Title: What happened to the birthdays?
Post by: UltimatePartyBear on March 12, 2009, 05:39:25 PM
The calendar isn't showing any birthdays outside of October, November, and December.  I've checked 2008, 2009, and 2010.  I changed my birthday from May to November, and it showed up there.  This is a weird little bug.

Yeah I noticed that when the new forums went up.

That's sad, and my birthday is in less than a month.
Do we have an answer on this yet?

But on the bright side, because you mentioned it I just discovered the calendar feature. Pretty neat. I should click the other buttons I don't normally know and see what they do.

Nope not yet stratos.

It also shows that there isn't any birthdays coming up. Before the change of forums. It showed at the bottom who's birthday was coming up.

The calendar doesn't show any birthdays until October 3rd.
I just tried changing my birthday to the 17th of March and it didn't show up on the calendar. I changed it back to December 5th and now it doesn't show up on that day either.
Oops...

Happy Birthday!

Who do we send a note off to about this? Has anyone PM'd someone on the tech team?

Let's just say that these aren't going to get fixed, since we have other, bigger fish to fry at the moment.  Furthermore, at some point in the near future the fact that these are broken will become a moot point.

Ooooh, the cryptic musings of a website director.  ;-)

And now the plot thickens...*DUN-DUN-DUN*

Say, Lindy, if there were possibly new forums in the works, could we possibly get sig banners/images back? Or is there a reason they are gone?
Title: Re: What happened to the birthdays?
Post by: BeautifulShy on June 13, 2009, 08:32:17 PM
I don't think we were able to have images in sigs ever. I think that is because it can take alot of bandwith.
Title: Re: What happened to the birthdays?

But if we are pulling them from other sites like our photobucket page then it shouldn't cause any issue with NWR servers.

Please no sig banners. That's one reason I left GameSpot. My computer is slow enough as it is.

Well I just hope it's all sorted out by December 5th.

But I don't care how cryptic you are so long as you answer me this: Was the site renamed to "NintendoWorldReport" because you didn't want to use the word "Wii" in the name?

I hope you meant to say "bring back Funhouse Banners" because thats the only banners that this forum is missing

You know someone wanted to call it NintendoWiiReport when they were tossing around potential names back in 2005/6  :P

There's lots of clever things they could have done with the name.

But with the current name they really need to open a vacation spot so they can call it Nintendo World Resort.

Thats it!!! They are planning to do one of those rename promotional campaigns and will re-christen the site Nintendo World Resort in celebration of the release of Wii Sports Resort!

Mop it up, you are a genius.

But with the current name they really need to open a vacation spot so they can call it Nintendo World Resort.

It's on the site roadmap.  First we have to buy an island, but it's hard to find one with a gigantic skull carved into the side of a mountain.

No sig banners/images.  There's too much temptation for bandwidth leeching, and we can't police all of it.

Understood. That makes sense. And thinking about it while browsing other forums, I think I would miss not having sigs because a lot of them are flashy and annoying.

Technically you still can have an image in your sig. It just can't be larger than 1x1 pixels.

I hate sig banners, they are like having a banner ad in between every post. And they would slow the load time down to a crawl. They are one reason I stopped visiting GameSpot, I can load up at least four pages here before loading up one page on GameSpot.

I like simplicity. That's one of the few things I still like about GameFAQs.

This is ideally what a website should look like:

What a paradox.

Their forums are kind of a clusterfuck. Nothing simple about them.

I don't see what is wrong with them. They don't even have author icons or custom titles or any of that fanciness. Just little bars to split posts which show the username, post time, and report link. Very clean and simple.

I see your point, and I agree.  No one likes cluttered forums full of forever-long signatures, images everywhere, where the posters have accumulated about 50 random badges a piece, among things.  That's something GFAQs does well, they keep the interface, the visuals, among things, very simple.  No pictures, no clutter, no filler.

That said, I definitely prefer NWR's method:  Allowing an avatar let's users input just the right amount of personality to breed familiarity and recognition.  Requiring that pictures be of a certain size limit, and typically asking that they remain relevant, well, there isn't a much better way to do things, I think, at least, on a forum.  You get words words words, and they keep relatively relevant.  That's what I think works best.

So that's why Lindy went to the islands for vacation. Very crafty Lindy Luthor!!

Is it harder to find an island with a giant skull carved into the side of a mountain than it is to carve a giant skull into the side of an island's mountain?

Oh, I didn't say GameFAQs has a better setup than here, just that its simplicity is one thing I like about it. I like author icons because I just have to insert that random picture of Birdo, though I sometimes wish the size limit were 150x150...

Maybe that's why we've had a boost in hiring here, Lindy needs the extra hands to carve out the giant skull for his secret evil bond villain lair.

I see you fixed the Birthdays in an interesting way. The persons user name is orange when it is their Bday.

OK get onto the Search problem and Memberlist problem. Preferably the Member list.
