Title: Nintendo screwed me. >:(
Post by: UncleBob on July 12, 2009, 12:47:28 PM
It's dead, Jim. :(
Gotta ship it in. $75 repair cost.
Le sigh.
I should at least get 75 Club Nintendo coins for the repair cost.

I'm evil because before opening this thread i sent unclebob a text message taunting him about his wii, asking if he wanted to play something online knowing he couldn't.

I can still play Mario Kart Double Dash online - who's with me?

$250 for New Wii. -$25 Employee Discount -$40 for the included Wii Remote -$20 for the included Nunchuk -$20 for the AC Adapter -$25 for Wii Sports -$10 for the Sensor Bar -$16 for the A/V cables -$9 for the stands/plates/foam tape
Basically, a brand new Wii would be $85 (all the prices above are the costs of items bought from Nintendo's online store). $75. :(

Sorry to hear it UncleBob... I had to send mine in a few months ago. It only took about 1 week for the shipping out and returning. Luckily i got my SD card back which i accidentally left in.

Do you know what was the problem with the Wii UncleBob?
Title: Re: My Wii died. :(
Post by: UncleBob on July 12, 2009, 02:09:01 PM
Well, it had the amber light on it when I went to turn it on. Went to green, made the chirpy sound and the fan kicked on - but no audio/video through the TV. Also, the Wii Remote wouldn't sync up when I tried to use it.
It'll eject discs just fine.
I checked all of the connections - even pulled out my composite cables and hooked it up to a different TV. Tried the 90 second reset.
When I hold down the power button, it'll power down as well.

Have you tried different cables?
Might be the cables.

He will. If there's one thing I can praise Nintendo for with the Wii, it's that they have a top-notch repair service. A few months after I got my Wii (a few years ago) the thing suddenly started making a troubling noise every time it ran a game, which I suspected was a problem with the fans. Fortunately, my Wii was still under warantee, and I literally got my Wii back all fixed and ready to go within a week. That's counting shipping on both ends (and note that I live on the other side of the country from Nintendo), and I didn't lose any data either (though I didn't take any chances on that and backed-up the data anyway).

Oh I know. I sent my Wii up to Nintendo twice and got it back in 4 days both times.
First one was for the Brawl disk problem and the second was because the Wii wouldn't read Wii disks.

When mine broke it had an issue reading all dual-layered disks, like Brawl

Not that I've heard of. Maybe Nintendo switched out that duct tape holding the two GameCubes together for a sturdier roll after those first 6 months. ;)
Honestly, I'm surprised considering all the problems I'm reading about your models that my only problem was a possible fan/drive noise issue.

I forgot to include in my problem list an incessant humming noise that even overpowered my TV volume.

Post by: UncleBob on July 12, 2009, 02:56:38 PM
Nope - it's hooked up to the main TV through the Component cables, but I tried it to a different TV with the composite cables. Also, since the Wii Remote won't sync, it tells me it's something else.
For the record, mine is a launch system as well.

That sounds like the issue I had: a loud whirring noise, similar to the one many people complained the GameCube made when you tried to play an Eternal Darkness FMV. For me, it just sounded like the bad fans on my nearby computer, which at the time were in really bad shape.

just adding my 2 cents.
my launch system was sent in twice and ready for a third (black pixels of death) but I learned to over look it as I am out of warranty and cant afford it. First problem with wii... wii sports bad disc, got new disc.. 2nd problem with wii, brawl problem, 3rd problem with wii, coulndt read games.. now the 4th is the pixels of death.
SHINY unlcebob shiny....
so yeah, this stinks. The wii is my favorite nintendo system for everything it can do.. Sadly though, it falls into nintendos NES hardware curse and is the worst built system to date. 8( seriously, black pixels of death because of overheating? really? REALLY???? sam ething happened to my friend who reviews games, except early EARLy on.. I had another friend whose wiimotes never synced up...
SO yeah, everyone I know who is core has had issues. now i am just waiting for that random lawsuit that comes out that forces nintendo to fix all Black pixels of death issues for free.
one day... one day..

What the hell is the problem!? You guys sound like 360 owners or something
Seriously. Do you guys leave your wii's on 24/7 or something? Or are you somehow blocking the lil fan vents? I've had my wii snice launch and i've given it some heavy play sessions from time to time, and its never given me a problem after all this time.

I will anxiously await hearing whether or not UB's data is in tact.
I use and enjoy Pokemon Ranch... but you can't back up your Ranch save file on SD card for some stupid reason. Therefore all of my pokemon are dependent on my Wii system memory.

I probably should have mentioned this earlier, but when I talked to the Nintendo Rep about getting a repair done, I mentioned how long I've been with the Nintendo.com site and all the things I have registered over the years. Because of that he gave me a discount on my repair even though I was waaay outside of a warranty.
With your Nintendo history, I'm sure you could have worked out something similar or even better than the deal I got.

How do you store your Wii? I don't keep mine in the stand and lay it flat on a hard surface and never had any problems. I'm wondering if keeping it in a 'tower' position may encourage system failures due to fan blockage/placement and what-not.

Not to mention how putting a disk spinner on its side like that defies the laws of physics.

I have to keep my Wii in the "tower" formation, just because it's the only way the damn thing will fit on top of the DVD player along with my PS3 (yes yes, I know...the irony. The DVD player was a gift and I can't get rid of it without hurting the feelings of the people who gave it to me.). And the PS3's too tall in its own "tower" formation to fit in the entertainment center. If that means the Wii's more likely to break so be it...I'd rather have my "cheap" system break than my expensive PS3. Besides, lately my Wii hasn't seen much usage lately anyway so I doubt it's been that badly damaged left as it is off most of the time.

Wow, mine has done the same thing since then and it's still rocking. Got a back-up Wii we got free with out TV though, so I won't be without one for long.

It doesn't defy anything, the disc gets locked into place on both sides of the center, it's no different then if it were laying flat.

When a disk is spinning vertically, the force of gravity isn't evenly distributed across the disk thereby causing more strain on the spinner.

Two things..
First, I sent the system out Monday via Priority Mail and they haven't received it yet. It does have to travel out to California (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auAcYMArTLM), so maybe I'm just panicking for no reason.
Second, Nintendo isn't even repairing my system! Some other company (http://www.minilec.com/) is going to violate my Wii. I don't think I like this. :(

$75 bucks. Whoopie. Try $150+ sales tax for PS3 repairs (if you didn't know the blu-ray drives die and sony chargers a flat fee now even though you can buy the drive for $50 and install it yourself).
Also sony only has a 90day policy on repairs. Mine was fixed and died again 108 days after being repaired.
Now that suxed!@^(U(%

I seem to remember Nintendo warning me quite explicitly when I sent my Wii in for repairs that they could need to mess with saved data, so to be sure to back mine up. So I did, backing all the data onto my SD card. It turned that I didn't need to do that for what they ended up doing, but it was still the smart thing to do.
Sorry to hear about your data loss, bob, but I get the feeling they probably warned you to backup your data. If they didn't, I'm pretty sure we did. If you didn't backup your data, well...you were warned.

There was no way to back up my saved data when I couldn't turn the system on.

$75.

Nintendo's repair service has really gone to crap recently, just be glade you didn't have homebrew installed...
Quote
From: (deleted) Date: 2009/02/11 Subject: Handling of modified Wii
Dear Sirs,
please be informed about the following change, it is effective from start of February on. Sorry for my late notice as I have been sick. This change is confirmed by NOE President.
Whenever you get a console for Repairs and find a Homebrew channel or any other not official Nintendo or unauthorized software (Backup Channel, Gecko OS, etc). on it, this repair is out of warranty. If the defect is related to the modification or not, is of no interest for us, anytime we find unauthorized software, it is out of warranty.
The consumer needs to be informed about this and needs to agree that in case we repair the product he will lose this unauthorized content and get an updated Wii Product back. If the consumer do not agree, you shall not repair and send the product back.
Legal is preparing the letter which you can send to the consumer. Please note the price will be higher for such a Repair as well, as soon as it is fixed. Approx 18O€-21O€ [$250-$300], but please wait for our documents. For the current situation you can use a price of 120€ [$170] for such kind of issues.
We might change the warranty wording as well to make it more clear, even if the current one is enough. In addition yes we are aware of a small legal risk to be claimed on this in the court, but NOE more than willing to take the risk. We need to stop the Homebrew-Channel now.
Additional to this we checked with NCL to get a better Check-Disc to make your work more efficient and easier. (deleted) will keep you updated on this. Please contact him as well if you need more discs of version 1, as EVERY Wii returned for repairs needs to be checked. Please note the Ver.1 is not as good as expected so manual check might be needed. (deleted) will share more info on this tomorrow.
(deleted) will share more information about this topic at the coming DSi training and show you some samples, as we want to use this meeting opportunity even if it is not DSi related. Please let me know if you have further questions? Please inform your team members accordingly.
Thanks a lot for your understanding and support. Best Regards (deleted)
There's some data you can't back up. Any save data that uses WFC is stuck to the Wii. So no Brawl, no Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, etc.
Yup. All my unlocked Brawl stuff. My Animal Crossing file. All my Mario Kart stuff I'd unlocked. My Wii Sports and Wii Fit records, along with my Tanks file from Wii Play.
All of my Miis - all of the ones I created along with all the ones everyone sent me. I'm sure my Wii system's Friend Code has probably been changed, and I know all my individual on-line games would have changed.
My Pokémon Snap photos. All of my message board messages. My Mii photos from the Check Mii Out Channel. My stats from the Everybody Votes Channel.
*poof*.
For $75.

Title: Re: Nintendo screwed me. >:(
Post by: UncleBob on July 25, 2009, 02:02:09 AM
Nope - it's mine. It pulled up my Wii Shop account and has some black scratches on the casing that has been there for almost as long as I've had it (remember them on there shortly after I got it and wondering how they got there...).

Title: Re: Nintendo screwed me. >:(
Post by: UncleBob on July 25, 2009, 02:07:19 AM
It has a different serial number - I noticed that as soon as I got it back - which is odd. But it's definitively my casing and the fact it pulled up my Wii Shop Channel without any prompting from me, I'm guessing they just assigned it a new SN?
Title: Re: Nintendo screwed me. >:(
Post by: UncleBob on July 25, 2009, 03:01:16 AM
Here's something odd. The Metroid Prime Preview Channel, the Wii Speak Channel and the Nintendo Channel that I had copied to my SD card will launch from my SD card - while nothing else will.
It leads me to believe that there's some kind of header-type thing attached to the various programs that tell them to only run on Wii X (or, in the case of these three, to run on any Wii.). How odd.

Shitty.
I've sent my Wii back to Nintendo twice. Both times it came back with all my save data in tact as well as all my Miis (even the ones in the Mii Parade).
My heart goes out to you. :(
Do you have a new system code? The first time I got my Wii repaired it came back with the same system code, but the second time I got a new one.
Are your contacts still available?
Title: Re: Nintendo screwed me. >:(
Post by: UncleBob on July 25, 2009, 11:24:39 AM
New code. I also assume that since my Wii has a new code and all of my saves were deleted, each individual game will have a new code as well.
Title: Re: Nintendo screwed me. >:(
Post by: vudu on July 25, 2009, 11:32:38 AM
Your games will have new codes because you'll have to create new save files, but the new system code shouldn't matter.
Title: Re: Nintendo screwed me. >:(
Post by: UncleBob on July 25, 2009, 11:38:25 AM
Are you sure? I know, on the DS, if I take a game with a Friend Code generated for one system and try to play it (online) on another system, it won't let me unless I opt to clear the old account and create a new one. If I were to (somehow) copy your Brawl file onto my Wii, would I have your Brawl Friend Code?

If your Wii was really as "dead" as you say it was, maybe the Wii's flash memory was was corrupted or something and couldn't be recovered. I have a feeling that Nintendo probably makes an effort to maintain the data of the Wiis sent back to them, but perhaps it just couldn't be saved in this case?

If that's the case, then it's somewhat understandable. However: A simple note telling me "Sorry, but.." would have gone a long, long way. Turning on my system and *surprise*... not so cool. Since the break down of flash memory isn't something I can prevent - and there's no way the flash memory should have gone out with normal usage this quickly - I shouldn't have been charged the full $75.
So are you going to send the Wii back and/or send an extreme bitching email/phone call/pigeon?
e-Mails with crazy demands that will go no where. But what else is there to do?
Ask for a detailed explanation as to what exactly happened to your Wii (even if you know the reason), and if it's not related then where is your save files. I'm no expert but i'm assuming all the innards of the Wii are connected to a single board so if it didn't switch on they just lifted the whole thing out and replaced it. And then ask them to grovel and apologise repeatedly for 'testing' their most precious collector.

I agree with Plugabugz. Try and find out what happened. They should have carried all the data over for you from one system to the other.
That is ridiculous. If mine goes south I'm not letting a 3rd party look at it. I'm going to tell Nintendo they themselves have to fix it or no deal. I don't care if it costs more I'll pay the extra shipping and stuff.

They probably found a picture of your man-nipple on the Wii Message Board and deleted it the hard way.

This is why I keep a perfect dump of my Wii flash memory (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/BootMii)
However: Since the break down of flash memory isn't something I can prevent - and there's no way the flash memory should have gone out with normal usage this quickly - I shouldn't have been charged the full $75.
Nope - it's mine. It pulled up my Wii Shop account and has some black scratches on the casing that has been there for almost as long as I've had it (remember them on there shortly after I got it and wondering how they got there...).
Constantly rewriting the flash memory is bound to make it go bad quickly. This is why the SD channel is stupid.
And keep in mind you got a new motherboard with a new GPU/CPU/SPU/NAND/bluetooth/wifi and everything else that's soldered to it for $75.
How odd.
That is extremely weird. Every wii ticket (http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Ticket) should be unique to that Wii....

I think those are generic channels that don't need signing, same with Weather, Mii Channel, etc.

My whole family is cursed by cankles, but somehow over the past few years, I've managed to get rid of mine. My two brothers and two sisters...no so much. I give credit to the double bass adapter in Rock Band 2.

I've been playing a bit of phone tag with someone from Nintendo today. Can't seem to catch one another.

If I ever visit either of you then I'll tag you with a little something which rhymes with "laser" and begins with a "T"...
Kinky.

Talked with someone from Nintendo today. Got nothing useful - except he did say he was going to pass on a suggestion I made (which I'll talk about in a post later). I'm sure nothing will come from it, but, at least I tried.
Sucks to be me.
What happens if someone who has hacked their Wii sends me their Brawl file? Will I even be able to copy it over to my system?

You tell them to refund your money because they didn't say you would lose your saves.

To be fair, I never specifically asked for a refund. While it would have been nice (and then I could buy Wii Sports Resort), it wouldn't have replaced my save data and wouldn't prevent this from happening again.

I'm tempted to start a collection fund on the forums for that plane ticket since you said you would come visit me if I paid the way. Plus I thought I wouldn't get tased unless I misbehaved?
UncleBob, are you going to post that suggestion later today? I'm wondering if it is something that will be able to possibly recover your data. Like maybe the old board with the memory on it could be tracked down and recovered. If they could find it I think they should let you have it to send to a data recovery center if you desired.

No, nothing like that. I'm sure that'd be near impossible (the tracking-down part) and far too expensive for my tastes. My data is gone. :(

So do the next best thing. Demand an apology. Demand they grovel. Demand Reggie come to your house barefoot and explain his insolence.

Stop taking what I say in a context you know I don't mean.
I don't know you don't mean it that way. I can't read your thoughts. I'm just pointing in between the lines and letting others make their own judgements. What actually reads there is none of my business its between you and Stratos

Well, here's a blast from the past... I think my Wii is dead again.
I came home today and had two messages waiting for me. Telltale Games gifted me episodes 4 and 5 of Tales of Monkey Island. Dunno why - I entered some contest some time ago and won Episode 3... Guess I just extra-won or something.
Anyway, I tried connecting to the Wii Shop to download my gifts - the system sets at the Wii Shop loading screen (the spinning circle) *forever*. I have to actually hold in the power button on the Wii in order to do anything. So, I went in to test my connection settings. It was set to wireless, and it tests okay. If I switch the connection over to the wired connection, I get an error message as soon as I hit the test button.
Oddly enough, I'm not getting a link light on the network cable either. I tried testing the other two items I've got plugged in via USB; Wii Speak - channel won't load and the Logitech Wii Wireless Keyboard - doesn't respond.
My other two Wiis seem to connect just fine.
Anywhoo, I'm going to try it again tomorrow - and if that doesn't work, I guess I'll be calling Nintendo again. :(

Well, I tried again tonight - and tried a few different things - no luck. My Red and Black Wiis connect just fine (downloaded the latest demos onto them) - but nothing from the White Wii. Guess I'll be calling Nintendo tomorrow. :(

Ugh. Sorry, UB. I hope it turns out to be a simple fix, and that it doesn't cause as much heartburn this time.
As an aside, I will say that episodes 4 & 5 make ToMI worth the time to play, if only because those episodes kind of turn the existing Monkey Island mythos on its head in a very interesting way. I have the PC version, though, and I only imagine that the audio compression that plagued the first two episodes have continued through each Wii Ware installment. Too bad, really...ToMI was my favorite Tell Tale series to date, though Back to the Future is starting to run a close second.

That sucks.
I remember my GC almost died a while back. It starting smoking and making weird whirring noises.
That was back when the GC was somewhat popular.

Great news! It works! I had to unplug my Rock Band USB hub and re-setup my wired network, but everything's working fine now (well, except the USB hub... I guess it's shot...).

That makes sense. The WiFi chipset probably runs off of the same 5v line that the USB ports do (they do on the PS3 too), I would guess there's just a short or something in that USB hub, but they're like $1 anyway so it's probably not worth cracking open.
