Title: GDC 2009
Post by: BeautifulShy on March 20, 2009, 06:41:07 PM
I'm kinda surprised there isn't a topic about this.G4 will be televising the event come Monday and will run through Friday. If you don't get a chance to watch it on TV then check out G4TV.com for details.
There is a certain rumor going around about some Nintendo characters showing up but I'm really not inclined to believe it.
G4 is also the only place on television where fans can see the 9th Annual Game Developers Choice Awards in a half-hour special airing Friday, April 10 at 6:30PM ET/PT.
Check out what we have in store for you on G4tv.com:
* Live-blogging * Videos * Photos * Round-up reports from the biggest GDC panels * Hands-on demos and game previews of the biggest games of the year, including X-Men Origins Wolverine, Wolfenstein, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2, Battlefield 1943, Terminator Salvation: The Video Game, Batman Arkham Asylum, The Conduit, Aion, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, Sims 3, GI Joe, Boom Blox Bash Party, InFAMOUS, Fat Princess and Huxley. * Extensive coverage on the new Nintendo DSi and DSi Ware and the latest Wii and DS titles * The latest news on XNA and Windows 7. * Game trailers and gameplay videos in high-definition. * And more!
On the TV side, X-Play's Adam Sessler will walk the show floor, report news directly from Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata’s GDC 09 keynote presentation, and speak to other special guests such as legendary Metal Gear creator, Hideo Kojima!
there is everything G4 is covering, full story @ the link above.

Is any staff going to cover this event?
There are also the two Nintendo patents that have showed up in the last few months; the Zelda hint system patent and the recently discovered Nintendo Teaching patent.
I think we might see some WiiWare and Motion Plus talk, but I doubt we'll see any major announcements.

MegaBite that is good to hear.
Pap I just saw your topic about the Nintendo Teaching Topic. I know Iwata and Kojima are going to be doing keynote addresses. I think they will show of the DSi and some DSiware titles.Show some of the uses for the DSi.Get some ideas running in Developers heads.I also think Motion+ will be shown off.Maybe Grand Slam Tennis and Red Steel 2.

Thanks BNM for the heads up. Going by the list BNM posted it looks like there will be some great games being showed for the Wii.The Conduit release date is June 9th. So this should be the second to last major showing of the game.I suspect it will be at E3. Which I think takes place near the begining of June.

I hope GDC won't be turned too much into a press event, it's supposed to be about development techniques and technologies.
Really only the keynotes and such are press events. There are hundreds of hardcore dev talks.

So what are we expecting out of GDC this year?
Nintendo DSi talk- pushing the platform and DSiWare Wii games - PunhOut WiiSPorts Resort & M+ VC - more upcoming platform support, starting with VC for DSi (GB/C. GBA, GG, NGP, WS, G.com) HDD/SDHC support - what you got is what you get.. :-( New Wii Colors - please release a Black Wii b4 summer Addition of Netflix support incoming
Sony Price Drop Price Drop Price Drop (I know they can't really afford it) GoW3, FFXIII ... do they have anything else major coming up? PSP2 - touchscreen support and built in flash drive (no more UMD) & SD card support (hehe yeah right) Netflix to PSN
Microsoft Rare has been working on something ... Halo 3.5, GoW 3,... what else is coming up soon? New model of 360 coming to market, RRoD is a thing of the past (who am I kidding?)
I'm sure the rest of you can come up with a much better list than the garbage I just typed out. So, what are all of you expecting/hoping for?

Can we not talk about G4? They ruined TechTV (which was better as ZDTV anyway), and then pretty much gave up on their video game centric programming anyway.

Morari I was just posting where people can watch it. G4 isn't really the focus of this topic.GDC is.If you don't have anything to add about GDC than don't comment.

Post by: NWR_insanolord on March 22, 2009, 10:34:38 PM
I still think there's a good chance we're going to get a Wii Sports Resort release date for some time within the next few months.
Title: Re: GDC 2009

Wii Sports Resort will probably get some coverage.I believe.
Title: Re: GDC 2009
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on March 22, 2009, 11:53:14 PM
It better since its supposed to come out b4 E3. Its supposed to launch with M+ and EA has atleast 2 games ready to go in June that are supposed to use it. So if they are gonna talk M+ they are gonna show it off using WiiSports Resort with honorable mentions of probably both TW2010 & GSTennis if not playable demos of all three.

I'll be surprised if Nintendo doesn't talk about Motion Plus. If they don't it might confirm those delay rumors IGN mentioned.
Title: Re: GDC 2009

My predictions (I swear I made predictions before on this!):
-Wii Sports Resort Release date -Some new games that take advantage of Motion Plus that we have NOT heard of -Pikmin 3 video
Title: Re: GDC 2009

These aren't so much predictions as they are my hopes:
-Info on Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics -Announcement of Mario Party 9 (with no Wii Motion Plus support) -Announcement of a Wii sequel to Mario Hoops 3-on-3 (it wasn't that great but a Wii sequel could be good) -Really just some new Mario game, though it probably won't happen -WiiWare titles being released on disc form
Title: Re: GDC 2009
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on March 23, 2009, 12:49:16 PM
Animales Del la Muerte is coming out in disc for Not sure if anybody knows what that is.

I expect these to be announced at E3 2009, not at GDC. GDC is more about announcing new technology and using certain games to show the new it off. So, MP with Wii Sports Resort is logical, as well as some DSiWare games.
And once again, I wouldn't worry if MP 9 does have some MP support because it will likely be limited to some games and the game will give you the option of playing without it, so your cheapskate self can be at ease.

I wish I could go to GDC I think it would be so much fun to listen to various talks and conferences on various aspects of game development. The "big" announcement wouldn't even be much of a concern, I'd just go to learn from people in the industry.

thought he was just going to be talking about Motion Plus and DSi, but it turns out he's going to be announcing quite a few new games -- for Wii, Wiiware, and Virtual Console (and this won't just be Nintendo titles, but also third party stuff). I've already heard about a few of them (including one that makes me all giddy...I can't wait for tomorrow now).

Not give up, just adapt them. I am excited to see what games they are going to be showcasing especially the 3rd party and VC/WiiWare stuff. Will some use the Balance Board, Wii Speak and the M+? Also, this game that makes the 1UP editor giddy has me curious. IGN also alluded to something cool we'd hear more about soon as well.

Why does everyone like remakes so much? No matter how you present it, it's still the same game you've already played (in SMB3's case, probably way too much). Oh well, I guess it is just something which I am not meant to understand.
Now, if they announced a new 2D Mario platformer for WiiWare, I... I... might have to rethink my principles and allow exceptions. Hm, but if I don't stick to my principles then I have nothing. So conflicted... :-\

New Super Mario World WiiWare New Super Mario Bros. 2 DSiWare
would that make you giddy?
Title: Re: GDC 2009
Post by: Mop it up on March 24, 2009, 07:37:26 PM
Not anything on DSiWare, no. If it were released on disc for Wii that'd be the only example where it would make me "giddy" (I don't really know what that means BTW). It it were released on WiiWare then it would result in much indecisiveness, confusion, and confliction... so I'm actually kind of hoping it doesn't happen. :-\
You know, I love the American Super Mario Brothers 2 or Super Mario USA or whatever you want to call it. A sequel to that game would just be too awesome, which is why it cannot be allowed to exist.
Title: Re: GDC 2009
Post by: NWR_pap64 on March 24, 2009, 07:47:23 PM
In all fairness, "giddy" is subjective. In my case, a new entry on a classic Nintendo franchise for the Wii would make me giddy. But if its for the DS or WiiWare I would just be pleased.

LIES according to Merriam Webster:
Quote
1 a: dizzy <giddy from the unaccustomed exercise> b: causing dizziness <a giddy height> c: whirling rapidly2 a: lightheartedly silly : frivolous b: joyfully elated : euphoric — gid·di·ly Listen to the pronunciation of giddily \ˈgi-də-lē\ adverb — gid·di·ness Listen to the pronunciation of giddiness \ˈgi-dē-nəs\ noun

Title: Re: GDC 2009

New Super Mario World WiiWare New Super Mario Bros. 2 DSiWare
would that make you giddy?
New Super Mario World would be nice but I'm willing to bet that would be for the DS or possibly be made a DSi exclusive to help move systems.
On the WiiWare front I would love to see a 2D Mario Brothers level editor game. Think of a game like Little Big Planet except with all of the old models and tilesets from past Mario games past and present available to make levels. That could actually be a great game. Make it a disk based Wii game and have additional assets unlocked over time via WiiConnect24.

- global shipments of Wii are confirmed at 50 milllion, making it the fastest selling game hardware in history.Total shipments of DS have surpassed 100 million around the world.
- lots of talk about Miyamoto’s design process…nothing new to discuss.
- Wii Sports Boxing original prototype shown…very basic geometry
Iwata says that Miyamoto "kidnaps" employees. "The victim is handed a controller and told to start enjoying himself." This is not a focus group. No need for the player to talk at all about his reactions to the game. "Of course, the development team wants to tell the player how to walk through levels, but Mr. Miyamoto will never allow this." If the kidnap victim is happy, the team has succeeded. If he's not, the team has failed.
- We find out that Nintendo’s developers had to learn dance moves in order to better tune their rhythm, which helped them to create Rhythm Tengoku/Rhythm Tengoku Gold
Iwata reminds people the game will be available in 11 days...and everyone in the audience gets a free copy! Massive applause from Nintendans and prospective eBayers alike.
47,000 of all new DS owners last year were female, according to NPD.
Iwata references Guitar Hero, Spore and World of Goo as new ways of thinking about games.
- Rock ‘N Roll Climber is about to be shown. Meter on bottom of screen shows shifting of weight on balance board. Use hands to climb across a mountain face. Climb the top of the mountain to pick up a guitar in-game and rock out.
- FFCC: My Life as a Dark Lord hitting WiiWare this year
- FFIV: The After Years due out this year
- Final Fantasy hits VC this May in Japan, and then 5 more in the series will follow. Final Fantasy 1 and IV are confirmed thus far.
- Moving Memo Pad being shown once again. Reconfirming DSiWare release in states. We will be able to upload creations to a server, much like Japan.
Onto another DSiWare title, WarioWare Snaps. After each kinetic performance, it shows back a video of you playing the game ... and, as you can imagine, you'll look ridiculous. Every time. Not what we'd call a "subway-friendly" game.
2 million DSi's sold in Japan so far. Amazon says DSi preorders are the most of any game product in its history. GameStop preorders are twice those of the DS Lite.
- Virtual Console Arcade announced - Mappy, Space Harrier, Ishtar, Space Invaders and others. These are available for download today, but it is unclear whether or not this is in Japan right now.
- A sequel to Phantom Hourglass on the DS! Trailer is being shown. There’s Link shown as the conductor of a train…with train travel being the main method of getting around. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks is the title.
That’s the end!Your thoughts?

Just as I suspected it wasn't the announcement megaton many were hoping. However, the fact that the storage problem has been solved starting TODAY is amazing.
I'm disappointed that there weren't any Wii announcements. Lots of WiiWare, though. And just as I predicted that rumor about three Nintendo franchises appearing at the show were complete bull.

Button latency and lag in general will keep this from ever taking off. If I were the ceo I'd take all the venture money and move to Mexico.
Reminds me what the Gizmondo CEO did when that thing failed horribly, except that he had a Ferrari then totaled it and got sent to jail for sending false information to investors and the company and also lying to the cops! (http://i.gizmodo.com/301003/dietrich-of-gizmondo-ferrari-crash-fame-sentenced-to-30-days) But that's what they got for positioning a game called Sticky Balls as the killer app for that platform.

It's yet another idiot promising thin clients as the solution to all hardware upgrades. Hasn't that been going on since the 80s?

Its a good idea on paper, but what happens when you have a Crisis 2 and 1 million people logging on at the same time to play? or WoW with 5 million people all trying to play at the same time?
If they can pull it off, then more power to them, but I wouldn't expect anything other than a ripple in the pond, no where near the huge splash they will hype this up to make

I call BS. We haven't solved the problem with lag in games with the server in the same city and the only reason why those games are smooth is because there are all sorts of algorithms to compensate for the times we don't have new info. All this on much lower bandwidth. If VNC hasn't shown me anything else, is that it's only good for remote troubleshooting, not real time computing. Even if we did have the bandwidth, they would never solve the distance problem along having enough servers for peak times. It's one of those works on a small scale that become a terrible monster when scaled up.
I will not feel sorry for the suckers that invested in this.

Invented? Please, the mainframe-terminal approach has been around for decades already and users have ALWAYS hated it.
