It's always fun to bring in the original cast members, and nobody is more original than Mike "StrikerObi" Sklens, the co-founder of RFN. It's been over a year since he graced the show, and it seems he hasn't played any Wii or DS games in that time. But we're going to do something about that, aren't we? Three-fifths of us have been playing The Conduit, so there's plenty more chatter there. Jonny loves Swords & Soldiers from WiiWare, and Greg is going all mainstream with Guitar Hero and Tiger Woods.

After the break (sponsored by Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box), we round up several recent news stories. You'll hear us discuss the Metroid Prime Trilogy package, XSEED and the challenge of selling Retro Game Challenge, the new Final Fantasy for DS, Sega's commitment to mature games on Wii, GTA Chinatown Wars branching out to other systems, and bizarre GameStop bundles. Finally, James rips into a new rant about the Grease video games, but can the less masculine cast members defuse the criticism?

You need to fix the .mp3 link.  It currently links to last week's episode.   ;)

Ed: Whoops! Fixed now. :-)

I just saw this great new Jason Ricci video on YouTube, if anyone wants to get a quick introduction to his music. This particular song (one of his shortest) is used for two different interludes used on RFN.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doiowM_tLJc

There are many, many videos of Jason (both alone and with full band) on YouTube if you need more.

Yay new episode! Downloading now! From the description looks like a lot of good topics! And talk of The Conduit is good to me!

Wii Speak is a lot better if people would put it right next to them or use headphones.

There is a major downgrade in graphics in any online game. Just look.... The only big change is a few of the fancy effects are gone. I don't notice it all that much.

And James what is your Conduit FC?

There are still lighting effects in online, though.  When you're coming around a corner you can tell if there are people there because you can see the light from their guns firing.

The biggest thing taken out is the blur when reloading.

I turn that off anyway, I don't like it at all.

Just Finished listening... Great show guys, I really enjoyed the triumphant return of Mike, plus all of the Gamestop rage

I liked it. It's a nice effect.

I forgot it was Sunday until I wandered here and saw the new thread. Got something to listen to tonight.

I agree . It just makes it harder to stay alive. In tense situations the blur can cause the difference between life and death.

I think the graphics are downgraded in multiplayer but it's not that much. Johnny is acting like this game looks worse than Goldeneye : Rogue Agent on the DS when you play online.

Great to hear Mike Sklens back on the podcast, especially with the line of the show: "This game is the one that I want."

Great show guys, enjoyed listening to it!  I particularly enjoyed the talk about Metroid Prime Trilogy, which will be a day one purchase for me, although I own and have beaten all three already.  I can't wait to reply Prime and Echoes with the new controls, maybe I should start off on the hard mode this time, if I can  ;)

Any feedback on the Luke/Layton sketch? It made me laugh while writing it and playing it back, but it's more important that listeners enjoyed it.

It was good... commercials being back just makes the show better. Sure music interludes are nice, but a commercial gives the show that more comedic flare... which is always appreciated

You're too kind when speaking of us forum members as opponents. Thanks for the complements.

I don't notice much of a downgrade in graphics for multi. Sure, it lost a lot of the special effects, but they are still nice.

I liked the commercial but thought it might have gone on a bit too long.

The twist at the end made me laugh out loud.

I love his Luke impersonation.

Also, if James has The Conduit, where is his FC? I want to play with him too.

You (forgot the name) pointed out how the Wii controls would allow you to target large numbers of enemies but The Conduit doesn't utilize that. Onslaught uses it, fairly large numbers of enemies and you have to shoot their weak points to kill them quickly.

I also want to say I am glad to have the commercials! I have missed those!

Where is James FC?

If I ever get hired by NWR, and you get review copies of the Grease games, I want those just so I can slam them mercilessly. How are they going to get motion controls & the mic working at the same time?

Does anyone else think that the DS game is just a touch-screen enabled point & click version of the movie?

Grease DS could be a spiritual sequel to Elite Beat Agents (and Horse Life).

James has gone through half a dozen friend codes already, thanks to profile shenanigans. I think he's settled on one now, so maybe he'll post it soon.

I think Luke impersonations should be mandatory for your Conduit banter. Nothings funnier than getting shot in the face and mocked by your Luke voice :D

Personally, I didn't care for it.  I've never been a fan of the sketch commercials.  They seem juvenile and funnier for the person performing the skit than for the listeners.

So my fiancee wife was listening to RFN for the first time ever as I was listening to this episode in the car with her.  She was actually enjoying it quite a bit, but that layton sketch TOTALLY turned her off to the whole thing.

Not that she's a standard listener by any means, but you know.

I guess it turned out to be more controversial than I expected. Is it because of the language? I think it's less offensive in that respect than how we usually talk on the show.

I'm going to take a guess it was more the subject material that bothered people. It did feel like a glorified penis joke. I loved the voice work, but I just didn't find the subject matter/punchline terribly funny myself.
Title: Re: Radio Free Nintendo: Episode 152
Post by: vudu on July 15, 2009, 06:53:39 PM
Generally speaking, it's not the subject matter that offends me.  It's just that the jokes tend to fall flat.  I hate Brufus.  I'm not a huge Sweet Pete fan either.  The jokes generally boil down to crew members talking into the microphone in a funny voice.

Sorry if my criticism sounds harsh.  I'm not trying to be rude.

It was definitely the subject matter that offended her.  She isn't big on vulgarity, but letting one slip here and there doesn't bother her.

But given her aversion to vulgarity, she didn't like James at all and thought Greg was really good. =P

More proof that comedy is hard.

I thought the skit was funny, although it seemed kind of like a one-note joke. That was probably what you were going for, though. Still, I can see why some people would be bothered by it.

I'm glad to see Jonny and I were on the same page with the whole Diabolical "Box" thing. Call me childish (I know I am) but I find stupid stuff like that hilarious.

I'm also glad to see Layton had some good advice for Luke; however, we all know that Layton must not be too interested in that which he gave advice, considering he pals around with a pre-teen boy...
