I've been asking myself the same question for almost a year.

Think we can start a petition and boycott Nintendo until they announce a US release for Professor Layton 2?

I think you'll be lucky to last a week if you try to boycott Nintendo.

Best news to come out of GDC. (http://gonintendo.com/?p=76827)

Level 5 has confirmed that they are going to localize the entire Professor Layton series. They are working on localizing the second game right now!
EDIT: Confirmation from the great Chris Kohler. (http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/03/layton-watch-cl.html)

Storage solution, arcade games for the virtual console, an awesome playable demo of Punch-Out, more WiiWare support and ALL LAYTON GAMES LOCALIZED?
...Are we sure this is Nintendo we are talking about? They are being...too nice.

I just finished playing the first Professor Layton 4 days and completing all challenges. I get why people are so excited. I loved this game. One of the few games where I actually kept playing the game steady and wanted to finish it all. So many games I start and stop and start and stop. This game I made the time to keep going through it. Awesome game. Can't wait for the next one.

Funny enough, I got stuck in one puzzle and stopped playing it for a few months. But when I went back into it I couldn't stop. The game's charm finally clicked in and everything just made sense.
Without spoiling much the story was very well presented with the puzzles, and it even had me shocked at how inventive and clever it was. I can't wait to see how this is further developed in 2, 3 and 4.

The lack of love I see for proffesor layton in the thread is disturbing.
What do you want me to say? I'm waiting patiently for the next game ot come out so I can devour it and if the Professor Layton movie gets released here, I am going opening day to check it out. There's love. There's just not much to say.

You can officially count me in for spreading the Layton love. I loved the first game, which led to many random outbursts of "Leeeuuke, my boy, this reminds me of a PUZzle!"

Well, I know that. Still, I thought people would be more excited.
However, I agree all we can do for now is wait.

Isn't Layton pretty heavily changed for localization when it comes to the puzzles used?
Title: Re: Professor Layton Love Thread
Post by: vudu on August 14, 2009, 06:45:10 PM
Some puzzles are (mostly the ones that involve puns, double meanings, etc.) because they don't translate very well.
As I understand it, a lot of puzzles that were from the Japanese Layton 2 were put in the first American version, which is partly the reason why it took so long for a sequel to arrive over here.

I completely forgot that this was coming out so soon! The first game was absolutely delightful, and there is no doubt within my mind that the second will be any different. Though I do wonder how they will play off the puzzle theme again considering the entire awkwardness of villagers randomly pulling Layton aside to do puzzles was due to them being dolls. Curiosity and anticipation settling in!

Seriously, can't wait though. This is the only game that could keep me from playing the Metroid Prime Trilogy. :)

Well, if you couldn't tell I wasn't being serious, the fact that I quoted your post and did not add spoiler tags would be a tip-off. Plus, I was actually doing it for the benefit of those who have not played the game. Although, it isn't that hard to figure out as you play the game. It starts to become pretty obvious.
Although, on a side-note, I do often end up playing games long after they are released since I want to buy them at a cheaper rate. However, this often means many things will get spoiled by the time I do play the game. This is one of those rare times where I am actually on top of things. I guess that's the trade-off for waiting but I wonder, should there be an expiry date for spoilers?
Title: Re: Professor Layton 2: Diabolical Box - AVAILABLE MONDAY!
Post by: Elixir on August 22, 2009, 04:20:36 AM
Well a joke quote gets a joke response, no? =)
And how about if you have not played the original of a sequel (there is a bit of gray in this area, I must admit, like the Zelda series), or should I say "direct sequel" like Layton pretty much is, then you do not enter a thread about said sequel? It does not make much sense to do so, really, and it can be frustrating to think about what needs to and what not needs to be spoiler-tagged in such a situation.
Now obviously when this game comes out I will be spoiler-tagging spoilers accordingly, as everyone else.

Amazon finally delivered this to my mail box yesterday evening. I got to play a few hours, and I love it so far. I couldn't put it down. The story and setting both have a more compelling hook this time, IMHO, and I love the fact that some of the puzzles seem to be more directly connected to the mystery or setting at hand.
Loved the last game; I'm sure that I love this one even more. I only hope that Nintendo doesn't wait so long to localize the third game.

I have played Curious Village and Diabolical Box. Maxi here is brief overview with out spoiling the stories for either game. Basically Professor Layton is a world famous professor who is well known for being a great puzzle solver. He has an apprentice name Luke. Due to his great puzzle solving skills, he has a tendency to get asked to solve mysteries and such. You get a lot of variety of puzzles to solve. Some are presented by locals, some are hidden. As you solve certain puzzles, the story progresses through cinema scenes and conversations. There is usually a twist or two to keep things intereresting. If you like puzzle solving, the game has a wide variety of puzzles, from sliding block puzzles, observational ones, following paths.
The music is very fitting and the stories have been interesting to see to the very end. I can not wait for the new game to come out.

I have to say that I was impressed when I played the demo of the first game at Walmart and it had full voice acting since it is a DS game.

What confuses people is the gameplay. You don't really solve or detect anything related to the story, instead people give you odd puzzles thoughout the story. For example, you might bump into a character A who's a baker--he'll give you a puzzle (brain teaser) and you'll have to solve it to get him to talk. You really don't "solve" anything--or at least in the the first two games you don't.
Basically it's for nutters that enjoy brain teasers like me.
Title: Re: Return of the Professor Layton Love Thread!
Post by: UncleBob on August 17, 2010, 12:50:48 AM
The games are, basically, a great collection of brain teasers and puzzles.
Separate from that, you've got a fun story, told through a combination of amazing animation, great still drawings and some mighty fine voice over work.
If any one of these were taken by themselves, it'd be an /okay/ product. But everything together is awesome.
Actually, I take that back - the movie is missing the brain teasers and I'm sure it's going to be awesome.

I love the Professor Layton series, too. I love the art work, the animation, the characters, and pretty much everything else about it. It also makes me all the more excited for a possible, eventual release of Ni no Kuni. :D
I'd love to see a console version of Professor Layton, or to at least see the first game released on Wii Ware a la Phoenix Wright.

grumble-grumble.
So, we got the game in last Wednesday. I was off, but noticed it was in on Thursday. The previous titles did not have a hard street date, so I was surprised to see that this game came in a box with a big, green label saying "DO NOT SELL BEFORE 09/12/2010". I scanned the game at a register to see if the sale was blocked, as most products (movies, books, games, etc.) with a street date are... It wasn't! Well, I went to our internal computer system and looked it up to see if it showed a Street Date or a Ship Date... Sadly, it showed a Street Date of 09/12/2010.
Not wanting to lose my job, I stuck the game back in the box and locked it back in the back room with the other street-dated product - however, I moved it a bit to the side as everything else is dated for Tuesday and this was dated for Sunday.
I go out there tonight to pick me up a copy (getting with management so they'd know where to get it without trying to dig through all the other boxes of street-dated product. They even make a note of the 09/12 date (because Nintendo is about the only ones to do Sunday releases).
I go up to the front register to check out... "SALE NOT ALLOWED". WTF is this crap? Some kind of sick, twisted joke by Home Office, knowing this is the one thing that makes me happy?
Grrr.

Just finished The Unwound Future last night. Great story...very bittersweet; it actually made me a little sad. It's not very often that video games ellicit that sort of reaction from me.
Here's hoping that the Spectre's Flute makes it's way over here. The Japanese launch trailer makes it look incredible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfjzDEZi81I (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfjzDEZi81I)

Just finished it myself, score of 5000ish. There's a couple puzzles (I can think of five or so) that simply didn't make any sense or had multiple answers that could've worked.
Hopefully after Flute, we'll see Prefessor Layton 3DS. :)
