Title: RetroActive Game #3 Poll
Post by: Jonnyboy117 on February 14, 2009, 12:14:05 AM
* Indicates the game is available on Virtual Console.

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts was automatically included in this poll because it placed second in the previous poll.  If you liked a game in the previous poll that isn't included here, don't worry!  We'll rotate the choices each time and eventually bring back some games from previous polls, particularly ones that received several votes.

Please note the voting deadline.  It is timed so that we can report the winner when we record the next episode of RFN.

Notes on game availability/price:

Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is $8 on Virtual Console.
Eternal Darkness is $18 used at Gamestop.
Shining Force II is $8 on Virtual Console.
Wave Race 64 is $10 on Virtual Console.
Link's Crossbow Training is $30 new (with Zapper) at most retailers and $25 new (with Zapper) from Gamestop.  Amazon lists used copies from $13-15.  eBay listings include the full bundle and game alone for various prices.

Also note that you may still be able to rent Eternal Darkness and Link's Crossbow Training at Blockbuster, etc.

I love Wave Race 64 and I haven't played it in ages, I vote for that.

I'll vote for ED since I have been thinking about playing through it again anyway.
FYI I noticed a repackaged ED at Wal-Mart a couple of months back with a "Plays on Wii!" sticker on it. So Nintendo may have reissued it recently. But that was still at full price and who knows, it way have just been that some retailers got a lot of stickers to put on old GC merch to move it faster.

Though do us users get to submit nominations? I was hoping to nominate the original Banjo Kazooie on N64/XBox Live.

Lastly, am I correct in assuming that the LM RetroActive is only going to last for one week instead of two since we are already posting the poll for #3?

Oh come on, Link's Crossbow Training?

Oh come on, Link's Crossbow Training?

It does seem a bit odd to have a current gen game up there. I though it had to been GC or earlier but i guess I was wrong. Who nominated that one?

We'll talk about Luigi's Mansion over the course of two episodes, announcing the next game on the latter of those.  If the crew needs a break from the game buying/playing, we may take a week off between games.

Link's Crossbow Training was nominated by someone, and I think it's an interesting suggestion.  It's not old (that was never really the intent, despite what the RetroActive name implies), but it was quite overlooked by a lot of Nintendo fans.  It also has an interesting history as revealed by Iwata Asks, and... it's a first-person shooter set in the Zelda universe.

Do you guys on the show get to nominate games or can any user place a nomination? Where do you do this?

I'm torn between ED and Link's Crossbow Training. ED is a great game that I haven't played in years, but it'll take a good chunk o' time to play through it. As Jonny was saying, I skipped LCT (despite - or maybe because? - I love the Zelda series), and I imagine it wouldn't take as much time to play through. So uh... I vote later.

Do you guys on the show get to nominate games or can any user place a nomination? Where do you do this?

I could've sworn there was a thread several weeks / a month ago where we could post our nominations (I wasn't a member at that point, and I don't believe you were either, Stratos), but I can't seem to find it. This could be an early-morning-induced fake memory...

Very clever, RFN.  You're trying to dissuade me from voting for Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts by including Shining Force II.  Very clever, indeed.

Unfortunately (for you), it's not going to work!  Fire Emblem comes out for DS next week, so that will take care of my immediate strategy needs.  However, please don't take the lack of votes for the game as a sign that it's unwanted.  I'd love to see it included in a future RetroActive.

FYI, I picked up Link's Crossbow Training (game only) for $2 at GameStop.  If anyone wants to play the game, this is definitely the way to go.  Don't forget to print out the great box art at thecoverproject.net (http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?game_id=4270).

I'm afraid I must abstain from voting this round. The only choice that piques my interest is Eternal Darkness, and based on my failed pursuit of Luigi's Mansion here in Japan, I wouldn't be able to play along if it wins.

Where is the Wii Zapper $30? I've never seen any place charge that. Most places charge $25 (although the MSRP is $20 and some do charge that).

I voted for Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. A good game that didn't get the sales it deserved.

I dislike the trend where the GCN wins every time.

Eternal Darkness is cool, but I won't have time to play it this week.  My vote goes to Wave Race 64 and its delicious water physics.

Eternal Darkness atw!

Eternal darkness, each time you beat it you get a new ending.. something like 4 total i think.   First time through it, takes somewhere areound 10 hours, and thats with reading everything you can, then, once you figure out to lop off the heads and run, well you can make it through the game in 6 hours.

While Eternal Darkness is a good game, a game that I have sold to many people, I'd much rather we did these on older games.

I like Shining Force II, and I'd hazard a guess that most everyone here has never played it.  That seems to me to be a good catalyst for conversation in the thread.

If we have two GameCube winners in a row, I'll probably avoid that system when choosing the nominees for the next poll.  However, I won't make any apologies for opening the feature up to last-gen games, and they are obviously popular in the polls.  I suspect that may be because these games are better known, still relatively easy to find at used game stores, and are easy to play on Wii.

And since it's causing some confusion, I will create a separate, permanent thread for people to nominate games.  We have a pretty solid list of suggestions already, but new ones are always welcome.

I think purposefully avoiding something like that isn't the way to go, but rather see if you can come up with a stronger list of competitors.   And dont forget, to play the entire game at the edge of health loosing insanity..  Its the only real way I can think of that makes ED what it is.

Under any other circumstances, Eternal Darkness would have my votes; Shining Force II, however, was my favorite game for a very very long time.  Gotta go with that one.

i never did have the pleasure of the sf series, so a look into those could be fun.  Although, a REALLY REALLY obscrue title..   North vs. South on the nes

Something like North vs. South is probably too obscure for RetroActive, as most of us wouldn't be able to find a copy, not to mention the impracticality of digging out an NES to play it on.  We're trying to strike a balance between old/interesting and affordable/available.

I never did beat ED. I rented it twice from Blockbuster but never bought it. I wonder how well it has aged. I am reluctant to buy it now (partially because all of my GameCube memory cards are filled and I don't want to delete anything, so I would have to also buy another memory card).

If anyone is still deciding what to vote for, please remember that the poll ends Thursday afternoon (Pacific).

We need one more vote for Super G'N'G just to ensure it makes the cut next time!

I should have voted for Link's Crossbow Training. It's not that I don't love ED: SR, but more people can play LCT and it's a really good game.

Well, we ended in a tie for second place.  I think I'll carry over Wave Race 64, since SGnG has already been in two polls.  We'll definitely bring it back eventually, as there is obviously some interest for it.

Well, this was a wash. Great result, though. It's nice to see the dust begin to fall from the GameCube section of my game library.
