements for those ghastly things you have been displaying below your username. Please use them, I don't like looking at your ugly ones.

The simplest explanation, like the one you just gave, helps. You don't need to provide an explanataion but it helps you avoid suspicion.

Ok,

Dasmos I appreciate all the very nice extra work to provide people with avatars, but just something feels odd about it.  It just feels like a big distraction from the game and perhaps from mafia.  I am beginning to suspect of you being Mafia.  You and Pale are on the top of my list of being the most suspicious people in the game.

Title: Re: Mafia XXXVI: Donkey Kong. Day 2. Mine Cart Madness.

That was last post about the avatars, I promise. I can do no more to help these people.

I am serious about my vote for pap though, especially after he made a post explaining why he voted for me (the whole avatar thing). I'm still doing the same thing now AND I voted for him and he hasn't voted for me today. He also mentioned in his post that he was going to let me off the hook (I'll let the whole "get" thing go, I'm sure he meant to say "let") today, but it's kill or be killed. Still no vote. It strikes me as odd is all. Also the whole Stogi voting for him out of the blue thing.

If Stogi gets voted out and turns out to be mafia, I daresay pap is too.

I'm not sure why I'm defending him, but keep in mind that Pap's still new to the game.  I wouldn't read too much into his choice of words.  I doubt he analyzes his words as closely as we do.

I'm going to throw a vote out there for Nickmitch.  He hasn't shown up yet and I don't like that.  He's an experienced player and it seems like he's trying to fly under the radar (again).

Wouldn't that be possible?  Write a program that routinely refreshes a web page, searching for a certain character string, and once that appears, it would set off an alarm?  It doesn't seem that farfetched, though you'd probably have to hire an exterminator to debug the thing.  I could probably take care of that step ;)

I think the real question we should ask ourselves is why is vudu trying to direct attention towards nickmitch in the first place?

Seems like a clear case of "Sting-and-fly" to me.

For now, un-vote Vudu, simply because he's calling forth names he doesn't expect to show up, in an attempt to cast suspicion on them.

Well, recall that vudu voted for Insanolord at the end to "prevent a tie."  It's definitely a good question to ask, since a tie would leave things in a definite townie's hands, after all. ;)  Preventing a tie would leave more mystery and lead to more mafia involvement.

I voted for Insanolord to prevent a tie.  Ties are bad.

Thatguy claims he's the Nullifer, and he told me in a PM that he wasn't even around last night to use his power!  If I hadn't stopped a possible tie we could have wound up with either two dead or no dead (not sure what the rules are in the event of a tie).

Pale's voting for me for a bullshit reason and I don't like it.  "I feel like a mafia member would do that if they were sure the person being voted for wasn't mafia."  What does that even mean?  It would be one thing if Dasmos was mafia, but we don't know that at this point in time.

Off the hook from myself. I admit I worded it wrong, but I was thinking of voting for you because of the whole icon thing. But then decided voting for that would be silly, so I took your icon and changed it. Even if you don't change your vote (its your vote you do whatever you want with it) at the very least you can enjoy a better icon.

I know blaming vudu for this is incredibly hypocritical as I'm the one who started the bandwagon, but still, I know I'm not mafia. =P

Well, I'll say this:  I still believe Vudu is in the mafia.  That said, I also believe Pale is in the mafia.  After the events of the first day, I had a feeling that the two parasites were probably latching on to Spak's vote choice for a bandwagon, and so I decided to place a hornet bug bomb in the room, to take out Vudu and his stinger.  Seems like people are more interested in removing the cockroach instead, so I'll put in a roach motel today, and maybe we'll try the bomb again tomorrow.  Also, I don't like this particular cockroach.  We're enemies for life... which should end soon (MWAHAHAHAHA)

vote Pale

LOL, what?  I have no idea what you're talking about.

You're crazy.  But you're voting Pale, so I guess I can't complain too much.  8)

Well, fleabag, I'm referring to how you decided you'd prevent the chance for a tie yesterday with your vote for Insanolord.  That seems kind of fishy given the nullifier role...

I'm having a hard time trying to figure out who to vote for. It seems everyone is accusing each other based on past experiences rather than actual suspicions of events happening NOW.

I have to think about this a little bit more...

Whatever--as it stood the nullifer could have created a tie, which would have done no one any good.  I was preventing any chance of that.  This is why people like nickmitch just sit back and don't participate.  It seems those who actively play the game get the most stones thrown at them.

Welcome!  You must be new.  ;)

Pale isn't a cockroach. That's mean! He's just trying to do what he needs to do to win, like any good player would.

After thinking about it I've decided to vote Pale. I know its joining a bandwagon but I have no idea who else to vote for and the day is ending.

Hopefully by tomorrow we have better suspects to vote against.

It is true that those that participate have the most stones cast at them.  But it is also true that those that don't participate are usually suspected of being Mafia as well...it just usually takes a few days.  The best strategy for Mafia players is to play the game, post regularly...but keep a low profile.  Then you are not suspect by being on either end of the spectrum.

I hope I am right about Pale, because if I am not I will eat a lot of crow for making a bad choice in votes...but I made my best educated guess.

Anyhow, I am guessing the day is about to end soon...or has it already ended?

The nullifier can't create a tie, bugger.
