Title: What was your first exposure to gaming?
Post by: The Omen on April 12, 2003, 06:36:37 AM
I am just curious to hear the circumstances in which you first decided that video games were for you.  I know my first game was Combat for the Atari 2600.  My dad bought me the Atari 2600 and I soon was addicted to games.  From that day in 1980 , forward, i have played virtuallly non stop.  I took a brief break in 1998, but I don't remember why.  Anyway I've owned the Atari 2600,Colecovision,NES,Turbografix-16,Gameboy,SNES,N64,PS2, and the Gamecube.  My favorite is the SNES.  It had some of the greatest games ever.

My first experience was the NES.  I've had every major nintendo console ever since, except for the original gameboy and virtual boy.  I agree that the SNES was the best.  I truly enjoyed Zelda: A LttP, Super Mariocart, and Starfox.  Those were some of the best ever.

My first gaming experience was with a game where you had to make Kool-aid by getting the water and sugar, all while staying away from ghost's. I think it was on the Colecovision, but I'm not sure. My mom then gave me her old atari, and the game Food Fighters was the addiction of my childhood until my parents purchased an NES, and I moved on to SMB3.

I was 7 years old.  The kid next door got a NES for Christmas and I lived at his house for a long time.    I wasn't that good at video games at first, so I mostly played Duck Hunt, but when I got a NES of my own, I finally finished Super Mario Bros.

Commodore 64.  I can't say I can remember my very first game, but I remember Wizards (Wizardry? can't remember - a fun platformer with keys and treasure),  Pole Position, Frogger, Bard's Tale III, Adventure Construction Set... ah, fun.  I think I was 5 or 6.

hard for me to remember which game, but it was definitely computer games since my dad is a programmer and we've always had multiple computers in the house.  i think the first game i played was Dig Dug.  or it might have been multiple games on the old MicroBee (anyone remember that brand?) with green and black color screen.

these were the days...

My first gaming experience was either Missile Command or Asteroids on the Atari 2600. I was like, three. It was my parents. The loud noises scared the crap out of me.

Bout two years later, we got new neighbours, I became best friends with their three kids. Anyway, they had a magical huge box called a Master System Powerbase. I became badly addicted to the likes of WonderBoy, Trans Bot, Teddy Boy...
For my Birthday later that year, I got a NES. It came with Zelda, Dr. Mario, Shadowgate and a cleaning kit bundled in (How's that for value)

It had... Begun......

From there, I've owned various units, such as the SNES, Master System, Mega Drive, Game Boy, Lynx, Mega CD, N64, Saturn... Blah Blah Blah. But being a poor kid, I had to end up selling stuff to get the 'latest' machine.

I've sold so many great games over the years

.. And now, I collect games and units, trying to currently re-build my Master System collection. My room is a damn mess of cartridges, dusty units, instruction manuals, game related junk....

There, my life story.

That was a nice time filler.

Well actually my first exposure to gaming was with the Sega Mega Drive and Sonic 2. It was the only game i had for like 2 years but i didnt need any other games, i loved sonic 2 so much, then i got Sonic 1, 3 and Sonic and Knuckles. I was a sonic fanboy until i got my hands on a Gameboy The first time i got REALLY addicted to a game was only about 4 years ago with Pokemon Yellow, i played my friends gameboy all the time until finally at christmas i got my own Gameboy and Pokemon Blue. Then i saw a commercial for Pokemon Stadium on tv, and i was drooling at the mouth, i just sat there amazed for like an hour. The next day i got a N64 with Pokemon Stadium and thanks to Pokemon making me become a Nintendo fan, i have been able to enjoy the likes of Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye and Super Mario 64. If it wasn't for Pokemon i wouldnt be a gamer, and i probably would only have a PSX2 and Grand theft auto.

Theres my life story too.

Vectrex baby...I can still remember being at my grandmas and my cousin handing me a big shopping bag filled with a vectrex and games.  He was upgrading to a NES.    There were the power outages and heat waves in NYC that summer, and I remember lying there, just waiting for the power to come back so I could get a game of scrambler or bezerk in on the vectrex.  Even my mom played that thing with us...ahhh the memories.  ::sheds a tear:::  Still have the old thing, with about 6 or 7 games.  Works perfectly!

I also remember Thanksgiving 1989 where the same cousin strutted in with a game boy and mario land.  I bugged my mom the whole night that I needed one for christmas.  When christmas arrived, I opened every present.  A gameboy, but no Mario Land.  I was crushed.  Turns out "santa" forgot about some of the toys.  My mom ran outside and threw them on the front porch, then said "look, santa must have dropped them on the way in!"  Awww yeah, Mario Land was the sweetest game ever back then.  Now you're playing with portable power!

My first gaming / computer system was the Commodore 16+...Great little machine. =)

My first console was the MegaDrive 2. I had a friend with a NES living down the road for a long time before that, though. Mario 3 was like, the best game ever for me at that time.

The first game I played was Space Invaders on an old Amstrad that my parents bought for me at the age of 5. After that I played some kids text adventure type games on that and then, at the age of about 7/8, something like that, I had a NES. I was pretty much hooked then, particularly by Mario. Then I had an Amiga and the real addiction set in, with games like SuperFrog. Since then I have never been without a game of some description - usually several in fact. For the past 5 years or so I have mainly been a PC gamer, and my favourite games of all time have been on the PC - Dungeon Keeper, Bard's Tale, Alpha Centauri, Quake, Fallout, The Longest Journey. Dungeon Keeper was a game I played after a short period of non gaming - it bought me back to full on gaming and kept me there, so I guess I have that game to thank/blame for me being where I am today - still addicted to gaming and addicted to posting on forums about it.

My first exposure to games was when I was very young. My dad bought a regular Nintendo and Donkey Kong for it.  I was really young I think about 4 or 5 and didn't know how to read the instruction manuals, but I kept on trying to play over and over till i got it.  I think I made it past the first level of Donkey Kong after a LONG TIME, I'm talking like a week or two.  I was so happy when i finally got it.  Then when my dad got me Super Mario Brothers I was obsessed with NES.  The only thing I would do was wake up, then play, sleep.  I guess that's how i got to the way I am today.  When I'm really into a game I don't do anything else but play it till i beat it.  My only problems with games nowadays is that their too easy for me.  I need a challenge, something that will get me stuck for a while, not some stupid button mashing part cough*STARFOXADVENTURES*cough I need something that requires major skill.  Well anyways sorry for the rant but me talking about gaming brought me back to memories and such.

One more thing, sadly enough I never got to experience the Atari or Intellivision.

games are probably easy for you cause you play them so much i mean you do anything for a long time and you develope a knack for it it becomes second nature (or in extreme cases first )

I guess my connection previously was bad, and my post was not sent, so here we go again:

You have not really beaten Super Mario World until you beaten it to the point where you have 96* (96 with a Star) at the Startup screen, which means that you beaten every stage in the game all ways that are possible.

not wise.. nerds

im only 18.. but ive grown up around gaming i cant remmeber a point in my life where there wasn't some form of electronic gaming available, mum and dad had an atari but before i could think it was sold, then we had the amiga 500, which i grew up on playing top down shootemups namely swiv the hybris and blood money (and others i forget the names of) from there we had a mighty 486 that i managed to completly screw up dont quite know how i did it, but it sort of imploded on its self in a software sence, but it rose from the ashes i caused, i got a snes soon after that (conincidence?) which was fine and dandy, shortly after that dad got a p1 233 and i got a 64 then dad got a 700 a bit later. i think i got a gbc around that time, cant quite remmeber. then came my gba shortly after it was released, then came my gamecube (as a christmas present... in october (again to get me off the pc )) and then an SP on release day.. a week after that i got a snes again

and so ends the saga of my buying stuff more to come rest assured

Yeah, I am not Old either... infact, I just turned 23 this past 16th of April.

However I know of other people in other Forums who are 43 and older that play games as well. Games are not really restricted to any paticular Age, but meh.

My memory of most of those systems is hazy, but I remember one game for the Coleco Vision, which was called "Dukes of Hazard" (The show) and it came with a Foot paddle, Steering wheel, and you used the Joystick that slided into a psection of the steering wheel as the stick shift and you drove around town and eventually Boss Hog would start chasng you and you had to lose him by jumping your car over a bridge under construction....... and me being 7 or so and not even understanding the sciences behind driving, I never made it and always landed in the water and such.

The Coleco Vision was actually made before the Nintendo and the Sega Master System and yet, had some decent graphics for it's time.
