Title: Red Steel 2 Will Require Wii MotionPlus
Post by: Flames_of_chaos on May 12, 2009, 11:44:51 AM
Ubisoft has confirmed that the game will require Nintendo's latest peripheral.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=18421

One of the very first details about Ubisoft's Red Steel sequel was that it supports Wii MotionPlus. This morning, Ubisoft has confirmed to Edge that the Wii MotionPlus is mandatory in order to play the game.

In the latest Nintendo Power issue, the game's creative director, Jason Vandenberghe,  said in an interview, "I would love to say to you that it'll be compatible with just a regular controller, but the gameplay simply isn't there without MotionPlus. That core experience just isn't there without it."

In the same interview, Vandenberghe revealed that the company is taking a huge risk making this decision, since Ubisoft can't predict the penetration rate of the Wii MotionPlus and can only assume that it will be high.

Might as well have a bundle option for every game that requires Wii motionPlus.

Good news because I want to see games built around Wii motion plus just not "Well we have that option if you want it".

Nintendo's going to need a Motion+ pack-in.  Though knowing them it will be Wii Sports Resort.  Sounds like an okay idea in theory but is that really the same market as Red Steel 2?  Nintendo ideally needs a non-game and a core game that comes with Motion+.  Two different audiences need two different options.  And anyone who buys both will have two which is fine since each remote needs its own.

Funny I thought many people here and elsewhere enjoyed games like Wii Sports. Sounds like they will end falling into the same "market" anyway. Then again this is retreading the tired and asinine core vs casual argument.

They have WSR, TW2010 & Red Steel
thats 3 different games from 3 different publishers for 3 different targets which equals 3 different pack-ins & 3 remotes covered

All we need is a 4th game to pack M+ into from a different publisher, different game type aimed at a different type of gamer and we are all set.

After 2.5yrs my mom just discovered Baseball and Golf on WiiSports. She still plays WiiPlay and occasionally play WiiFit. WSR should be right up her alley, but I'm gonna try and get her into GST & TW2010 since she loves tennis & likes golf.

By the way I'm looking forward to WSR unlike so many other people here. Nintendo is gonna set the standard for what is expected out of M+ functionality & you know htey are gonna make sure they do it right. It should be fun.

I think Nintendo might work out a bundle for Red Steel 2, especially if its required.

Good. Ubisoft does knowthey put themselves in a box. The controls in Red Steel were TERRIBLE so making it mandatory use WM+ people are going to expect great things.

I'm fairly confident Nintendo will package the Wii Motion plus with Red Steel . 4 games packed in is enough.

Yeah I expect Ubisoft to offer a version with Wii Motion Plus even if it will be $60.

Its only 4 games if you count GST in Europe along with TW2010 in US, other wise i don't think any region is getting more than 3 M+ bundles.

And I read somewhere a while ago that since RS2 required M+, Nintendo was letting them bundle it in.

Any retailer in their right mind will over a bundle if it isn't standard.

I am surprised, but happy. The only way to really force people to adopt something is to require it. Anybody who wants to play Red Steel 2 will have to get Wii MotionPlus.

I hope the Wii MotionPlus support ramps up. So far we have Virtual Tennis 09, Grand Slam Tennis, Tiger Woods 10, Wii Sports Resort, and now Red Steel 2. I have a feeling E3 will have some nice Wii news.

I'm hoping E3 reveals atleast 5 more M+ games from 3rd party publishers and 2-3 more from Nintendo themselves.
Nintendo has been working on M+ for atleast 2 years now so WSR can't be the only thing they have going & in playable/showable form.
3rd parties have had a little less than a year to get some ideas in showable form in atleast.

My thoughts exactly.  And was anyone really insulting Wii Sports or Resort?  I don't understand the defensiveness over these games.  Wii Sports is already the highest selling game of all time -- it doesn't need to be defended by anyone.  I've never met anyone who doesn't enjoy it at least somewhat.  I haven't played it in ages, but it's clearly one of the best games on Wii.  My concern is more about the sub-standard copycat games that followed.

Any criticism of Resort is premature, considering that we know little about it (only three games, and they promised at least ten in all), and it hasn't been shown at all in nearly a year.  Make no mistake, this is the biggest game of the year for Nintendo.

Wiisports Resort is a guaranteed Mullti-Million Seller. The game was literally a system seller for a majority of owners, if 3rd party publishers don't support Wii Motion Plus because they are surprised by the success of Wii Sports Resort they are morons.

Resort will be the PREMIERE murder simulator this summer.

Many more living room damages and bystander injuries will occur thanks to budding weekend Jedis.

Red Steak 2 has a lot to live up to.

I really hope this is the year of MotionPlus at E3.
It will be great to have Nintendo's booth filled with games featuring perfect 1:1 virtual controls while Sony and MS are most likely deputing their pathetic gimmicky motion controllers which, at best, will be as impressive as the original Wii-mote which be obsolete at that point.

I think bundling should depend on how many games have already been bundled with the WMP by the time RS2 comes out (obviously a bundle would be sold in addition too the standalone game), if it's reasonable to expect everyone to have a WMP by then a bundle might just clutter the shelves.

But they want everyone to have more than just one M+ per Wii console out there.
They want the market to be flooded with these things so that 3rd parties have no worries when it comes to supporting the peripheral.
M+ is Nintendo's ace up the sleeve because it doesn't take much for them to add on but it takes a market splitting peripheral for the competition to match.

Besides they gotta sell as many of those things as possible now so that they can double dip in your pocket later when they release the Wiimote+ with M+ already built in. Its sound business strategy.

MotionPlus bundling will probably drop off after the holiday season.  It makes sense to bundle it with several games up through the end of the year.

This Lotion Puss thing is waaay better than the Expansion Pack.

Wii has a lot of customers, but there's still room for lots more.  This is the ticket to absorbing all those fringe self-proclaimed non-casuals.  Only then will Wii have succeeded in becoming everyone's 2nd Console.

I still think that a bundle will be required, since a company can't assume that each potential buyer will have the accessory. In Japan, the Monster Hunter G starter pack which includes a Classic Controller is the top selling SKU since the game requires a classic controller. Another fun Japan fact was when Smash Bros Brawl came out, there was a spike in demand for GameCube controllers.

Wii Sports is already the highest selling game of all time

No offense but isn't that a complete BULL**** stat since the game is a mandatory purchase for every Wii owner outside of Japan?  Super Mario Bros. gets a lot of praise for a similar "accomplishment".  If I can't choose not to get it then the sales figures ulitmately mean completely NOTHING.

To stay on topic though I'll note that it is good that someone is taking the plunge and trying to make full use of M+ and not just let it be a feature.  Of course this is Ubisoft and its Red Steel so I'm not expecting this to be anything worthwhile.  But if M+ is going to amount to anything it has to be considered as standard as the remote itself.  Hopefully Nintendo will be smart enough to start including it with the remote, but they probably won't.  And they'll probably get away with that too.  But it has to start coming with every Wii though.  THAT is a given.

I'm hoping, not expecting but hoping, that M+ reveals the true potential of the remote.  I hope Nintendo releases games that use it that makes everyone wonder how we ever made games without it.  Right now the remote is FAR from that.  But if this could be the true "new standard" that would be really cool.

That's really cool to know.  I don't care at all about Monster Hunter G but if it's the cash cow in Japan everyone says it is this is pretty good news.  I think the classic controller is grossly underused and we get a lot of crappy waggle because of that.  But this could set the trend of games that require the classic controller and then we get games using the control option that suits them BEST instead of shoehorning everything into the remote regardless of whether it makes sense to or not.  Widespread classic controller penetration could mean an end to waggle.

Yes I do know. If a consumer wants a game that requires an accessory, that consumer will first check out if they can buy the game with that accessory  for a cheaper price. What would you prefer Red Steel 2 w/ Wii MotionPlus for $60 or Red Steel 2 for $50 and Wii MotionPlus for $20 -$25 (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=74505)?

Sorry, but the gaming 'media' has a agenda to uphold to. It's better to take what they say with a grain of salt.

I'm still bitter that Super Mario Galaxy didn't receive 10s from the media when it deserves it. I'm just an asshole that way. >/

So what is this agenda and how does it manifest in review scores?  Would you say the average Wii game has a score that's 5% lower than it ought to be? 10%?
