Title: Modern Warfare 2
Post by: NWR_Lindy on May 26, 2009, 01:21:12 PM
The first trailer elicited a shrug from yours truly, but the second trailer made me pre-order immediately.

Holy crap!

As of right now I don't have any pressing plans in November. I'll probably pick it up. I wonder how many people will be confused with it not having the Call of Duty title on it.

It looks fucking incredible. Seems like it'll be even more story-driven, too. I like how they're making it more of a real franchise, as opposed to a "WW2 game". Yes, I know it's not WW2 anymore.

It is hard for me to get excited for any CoD game anymore considering I've played every game in the series (and beaten them) besides World at War. Talk about a series that does basically the same thing all the time but in different scenarios. Then again I still find the series fun, so we'll see.

Modern Warfare really surprised me.  I ignored the CoD series altogether, only buying CoD4 after it got rave reviews everywhere.  I'm actually even jaded about this one, but I can't deny that it's going to be incredible.

Well CoD4 as a first experience to the series is amazing, it is just after so many iterations previous it wasn't that much different besides the setting. It has always been a cinematic game (And the best WWII series).

What happened to Medal of Honor?  EA has been SLACKING.

What happened to Medal of Honor?  EA has been SLACKING.

MoH:Heroes 2 for Wii had great controls but dull gameplay, the PS3 and 360 MoH was meh.

What would truly be epic is if they included an option to play in 3rd person.

But we could've had MEDAL OF HONOR: HEROES 5: WWII IS COOL AGAIN: ITALIAN ASSAULT by now.  My point was EA is failing to meet their quota and the standards they raised last cycle.  Are they so strapped by H.ighly D.isappointing development?

Heroes 2 was a PSP port. But the 1 player was soo dissapointing compared to other MoH games.  However the controls were good, and the online was fair I would say.

This trailer just made me wish it was for the Wii; not only for the superior aiming, but for M+ melee attacks.

Better late than never, but my best friend recently loaned me his copy of Modern Warfare 2 for the PS3.  I just completed the mission where you have to fight house-to-house in Virgina against waves of Russian soldiers, and so far I really don't like this game all that much.  The singleplayer campaign seems to be expertly scripted but horrendously designed as a game.  You'll walk 2 steps forward at any given time and BANG!  DEAD!  You'll reload on the next checkpoint, walk another 2 steps forward and BANG!  DEAD!  And all this repeats ad nauseum until you can find the jerk you can't see 30 feet away that you can't see because everything in this game is shaded brown so it all blends in.  There's a lot of really well-done voice work in this game, but you can't appreciate it since 99.9% of the time it always sounds like this: "RAMIREZGETTOTHE*BLAST*MANDOWNMANDOWN*RATATAT*COMINGFROMTHELEFT*BLAST**BLAST*LET'SMOVEMOVEMOVE!"  It's such a cacauphony of noise that all you can do is just follow the white dot around you with the big "FOLLOW" tag on them and hope for the best.  Realistic?  Perhaps, but if I wanted "realism" in my First-Person Shooter experience, I'd enlist in the military.

On the flip side, there are some fun early stages, such as the level where you have to fight off Russian soldiers determined to storm your constantly-shifting defensive position at the Burger King.  I just wish that the moments of fun weren't so surrounded by moments of frustration, because there's a lot of potential fun going on here.

Man it up, broodwars :D

I beat the game on the highest difficulty setting, and it was a lot easier than the first Modern Warfare. I can't get past the damn ferris wheel. How am I supposed to carry a dude without gettig shot at point blank range?

The co-op levels in MW2 are awesome. I love the house one, where you start in the boat house and make your way around the yard. Provides great practice for getting head shots on Juggernauts.

Not sure where all the "take 2 steps and die" stuff comes from, and there are certainly more colors than brown in this game...
...bustin98, there's a trick to that level - just run the **** away from the ferris wheel and go back into the alley areas between the buildings and find a corner. Just stay there and kill enemies from a distance, and when it's just about time to take off, run to the chopper and get on it.

You have to have what's his face with you. I had no problem hopping on the copter, just can't live long enough to grab him and then hop on.

Someone who doesn't give a damn about online multiplayer, especially competitive multiplayer.  I play my games for the stories, and you can only get that in MW2 with the SP mode.

Oh, and btw I completing the SP campaign last night.  Meh, it was ok.  A lot of great set-piece events but some very frustrating respawns.

Seriosuly that's like saying you would play Smash Bros. for the SP. Sure it's there, but it's probably never going to be great.

You can play multiplayer in Smash Bros. with only one player and 3 bots, so you can enjoy all aspects of the game singleplayer if you need to.  I don't believe you can play Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer offline with bots.

Eh, you're right, you can't. You will be able to in Black Ops though and that's going to have a **** singleplayer too!

I can't comment on recent CoD games, but I really enjoyed the single player in Call of Duty 2 (the last one I played). Multiplayer is a nice bonus, but most games should focus on singe player first. If a game is gonna have a big focus on multiplayer, it should have bots in it (which is why I loved that Nintendo finally put them in on Mario Kart DS).

I really enjoyed the single player in COD2, MW, WAW and MW2 (never played COD or COD3 single player). I really liked the story in MW2, especially since it's a true sequel to MW.

Not at all. The SP campaigns in CoD games are some of the main aspects of the game. In Smash Bros SP is just thrown in as a gimmick, if that but in CoD that's the main game many people see.

MW2 comes to life with the Hardcore modes. It's basically the most realistic military simulator (other than the perks). There is hardly anything more rewarding then taking down an entire team using nothing but a knife and pistol.

Yeah, its real realistic to have a cluster of 10 year olds huddled together in a corner around a tactical insertion doing headshots on each other and then calling in a tactical nuke. Yeah, that's just like real life.

/sarcasm

That's the reason I hate the game and think WaW is far superior. WaW doesn't have nukes, and even if it did there aren't tactical insertions so cheating is far more difficult. WaW is all about skill, MW2 is just 10 year old noobtoobers and boosters.

Just cuz you suck, doesn't mean the game does.

How does other people boosting make me suck? In my opinion, if you boost you suck. The fact you defend them suggests you probably do it yourself. I don't need to.

ETA: And btw, Commando teleporting is not realistic either. You see someone rush at you with a knife and you shoot them but they teleport right through the bullets due to a glitch in how the game was made. How the hell is that realistic? But of course, you said you like to knife people so I'm sure its a sweet deal for you, but just like the noobtubers and the nuke boosters it completely ruins the realism of the game.

Missed the part where he said "It's basically the most realistic military simulator (other than the perks)", eh?

I think playing with boosters is fun, once I know there are boosters about I try and gun them down as much as possible. It's funny hearing them scream over the mic or getting a message full abuse from them.

I agree it is a lot of fun to kill boosters, and its also very easy to do. Since they all cluster together its easy to get double or triple kills, and they are too busy trying to boost on each other to really notice you sneak up on them. But sometimes you don't notice there are boosters in a game until its too late and then a nuke gets dropped... I absolutely hate that.

Fortunately, from what I've heard Treyarch is going to severely crack down on boosting in Black Ops and will have teams going through games looking for cheaters. It will also be possible to record videos of cheaters and send that in as proof and then get people banned for it. So hopefully Black Ops will be less of a cheat fest and a more enjoyable experience.

Lolwut.

No. If you want realism go play ArmA 2. Even on hardcore MW2 is still extremely arcadey. Plus from what I heard teamwork is THICK in ArmA, people looking for realistic warfare seem to be much more willing to work in a team. Oh and there's no problem with explosives in that game, although the explosions are huge and powerful the realistic engagement ranges mean the explosiopns still cover only a tiny fraction of the current combat area.

A friend told me about a game called Red Orchestra on the PC that he says makes COD look like professional wrestling (in terms of realism).

I can't envision a realistic combat scenario in which one man takes down an entire group of armed enemy combatants with nothing but a knife and pistol.

Games like Operation Flashpoint DR and ArmA 2 definitely approach realism much more so than Modern Warfare.

One thing about Arma is that cover and stuff isn't placed where some map maker thought it would be fun but where the satellite photos showed it. There are no convenient chest high walls scattered around, moving along a city street could mean exposing yourself fully with the next cover 10-20 meters away. You also have to pay attention to things like not standing out from your background, standing on top of a hill will make you visible like a lighthouse, forests are your friend.

Oh and it's the only game I played where running a civilian car into a tree will cripple or kill you.
