New York City was decidedly beachy yesterday when Nintendo brought in a lot of sand and a tropical vibe to Times Square to commemorate the launch of Wii Sports Resort, which hits stores officially on Sunday.

Staff Writer Jared Rosenberg, Contributing Writer Lauren Lewandoski, and I went to the event and got our feet a little sandy, enjoyed being lei-d (well, except for Lauren), and even talked to Nintendo of America's Bill Trinen.

While that interview is still busily worked on so we can bring it to you as soon as we can, we have some pictures and a video of the island band playing the Super Mario Bros. theme.

I spotted someone on that video that used to be a part of the NWR staff. Mike Thomson, you will notice him at seconds 4 to 6.

Ah the old stompin' grounds. Wish I was up there still for NYC events like this, but alas.

Looks like it was a good time guys, glad you could all go.

Eerily similar event (albeit smaller and minus the outdoor sandy bit) was taking place yesterday at Birmingham city centre in the UK! Guess it's a world tour.
