Title: I'm the biggest sucker in North America(component cables related)
Post by: SirSniffy on March 14, 2009, 12:02:25 AM
I just plunked down $20 for Wii component cables, and they make all the games look like a leper whore's ass! I swear it made Tales of Symphonia 2 look like a first gen PS1 game. Even Madworld got worse looking. Everyone always kept telling me to buy the component cables, but honestly, if the games don't support any high resolution..it's a waste! Damn the Wii for not having any kind of anti-aliasing feature!
Damn, I feel like such a chump. I could have bought comic books with this money :-\

Um what brand were they?

Wii does have anti-aliasing features it's the developers job to put it in and utilize it. There are a bunch of PS3 and 360 games that look jaggy and lack anti-aliasing. I hope you enabled 480p.

Would it make you feel any worse if I told you you could've spent less?

I got the Nintendo brand. I did set up the 480p in my settings, and I would have paid whatever for them, as long as they made things better...it wasn't so much about the money this time. I wanted the Ninetndo brand. They made things worse. It's my fault though for not reading enough reviews and things. I hate wasting money, especially now.
I hope in the future more games are made with HD resolution in mind.

It's due to lazy developers. Pop-in Star Fox Adventures if you don't believe me, it looks absolutely beautiful in 480p and 16:9. It certainly doesn't make anything look worse, it just lets you see all of the details, or lack thereof.

HD makes SD look worse, and there's little that can be done about that (without extra costs). This is the truth and reality of pixel interpolation to upscale previous generation content. HD is so advanced, it destroys standard definition in real-time (there is a dash of sarcasm here), literally. HD is so advanced, it can't be bothered to display the CLASSICS properly.
The mild anti-flicker filters in Brawl, Melee, and Black Knight do have an anti-aliasing benefit on good CRT televisions. But when displayed on a non-interlaced monitor it presents itself more like a blur relative to the Windows 3.11 VGA crispness of progressive scan. When upscaled by an HDTV, the blur is simply amplified, like cleaning your eyes with a toothbrush and chocolate pudding. Okami takes it a step further, and can go piss itself. That game is not fit for viewing.

Hold. the. ****. up. And hold it up high so we can the see the particular **** that you're holding.
You're saying you were happy with the composite cables? Then shove them back into your HDTV and toss the component cables out the window! Hook up your PlayStation again and go back to the time when games looked and played better!

Go into your LCD TV settings and turn down the sharpness to zero. It's artificial and distorts the original picture.

Great that this was brought up. I was looking for component cables and I did notice the jaggies on the TV sets. So the best solution is to work with the settings on both the TV and Wii?

I wish I could set the display to use nearest neighbor interpolation between image pixels rather than the stupid smoothness it uses that makes stuff look like blobs. And yeah, the "sharpness" setting is a load of arse, just throws a photoshop filter over your image.
I got some cheap (10€) component cables for the Wii, set the thing to 480p.... and everything looked the same as it did with composite. Neither did I see any difference on the 360 between component and HDMI (other than the HDMI cable being long enough that I can put the system in a better location).

(props the '****' up on an easel for now) Yes, I was happier with composite cables! Can you believe that?! Chrono Cross looks better than half the Wii games I am putting in! GAH! Stab my SOUL!

Actually, it won't make a difference if you do that, because the Wii does not support higher resolution on most games. I hate saying this, but I think it's best to put your Wii on a standard def TV :-X

I did this actually, and it didn't help in the least. Maybe my TV is just too big. I have it on a 32 inch HD-TV. My friend tells me that the bigger the TV, the worse the effect will be. Thanks for the tips though.
Well, it's official, my Wii is going back in my bedroom on my old standard def TV. It's sad, but it has to be done for the sake of my eyesight, my sanity, and my Virtual Console games.

Its sad that Nintendo had the foresight to include anti-aliasing features since the N64, yet fails to get developers to use the features. Things could be so much better if developers would take the time to do them right.

It's not Nintendo's fault that developers don't include AA, there are games that lack AA on every system. Just because Nintendo Sony and Microsoft provide tools to developers it doesn't mean every tool will always be used. That falls on developer and sometimes publisher digression because developers always have deadlines to meet so while there can be a lot of things planned to be implemented not all of them will make it in the final product.

I always thought my Wii games looked better using component cables.

It eats vast amounts of processing power. You'll have to cut down on everything else if you want a good framerate with AA.

That's true and untrue at the same time. Sure AA takes a pretty decent hit out of the GPU, but good optimized code will make up for that difference. Again, I point to Star Fox Adventures, or anything made by Factor 5.

Ooohhhhhh.... that's why I'm wondering what in the world you were talking about. Nintendo's component cables are fine with my SD 480p TV.

This brings up a question I have, maybe somebody here could answer it... I don't know much about this tech stuff though so I might get something wrong...
I have a standard CRT television which has a component input. I was reading its manual, and it said that the TV can't output in progressive scan; that's another name for 480p, isn't it? The question I have is, would component cables still make a noticeable difference in picture quality even if I still use 480i?

I'm no expert, but I think that Component purportedly delivers a cleaner image because of the way it separates the image data and deliver it to the tv, which is why it has five cords instead of three?

Progressive scan is the "p" in 480p.
Using component rather than s-video on a 480i CRT will yield a marginal improvement in pixel clarity, but might not be noticeable. What you're getting is a reduction in color bleeding and video noise. (big difference over composite video)
What 480p really enables is clarity of movement, by sending complete frames to your eyes. This takes away the flicker/blur effect caused by interlacing. The most noticeable difference is in 60fps games like Metroid Prime. In 480i, when you move the camera around the background isn't totally clear when it's moving, its sort of cloudy. In progressive, it's simply CLEAR, creating a better impression for your eyes, closer to the way we perceive real objects that are in front of us.
30fps games do not yield that kind of motion clarity, because TVs (in p.scan) will force the 30fps to fit its 60fps display, by making blended frames in between the real frames. This deficiency is most noticeable in RE4, if you aim upward at trees or columns and you swing the camera left/right, creating a ghosting effect on the tree edges. It's not so noticeable in other games because the gameplay viewpoints aren't stressing these clean left-right object movements.

Kairon, 2 of the 5 cords are for L/R stereo sound, so it's only 3.

I'm using composite. Perhaps I'll get a cheap third-party cable and see what happens. This is why I was sad to discover that the Wii doesn't use the same cable as Nintendo's previous systems, because I can't use my S-video cable. This also answers whether or not getting the component cables for the GameCube would be worth it, and it sounds like they wouldn't. Anyways, thank you for the info!

But the same optimized code could be doing something else with that power instead. Like, say, run a game that doesn't suck :P.
