Title: PREVIEWS: Klonoa
Post by: NWR_Neal on April 30, 2009, 05:26:54 AM
The acclaimed game gets a graphical facelift, but doesn't seem to change the game's winning formula.

Klonoa, the remake of the critically-acclaimed PlayStation game originally released in 1998, is finally coming to North America after it was released in Japan late last year.  The game is heralded as one of the best platformers ever made and the Wii remake does little to change the original game, only augmenting it with new material.

The story is simple; Klonoa and his friend Hewpoe, the ring spirit, go to investigate a crash near their home in Phantomile, a world created by everyone's dreams. This leads the pair on an adventure that involves numerous interactions with magical creatures and villains.

The graphics are completely redesigned and optimized for the Wii and bring the charming characters to life in 14 colorful levels. The Wii remake will also feature the all new Reverse Mode as well as multiple control options.

Players can choose from Wii Remote and Nunchuk, Wii Remote only, Classic Controller, and the GameCube controller. In the Wii Remote and Nunchuk option, players can take advantage of motion controls by using the Wii Remote for Klonoa's Wind Bullet and the Nunchuk to activate a whirlwind that spins and slows enemies.

Klonoa will retail for $30 when it comes out on May 5.

I never even played any of the games in the series, so I'm excited.

I'm with you on this one, GP. I've only heard of how fantastic this game is supposed to be. I'm excited to see if it lives up to all this hype.

This might be a dreaded "wiimake", but 30 bucks for a solid remake makes it a must buy.

Yeah 30 bucks is pretty amazing for a remake that looks EXTREMELY polished.

I've played a bit of this on my Japanese Wii. I plan to post my thoughts this weekend. I like it, and $30 is the right price point given its brevity.

So is this a "2d in 3d" game?  It kinda looks like it from the screenshots...

[As in, 3d rendering and worlds, but movement almost always along a single path determined by the game?]

btw, I'm looking forward to your impressions YP...

I want to buy another wii game to play during golden week, and it seems like either Klonoa or Fatal-Frame are good candidates.

That's exactly right. The jumping mechanics really help to set this one apart from other platformers, though. (I also enjoyed the story, but I was a younger player when I went through the original.) It's great that this game is getting a second chance, especially as it's on the home console most appropriate for it. Man, I can't wait for this!
