Title: Xbox fan buys Gamecube....story at 11.
Post by: KatDaddy on April 09, 2003, 04:53:54 AM
Let me just start by stating that I'm a new member here, but have been reviewing posts for a while...so I'll introduce myself...
I have been a gamer since the old Atari 2600 days. Owned a Genesis, PS1, Dreamcast (great console), PS2 (sold it), and an Xbox. I bought an Xbox at midnight on release day 11/15/01, and have been very happy with it. I have about 60 titles for it, and it has been probably my favorite console to date.
However, I longed for another console, and really didn't give the Cube a chance. I picked up a PS2, and was rather disappointed in it. I sold it a few months later, and lost no sleep over it.
About 3 weeks ago, a friend of mine owed me some cash, so since he's a distributor of electronics, asked me if there was anything that I wanted that he might carry. Well, I have a great 55" HDTV, Surround, DVD, so I said, "You got a Gamecube?" I figured, what the heck, I'll give it a shot.
I would like to state that I'm very happy with the Cube. My wife isn't crazy about it (she loves Halo and Ghost Recon for the Xbox). I picked up the following titles to start my Gamecube collection:
Zelda: Wind Waker Amazing game. It's like animated artwork in motion. The story, facial expressions, controls, etc. are flawless, IMO.
Metroid Prime At first, I really didn't care for it, but about an hour into the game, I was hooked! This game is soooo addictive. The more I play, the more it "grows" on me. However, I'm presently stuck on a level....maybe I'll post a "help me please" post to get me past it...hehe.
Eternal Darkness I haven't played much of this title, but it seems to be a pretty decent game. I picked it up on recommendation from a friend.
Star Wars : Rogue Leader Great shooter that satisfies the "X-Wing" pilot that is in me. I love Star Wars, so this game is naturally going to get some "props".
Pikmin Surprisingly, this game is very addictive... I bought this game used, and didn't have the instruction manual until yesterday, so I've only muddled through the first 3 "days" of finding parts.
Super Monkey Ball Addictive and fun, but man, this game will test your patience!
Zelda : Ocarina of Time/Master Quest There's an "other console" forum at the Xbox site I frequent, and this title seems to be the "benchmark" that Zelda:WW was measured on. I always hear how great this title is, so I picked it up used for $17 at Gamestop. Not bad, eh?
Resident Evil I like the Resident Evil series (fave being RE: CV for the Dreamcast). I have only looked at the first 15 minutes or so of this game. I'm afraid to go any further for fear of having Metroid, Zelda, and Resident Evil all "games in progress". I have to pace myself...
Is this a decent starting collection? There are a few other games that I've heard about (mainly Skies of Arcadia) that I'm semi-interested in. Keep in mind that this is the first Nintendo product I have EVER owned, so I know pretty much nothing of what the Cube has to offer. The only Nintendo games I have EVER played up until 3 days ago was Starfox and some Mario game for the NES. The Gamecube will probably not be my primary console, but it definitely is becoming an enjoyable experience.
I'm looking forward to posting here, and entertain any comments!!!

You're missing Smash Bros Melee. Every 'Cuber has that game, and for a very good reason. BTW, don't waste your hard-earned money with the horrible dissapointment that was Starfox Adventures. Yes, us 'Cubers get crappy 2-nd party games too

your story sounds exactly like mine. bought a ps2 a long time ago. bought 3 games for it and then sold it on ebay almost at cost a couple of months later. no looking back. bought an xbox on launch day and pretty much been a fanboy of it ever since. i don't get into owning tons of titles ($$$) but i currently have about 8. i've owned a bunch and then sold them on ebay once completed. i was a beta tester for xbox live since the 1st round. was always interested in the cube since it got rogue leader at launch and no other console got it. then prime came out and i wanted it even more. well, circuit city has gamecubes for $130 with a free game so i picked that and prime up for $130. got prime, rogue leader, and super mario sunshine. all games in progress now, but i gotta say, i'm having more genuine FUN on this console than i think i've had on the box in a while. can't really think of any new titles i want right now - waiting on halo2. but enjoy the cube - it's a great console. oh, and do yourself a favor and pick up a wavebird wireless controller. you won't regret it.

welcome to the forum. Sounds like you got a great starting collection . Resident evil zero is great as well. And as far as platform type games go, Mario sunshine is really very good.

My god man you never owned a nintendo console before? Gamecube is great but not there best. You need to get an old nes and especially super nintendo. Super Nintendo was the greatest console ever in my opinion.

I have had probably 80% of all games released for the Xbox. What would help would be to know what genre games are your favorites.
Ok...here's the definitive list of "must have" games (that are currently out).
Halo (no explanation needed. Best...FPS...Ever.)
Xbox Live kit (comes with MotoGP demo/Whacked! demo)
Apex (fabulous racing game. Grapics/story mode are wonderful as well)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer ($29 new. One of the best "Hack & Slash" game I've ever played)
Dead or Alive 3/Tao Feng (DOA3 is just a great fighter, but can be beaten by a 'button masher'. Tao Feng takes real skill/learning combos. Button mashers will get obliterated in this game by an experienced player. Can be frustrating at first. )
Deathrow (sort of extreme sports meets Lacrosse, except your using a disc, shooting toward a ringed goal. Shoot goals, beat the crap out of the other team, or a combination of both. Sleeper hit. Discontinued, so finding a copy might be difficult. )
Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (GREAT RPG. Huge environments. Play as several different character classes/races. Over 200 different weapons. Over 200 different interchangeable armor pieces. Tons of spells. Custom spells. Good graphics. Gets semi-repetitive and is very time consuming. I'm still not done, and have over 80 hours into the game. One primary quest, but TONS of side quests. Has been claimed to have "bugs", but have never encountered a problem.)
Enclave (3rd person RPG/Action...$19 new, great graphics and gameplay. Can be frustrating due to the lack of "save points".)
Mechassault (decent single-player campaign. Buy it for Xbox live capability. Lots of online fun)
MotoGP (great motorcycle racing...but sequel gets released within 60 days. Tons of Xbox live fun).
Phantom Crash (great mech game...lots of mech customization...leans toward the Japanese Anime fan. Best....intro...ever. Think of it like Mechwarrior meets Unreal Championship. In cockpit and 3rd person views. Very underrated game. Cult following.)
Shenmue II (Awesome action/RPG. $19.99 new. Comes with a DVD movie of events from the first Shenmue series, to kind of "catch you up" for episode II)
Splinter Cell (apparently you know about this game...no explanation needed.)
Steel Battalion (if you can afford it/find one, get it. $199.99 new. Huge 40 button dual-stick controller. Fully illuminated. Pedals included. Control a huge mech, and fight tons of battles with allies. Several different customizable mechs to choose from. Awesome replays which are savable to the Xbox hard drive. Takes 2-3 hours just to get used to the controls. Control everything from manevering, to chaffs, communication with supply convoys for refueling/ammo, even wash your windows. )
Anyway, that's the definitive list. If I had to choose my top 5:
Halo Elder Scrolls III:Morrowind Buffy the Vampire Slayer Phantom Crash Deathrow
It's a hard choice. Lots of good games for the Xbox. Unfortunately, there's some definitive "bombs" as well. Feel free to ask me about specific titles, and I'll be happy to give you a mini-review....

Well, I played some SNES....my grandfather had one so when the grandkids came over, they had some games to play.
I played Starfox and some Mario game on that console, and I forgot about this one. It was a baseball game, but it had different named kids playing like in a park or something. That's all the experience I have with that console....that was in my Sega Genesis days, and I was very happy with it.

"I have about 60 titles for it"
60 games for one console? That's nuts. I probably would have difficulty thinking of 60 games for all three consoles that I would like, let alone for one. Hell I don't think I even have 60 games total for all of my consoles.
Anyway your Cube collection so far is pretty good. Skies of Arcadia Legends is an amazing RPG and I normally don't like RPGs so that's saying something. You should probably get it though I might wait a bit so you can finish some of your current Gamecube titles. Super Mario Sunshine is another must-have game unless you hate 3D platformers. I suggest you get a Gameboy Player when it comes out to so you can play ports of some of the SNES classics you missed. You cannot pass up Yoshi's Island and The Legned of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
Here's an interesting question: if/when you buy Soul Calibur II which version will you buy? Xbox or Gamecube?

I cant stand this game, all the way from its look to its play. Oh well.
IMO ED and RE are the only must haves on the cube.

Your collection is pretty excellent. Smash brothers is pretty darn fun, oh, and later you might be best of picking up the GCN version of Soul Calibur 2 because of adult Link.
BTW I assume you have most musthaves that go multisystems so were just talking exclusives here right? BTW, how much do you play if you have over 60 Xbox games?

Not sure. Haven't really researched this game too much. I have SC1 for the Dreamcast, and it's probably my favorite fighter of all time. I'm not sure if you've played SC or not, but it is great. Very fluid movements, unlockables, etc. Great game.
BTW...do you know of the differences between the Xbox and GC versions?

Think of it as more of a "collection". I'm at a point in my life where I have a decent amount of disposable income. As a younger kid/teen, I had NO FUNDS to buy games, etc. So, since I love games so much, I guess I'm sort of living out my childhood. Plus, I'd rather play a great RPG/sports game than watch TV for entertainment.

Well , SC2, the GCN advantage is pretty much that Link is a playable character, but hes supposebly awesome, and hell its Link. The Xbox advantage is that its supports D4 Progressive Scan (1280x720 Resolution I think).

Both versions of SCII are virtually identical except that the Cube version has Link from Zelda in it and the Xbox version has Spawn. Graphically the Xbox version is a little better, so I hear. Unless you really care about the exclusive characters I would base the decision on which controller you would feel more comfortable using.

well i would recomend he get the Xbawx version of SC, given hes not had much exposure to Link so i guess wouldn't be that impressed by his addition, but that being said he does have MQ/WW, so i guess link could be quite the favorite charactor.
also given his rather large budget *hateing glares* he could get both if he wanted hehe

Yeah, exclusives. I am planning to probably buy multiplatform titles based on if the Xbox/GC version offers something the other doesn't. A lot of Xbox titles support custom soundtracks where you can play ripped songs off your hard drive instead of the standard fare of game music. Listening to Disturbed, System of a Down, Godsmack, 50 Cent, etc. while playing a driving game is much better than the standard "techno" fare. That is a bonus that I really like. If they're in essence the same, I'd probably buy the Xbox version. Also, Xbox can support up to 1080i resolution. Of course, the game has to as well. I am presently running gold component cables to a 55" Phillips HDTV, and it also supports Dolby Digital DTS and 5.1. I have a killer surround sound system, so the Xbox version will probably win out.
By the way, the answer to your 2nd question is this: I play games practically every day. It's not the only thing I do, but I get quite a bit of time to get some gametime in, especially after the kids go to bed. Also, my wife is turning into quite the gamer. We play alot of co-op games together, and have beaten Halo on Legendary, Conflict Desert Storm, Baulders Gate: Dark Alliance, Gauntlet, Ghost Recon, and several other co-op games together. She is also quite good at FPS's when she's playing solo. Also, she likes to race MotoGP on Xbox Live. Therefore, I do not get too much flak for gaming.
She was not real "hip" on getting a 3rd console (my kids have their own Xbox upstairs), but now that I'm in the middle of Zelda, she doesn't mind it too much. She actually seems to like to watch me play Zelda:WW, and is starting her own Eternal Darkness game.

Anyways the Xbox has a nice selection of games. It's kinna a shame thought that the only way for them to sell is by them hyping them up to no end...Fable...the new star wars game...honestly.
Anyways congradulations on your new GC purchase good news for nintendo only 46 million more GC's to go by 2004.

Wow. I thought I had a lot of games(25 gamecube, 7 xbox).
It's great to see someone whos really really into 1 console try out another (especially one that has been labeled as "kiddy" by society), and really enjoy it. Contrats, enjoy your cube.
Anyways my absolute must have list are(9.5-10): Mario Sunshine Zelda (Master Quest and Wind Waker) Metroid Prime Eternal Darkness(this seems to be a love it or hate it game, but personaly i think it's one of the best and most origional games ever)
and my Gotta have list(9-9.49): Super Monkey Ball Super Smash Brothers Melee Waverace Resident Evil Remake
and my great game list(8-9): Super Monkey Ball 2 Resident Evil Pikmin Animal Crossing Sonic adventure 2 Luigis mansion
and my dont get list(0-7): Starfox Adventures(probably the best one on the dont get list by far though) Nightfire Agent under fire
Also look forward to: Mario 128 F-Zero Starfox armada Metroid Prime 2 Pikmin 2
I'm missing alot of stuff, but you get the picture.
Anything on my must have or gotta have list you should definatly consider having in your collection, then everything that you can afford in the great game list should go into ur collection also, but they arn't priority.
Enjoy both your consoles. I definatly enjoy my both my consoles.
BTW Anyone else notice that most of these are first party games?

Well, for most classic console collectors, 60 is a pretty small number for games. I myself have 160 NES games, which is considered small to more hardcore NES collectors. Then again, older games are by default cheaper, so unless somebody doesn't consider an old Atari 2600 or Colecovision game an "actual game" and more a "mini-game," then owning a lot of games for one console isn't much a deal. For X-Box games, though, at this current time, yes, it is an insane amount. I think it all depends on the kind of "deals" you can get with certain games. Most of my games are used and were "haggled" to death.
I usually wait until an entire generation of console gaming has passed before I jump all over a system, usually just investing a little in one specific console for that generation, mostly Nintendo consoles. I waited until the 16-bit era died before I jumped all over the Genesis, and the whole 32/64-bit thing before I got a PSX and a Sega Saturn. I'd like to get an X-Box soon (preferably used and cheap), but for now, I'm satisfied enough with my PS2 and GCN. I hate to get shut out of any game, however.
KatDaddy, you already have most of the games I'd have recommended to you, but for those you don't, I recommend Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee and Super Smash Bros. Melee, just because they're pretty good multiplayer games, with an emphasis on "good" for Godzilla and more an "awesome" for SSB:M. Oh, and welcome aboard this place, even though I myself am pretty new to posting in these forums.

ANIMAL CROSSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! how could this not be mentioned, you have a wife, you might not want to get it, girls become dangerously addicted and you would never get a chance to play again.
Next is a very strange game, but very fun and interesting. It is called Cubivore. It is so weird.. but alot of fun and weird...... Yea i gotta agree with all other recomendations. Especially SSBM. that game is just fun fun fun.
ED, if you are intellectual, you will love it, but gotta get past Karim's stuff to really have fun, that is chapter.... 3.
Skies of Arcadia Legends. as a fellow DC owner, i am sure you have heard of it if not played it. But i waited till the cube version to buy it and it is great.
If your wife plays with you might wanna get beach spikers, me and my Girlfriend play it alot.
Definetly get a GBA SP if you can, if not get GBP. GBA has so many good games, and even tons of new sonic games... well 2. But they are new so they are fun.
I also bought a PS2, but i returned it in 2 days. Wish i could play xenosaga, but i will live i guess. Also have an XBOX, favorite game on there is Unreal and Oddworld.

KatDaddy,
Ok first how is it hooked up, Given you do have the hardware to support it make sure you are running it in Progressive scan from what I hear Metroid is awesome. Also do you have Prologic II available for sound? I spent quite a bit on a receiver just a few years ago and i dont have Prologic II, I just missed it coming out and wasnt aware of it.
First after you hook it up using your hardware to its full potential there are some good games.
I also have a couple thousand into my system and love playing games loudly. My wife is becoming quite the avid gamer herself. We have slowly convinced both our parents to get into gaming and they have bought gamecubes and updated PC's! I enjoy gaming more than television why watch a movie when you can participate in one? We live in the country so cable isnt available i dont have our dish hooked up becuase we get basic TV and spend the saved money on gaming.
Anyway I personally dont like Animal Crossing, it is a real life game like the Sims but different. My wife on the other hand is addicted. I am not sure how your wife will do with it. I am 23 and my wife is 24. She also enjoys watching Wind Waker and asks me to play it several times a week. So depending on your tastes you might enjoy it. I made comments about my wife not getting addicted to Animal Crossing but I tell you what its no joke!
Anyway give Eternal Darkness some time it is a very good game.
Welcome. You have a good starting collection. As far as being stuck check out Gamefaqs.com they can help. I personally try not to use the site and will resort to it if I am stuck for more than a week or s.
Josh
*EDIT* Also depending on your tastes i am looking forward to ikaruga. its a top down exclusive shooter. It has tons of replay value and there is an online ranking in the nation provided you get good enough..

I had a genisis too I really liked it was a great system. But Super nintendo to me stuck out more to me cause it had better first party software and some of the greatest rpgs ever. Sega Dreamcast was their best system ever I was so mad when it died it didn't deserve to die like saturn. I haven't got an xbox yet I just not really sold on it yet. Nothing seems to jump out me I guess I mean most its types of games aren't nessacrly my favorite genre wheter there good or not. Halo I here is great but not sure if it's worth an xbox. Steel Battalion sounds awesome but its a bit steep. I'll probably wait until Rare makes some games and Fable comes out before I decide. And thats only if they all turn out to be good.

Oh yeah, YOU HAVE TO GET ANIMAL CROSSING!!! Well, only if you liek those sorta games. I don't own it but I'm really wanting to play it. I'm gonna wait for Animal Crossing 2 because I have other stuff to buy, but it's such an awesome game. I rented it and never got bored. There isn't much to do but it's so incredibly addictive. It's chilidish and that's strangely one of the things that makes you keep coming back. It makes you feel comfortable. And getting new stuff for your house and such is so much fun for some reason. I really want Animal Crossing but I'll have to wait until 2
Eternal Darkness is probably my favorite one player game I own for GameCube and Super Smash Bros. is probably the best multi-player game I've ever played followed by Mario Party. Super Smash Bros. Melee is my favorite fighter (I'm not a big fan of fighters, though) because it is FAST. You can roll past people and double jump and get smash moves...... aaahhh. In fact, last night my brothers, my brothers's friend and I were playing it and we played for more than 3 hours. Eternal Darkness is fun because it's a serious game that I actually like. It has a Nintendo feel and that's why I like it so much. It has insane replay value.

Well, I'm officially hooked on Metroid Prime. I'm just about totally done with the Chozo ruins. There's only 2 main rooms that I haven't accessed. The really hot one, which you take damage just walking into (I'm guessing there's a special suit somewhere in another level), and a large circular room that says "is the source of the toxicity" or something like that...I'm guessing another boss fight.
I'm having trouble with the room that has the tree in the center with all of the different platforms. You have to find the 4 runes and scan them. I can only find 3.
This game is truly addictive. I really didn't care for it at first, but MP has really got me hooked for a while. It's pulled me away from Zelda WW and my Xbox.

Super Smash Bros. Melee is a very very good game. However, seeing that you haven't owned a (or at least said you have) Game Boy, NES, SNES or N64, SSBM won't fit as perfect as it does to Nintendo gamers. This game is a very VERY good nostalgia game, no doubt about it. I got it almost exactly a year ago (April 12, 2002) and even though it wore down after awhile, for some strange reason, I picked it up and it's almost like it's been completely revived, I go to tournaments, I practice everyday, I visit GAMEFAQS SSBM forums daily. This game is just so great. Other games...
-Sonic Mega Collection (Pretty nice collection of Sonic the Hedgehog games, you seem to have a lot of money to blow, don't miss this one out) -Phantasy Star Online (GCN's best and only online game, great replay value) -Super Mario Sunshine (Short but sweet, if you haven't played Mario 64, you're really in for a treat) -Star Fox Adventures (I don't want to bash this game, it's not that bad. Good/Great music, awesome visuals) -TIME SPLITTERS 2!!!!!!!! (From the makers of Goldeneye, need I say more. You problably have this game for XBOX) -Skies of Arcadia Legends (Good RPG)
I always good forget games when I have to list them, DAMN IT!

VideogamerJ:
Timesplitters 2 just didn't "click" with me. Didn't like it.
I will probably get PSO for the Xbox. The 1st 2 months are free, and I already have an XBL membership.
I am seriously pondering "Skies of Arcadia". A lot of people seem to like it.

Well I honestly I think you should get pso for cube. I heard that you can only play in america cause they use xbox live servers also you can only use the headset cause for now I don't think they will have a keyboard yet. Try talking to someone on a headset with 20 other people at once. Thats got to be annoying and the fact there is apparently there is a ten second delay. I know your probably saying well there's no keyboard for cube either except for japan but don't worry datel the makers of the action replay just made a kb for cube just like the one they made for ps2. I'm kinda peeved about it since I spent 90 bucks for mine I got from japan The cube version is free the first few months also and you can buy a broadband modem for cube I've seen quite a bit of them lately at walmart and target. If I had an xbox I would probably get the xbox verison in most cases but I think you should seriously consider the cube verison. You got more servers you can go to like eu and jp which you can't on xbox and you can still use broadband and buy the datel keyboard for 20 bucks. Besides as a cube owner you need to show nintendo you want to play online games
