Title: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: swimguy228 on April 11, 2003, 04:12:21 PM
I'm from Detroit, and this is the time of the year that all of us Detroiter's live for. This year, there are many teams that have a shot at winning hockey's holy grail, and there should be some great hockey in this season's playoffs. In fact, there already has. That amazing triple overtime game between Detroit and Anaheim was one to watch (expecially if you were at it like yours truly ). Also, every home team (the higher seeds) except for New Jersey lost their first game.
Though Detroit lost, I still feel that they are going to go on to win the cup again, yet they will have to go through many great teams to win. But you saw last night how a team can be totally outplayed (Anaheim) and still win a game. Giguere played absoulutley stellar, and pretty much won the game for the Ducks. He made his NHL playoffs debute with 63 saves, the most ever for a debute.
Here are the matchups by the way:
WESTERN CONFERENCE (1) Dallas vs. (8) Edmonton (2) Detroit vs. (7) Anaheim (3) Colorado vs. (6) Minnesota (4) Vancouver vs. (5) St. Louis
EASTERN CONFERENCE (1) Ottowa vs. (8) New York (Islanders) (2) New Jersey vs. (7) Boston (3) Tampa Bay vs. (6) Washington (D.C.) (4) Philadelphia vs. (5) Toronto

Red Wings will win it.
Who else?
Ok, maybe I'm biased because I was born in Detroit, but they're still an amazing team. They played harder than Anaheim last night, even though they lost.

I don't think my Flyers will win the cup, however (reverse psychology?)
But if they get through the first round, I think they will get to the finals against Dallas. Dallas would probably win. Can't wait to see Dallas - Detroit and NJ -Philly.

The first detroit game was awesome. (2-1, ANA 3ot)
dallas will prolly come out on top from the west, if not them vancouver. Detroit won't repeat, CuJo still plays like a leaf, choke city come playoff time.
From the east its NJ all the way, Ottawa loves to tank in post season.
I see the final shaping up to be Dallas vs. NJ, NJ in 6.
(this is an unbiased prediction from a devils fan )
...I almost forgot, Leafs suck.

I cant believe all the FLyers fans, great to see.
Yesterdays game was great and I expect more of the same from the broad street bullies.
I smell a cup this year, I really do.

Well, I don't know who's going to win. And to be honest, I don't care who's going to win. I just want the games to be good (3OT game was incredible). It's the same way I feel about the Super Bowl, the World Series, etc. I don't follow the sport enough to have a prediction of who will win the Cup, so I usually end up cheering for the underdogs. And the underdogs really came through in Game 1 of each of those series - 7 upsets, I couldn't believe it.
However, friends at work are big Capitals fans, so I'll be cheering the Caps on to victory over the Lightning. But in any case, I'm really looking forward to the series. Multiple games of hockey to watch nearly every night - it's Hockey Heaven.

You call it boring, I call it the best Defense in the NHL, and who won the Atlantic division? Last time philly won the cup 1975. Last time the Devils won the cup, 2000. last time philly was in the cup final 1997, last time NJ was in the cup final 2001.

yeah the devils really suck and i do think the flyers have one of the best chances in years all of their big scorers and defenders are healthy- they had a bad game one but really bounced back yeserday ottawa may be good but they tend to choke in the playoffs i reallly would like to see a rematch between the flyers and red wings i am still really pissed about that sweep in 97' so hopefully we can finally get our revenge the late season pick up of almonte and the returns of gagne and leclair really give the flyers good stability for their offense hopefully the goaltending will keep up though

So as not to start a flame war, I will let that "devils really do suck" comment alone.
I really want to see detroit play Colorado in the playoffs, I would love to see Cujo choke on Forseberg.
on a side note, the 1995 Stanley Cup final was my favorite. (NJ v DET, NJ won the series 4-0.)

Let me set you guys straight, no team from the East is going to win the cup. There are just so many good teams in the West, and the East is too weak to handle them.
Having said that, I would also like to let you guys know that the wings are not out of it yet. They may be down 2 games to none, but look what happened last year. All the bounces were going the Vancouver's way, even though they were completely outplayed. Once a fluke goal went in for the wings (Lidstrom's shot from Center Ice), the bounces started going their way, and the true talent of the wings was shown.
This is a different situation though. Giguere seems to be a more stable goalie than cloutier last year, which could cause some problems for the wings. Cloutier did not save 97 out of 100 shots in his first two games.
Don't worry, the wings will find a way.

The devils and flyers are the only teams in the east that have a chance at beating the west. Both have great goaltending, 4 lines deep..balanced scoring and great defense.

I'm a Red Wings fan, from Detroit. I'm gonna be so mad if they lose the first round against the Ducks. Its all cuz of their awesome goalie... Please Red Wings, don't lose this next game...win 4 straight in a row...! Tomorrow's game determines if the Wings will get eliminated.

the wings are going out, they may not get swept, but cujo spent too many years learning how to choke in the playoffs in toronto. and J.S. Giguere is just that much better.
only 2 teams have ever come back from 3-0 to win a serries, 1942 Leafs, and 1975 Islanders, and only once has a defending champ been swept in the playoffs, that was 1952 cup champion Leafs, they lost to the eventual 1953 champs, strangely enough, the Wings.

It's amazing that both Detroit and Colorado, the two big hockey powerhouses of the past 8 years, are already out of the playoffs, and that the final four from last year are elminated. I now can see that Anaheim is going to win the cup as long as Jean-Sebastian Giguere can hold up, yet Dallas did what the wings couldn't in the first game, and that is score on Giguere. They got traffic in front and scored three junk goals on rebounds and deflections.
Go Ducks!!!

Why sick of the devils? Do you have something against teams that win? Or do you not like the fact that they play a system that has won them 2 cups?
Title: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: Michael_82 on April 29, 2003, 08:58:37 PM
i have nothing against teams that win all the time, its healthy to have new teams do things. i'm from pittsburgh, so i'm a die hard pens fan. thus, i've always hated teams that they shared a division with. they've fallen on some rough times and i can accept that, but i'm still a huge hockey fan. and for the record, i blame the devils for ruining the game. they're the ones who instituited that god awful trap that turned the game into sheer boredom. so, yeah, i hate that system.

Post by: Tman on April 29, 2003, 10:01:37 PM
If your gonna hate someone hate Jacques Lemaire, not the team. I'll bet if he hadn't won the cup with that system in 95 he would still be the only one playing it. It will be played till it stops winning so you better get used to it.

Oh and the Devils have plenty of talent.
Title: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: swimguy228 on May 13, 2003, 10:42:15 AM
The Wild are finished. They're down 2-0 against Giguere, and they haven't even scored in the series.
Title: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: Tman on May 13, 2003, 06:26:09 PM
After the last two rounds I would NEVER count the wild out after 2 games. A team has to win 4 games to advance not 2, and it doesn't matter by how many goals, the ducks could win the next game 20-0 and the wild win the following 4 by a score 1-0, they still win the series. If you learned anything this playoff year its never count your chickens before they hatch, Colorado and Vancouver both learned that lesson.
Title: RE: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: baberg on May 13, 2003, 06:42:46 PM
My predictions (which were made last Friday, before Game 1 of each series):
Ducks in 5. Giguere is unstoppable and the Wild have outlasted their luck. They're tired, they're worn out, and they're outclassed. Devils in 6. Tough call here, but the Devils have patience and won't take too many stupid penalties. Senators just don't look like they want to win.
The Cup: Devils in 5. The Ducks will take the first or second game away from the Devils as New Jersey underestimates them. The others go to the Devils, and they celebrate in New Jersey after game 5.

a 4 game shutout series win, I know for a fact it hasn't ever happened post-expansion(1967) and i'm pretty sure that it hasn't happend since the NHL took control over the cup(1926-27 season).
I've checked my records and..... Four times in playoff history one club has shut out the other for an entire series, but those sets lasted only two games and none occurred after 1939, so no 4 game shutout series ever.
Title: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: swimguy228 on May 16, 2003, 12:43:21 PM
Giguere is approaching the record for the longest shutout streak in the playoffs. The record is held by Detroit Red Wing (yeah!) Nortie Smith, who kept the puck out of the net for around 248 minutes. Giguere has gone roughly 208 minutes. I'm am not 100% on these numbers.
I do know one thing though, Giguere has become the first goalie to have a shutout streak over 200 minutes in both the playoffs and the regular season in the same year.
I don't think that the Wild will score in this series, but i don't want a Red Wing record to go down. Thus, Giguere must not break Hasek's record of 6 shutouts in the playoffs that he set last year.
Title: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: Tman on May 16, 2003, 04:15:22 PM
the longest shutout streak in playoff history is 270:08, set by George Hainsworth of the Montreal Canadiens in 1930. There is also the 248:35 streak by Dave Kerr of the New York Rangers in 1937. Then comes Norm Smith's 248:32 streak in 1936.
.....the streak is over, the Wild score on the power play in the first, about 30 seconds ago.
Title: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: swimguy228 on May 17, 2003, 06:13:01 AM
Yeah, I saw that on ESPN. Now I feel bad for not wanting Giguere to break the record. Well, he still set the record for the least amount of goals allowed in series with a minimum of 4 games with just that 1.
Ducks are in the finals and ready to kick some Devils or Senators butt.

I just watched game 4 of NJ/OTT, and it would appear that Ottawa has some tee times they want to make cause they sure as hell aren't playing three periods of hockey. 5-2 the score in that game. NJ well on the way to winning thier 3rd cup.

first of all i have to say im pleased with the amount of leaf haters here at the start of the playoffs i thot i wouldve been happy with an underdog and new jerey(probably, hopefully not tho) in the finals, but, its just not the same without detriot/ colorado/ dallas. If ottawa doesnt make the finals, ive decided to boycott my favorite sport to watch because teams like new jersey and anaheim are killing hockey (just like don cherry said). It is no longer fun to watch. Sitting back and flicking the puck out of danger and waiting... and waiting... and waiting for one chance off the other teams mistake isnt hockey. I realize that these teams do not have the skill level as colo/ det/ dal/ ott and thats why they have to do this to win, but this is taking it too far. It's embarassing how boring the finals could be this year. Oh well, maybe next year it will be back to the excitement of the more talented and risky teams. Well i'm off to watch basketball, which never fails to excite its fans at playoff time.

First off, Hap Day invented the netrual zone trap 50 years ago. Second every team plays it to some degree. Thrid playing the trap has nothing to do with lack of talent. Fourth Don Cherry has become an ass.

Title: RE: Stanley Cup Playoffs
Post by: swimguy228 on May 24, 2003, 02:55:00 PM
Well let me tell ya, the Anaheim and NJ series will be low scoring and low shooting. "The trap" has ruined the excitement of this years playoffs. Hockey is in trouble. It is not very appealing to the general public right now. Even though Ottawa was in first place through out the season, they couldn't get their attendance up. There are very few strong markets in hockey compared to other sports. You only have Detroit, Colorado, Toranto, and a few others.
This is not a good thing for hockey right now. No one will be watching this series, except for Anaheim, NJ, and hardcore hockey fans.

Explain to me how the team that won, did not infact deserve to win? And on that same note how does a team that was swept in the first round deserve it?

Disregard that comment that dmbfan made. He doesn't know anything about hockey.
Anyways, I was being sarcastic and letting off some steam.
But I do feel that the Devils did not win with talent, but with some stupid system in which they wait for the other team to make a mistake and then they jump on it. Boring Hockey!
This is why hockey does not get the T.V ratings that it deserves. No one wants to watch a game where the puck is dumped in, taken back out, stopped in the nuetral zone, and dumped back in.

Hate to rain on your "the devils are ruining hockey" parade, but this years finals got the highest ratings since 1998. 4.6 with a 10 share, I believe.

And who was in the Cup Finals in 1998? Thats right, the Red Wings.
Ok, I don't want to start a fight. Just one more thing, the ratings may have been so high because of the cinderella team (more so than Carolina last year), and the game 7. I know that there was a game 7 in 2001, but the population has increased since then.

http://www.nhl.com/onthefly/news/145100.html =more detailed ratings info. As to the population increase since the last game 7, while i realize that the 2-3 year old demographic is quite important to industries such as Fischer-Price etc, I don't feel that the NHL needs at this time to actively seek out said demographic, and that any cross-branding promotion would be a marketing disaster.
