Atari has made it official with the announcement of Ready 2 Rumbe Revolution for the Wii.
The series is making its debut on the Wii, now armed with motion controls. The Nunchuck acts as one glove, and the Wii Remote acts as the other.
The game will feature 20 boxers, each based on celebrities from the worlds of sports, music and movies. Celebrities enter the ring as larger-than-life "Rumble-ized" versions of themselves. Announcer Michael Buffer is signed on to let us know that we're "ready to rumble." A new Champonship Mode lets players create their own boxer and then bring them up through the ranks, using minigames to hone thier skills.
The game is set for launch in Spring of 2009.
Edit: The developer for this game is AKI who made the famous N64 WWF No Mercy game.

Man, R2R was one of the great Dreamcast launch games back in the day. The animation and graphics were pretty damn impressive, and one of the few cartoony boxing games that nearly got the Punch-out formula right.
My one pet peeve with this new version is its apparent over-reliance of celebrities. Yeah, the first two games featured celebrities, but the fun lied in the over the top, exaggerated and HIGHLY stereotypical characters. This new version seems to opt for an all out celebrity bash rather than to strike a balance.
The new art style doesn't look that hot either.
Its too early to call it shovelware, though. I'll wait till new info arises.

You made it sound like Celebrity Death Match which makes it super unappealing.

Jeez how can third parties repeatedly bone this genre over and over?
Do they suck this bad? I mean really? All of the boxing games up to and including this one have been garbage that pale in comparison to a game packed in with each Wii. Does Nintendo have to make Punch-Out just so they can grab their little unskilled hands and lead them step-by-step in the process of conceptualizing, developing, and producing a video game?
Here is one instance where Nintendo literally sat on a respected franchise and let third parties run free, for two years. And third parties just fumbled around and said "casual" a lot and made garbage. Now Nintendo, like any other multi-celled organism, decides that the Wii deserves Punch-Out, if only so they can have at least one decent boxing game to round out the consoles huge library.

Way to judge a game that was just announced and plus it's being developed by a season developer that made wrestling and boxing games. The reason why they had to make new characters is because Midway still owns the original Ready 2 Rumble characters.

Were those characters randomly generated? I've made better myself in Soul Calibur 3.

Nintendo fans don't play games.
